Thursday, Jan 11, 2018 South West Michigan – One Brief Warm Up Before Bottom Falls Out

Thursday, Jan 11, 2018 South West Michigan – One Brief Warm Up Before Bottom Falls Out

Picture I caught looks like a visual of my prayers to God with a fervent wish our current brief winter thaw could last longer. You and I both know He’s got way too much on his plate to pay all that much attention to such a request – but I would fail my job as a silly human if I didn’t issue it, anyway.

Currently 52 with a S wind of 14 mph not making any difference so it feels like 52 degrees. Dew Point 50, Barometer 29.8, Humidity 97%, Visibility 6 mi, Sunrise 8:12 am, Sunset 5:28 pm. 100% chance of rain today to a possible inch of accumulation. High upper 50s. S winds 15 -20 mph.

90% chance of overnight rain possibly mixed with freezing rain, sleet and snow showers. Snow & sleet accumulating 1″ or less. Low in the lower 20s. W winds 15 -20 with gusts to 30.

We could perhaps set a new record today if we do get up to 56 and it looks as if we might. And then it’s goodbye to our brief warm up as the misery of real winter sets back in tonight with resulting dangerous driving tomorrow.

Had about .13″ of overnight rain and woke to more fog. I got up in the middle of the night to look outside and found fog so thick I couldn’t see the headlights or taillights of the traffic that travels the busy road on which I live. VERY foggy. This morning it’s still foggy but not nearly as thick as it was. I don’t sleep all that well and instead of being bummed about that, I’ve learned to entertain myself by making some Sleep Tea, sitting in the glider rocker by my upstairs bedroom window and watching the night world go by. Snow, rain, fog…no end to the wonders of nature to see. Last night it was the fog. And as usual, I suddenly find an hour has gone by, the tea is long gone and usually I can head back to bed and drift off to sleep. Mother Nature. Nice, not nice, but always presenting a show.

Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018 South West Michigan – Fog And Drizzle

Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018 South West Michigan – Fog And Drizzle

Currently 36 with a SSE wind of 3.5 mph dropping that to feeling like 32. Dew Point 36, Barometer 29.98, Humidity 100%, Visibility 1.4 mi, Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:26 pm. 60% chance of drizzle today, areas of heavy fog. High lower 40s. S winds 10 – 15 mph.

70% chance of overnight rain, areas of heavy fog possible. Low in the lower 40s. S winds 10 – 20 mph.

A nice break in our wintry weather. Foggy and warmer. I’m planning on bringing my dirty car on out of my tiny garage and parking it right out in front of my apartment door so it can get rained on and washed off. Wonderful!

My only concern is that Friday the bottom appears to be dropping out from under our more-or-less comfy temperatures and that will likely result in slick, dangerous roads. We really can’t win in the winter. We get the worst and then even when we get a small uptick in all of it, that usually ends up in situations that aren’t good. Our only hope and help is Spring. May it come early this year.

Tuesday, Jan 9, 2018 South West Michigan – Welcome Morning Sunshine

Tuesday, Jan 9, 2018 South West Michigan – Welcome Morning Sunshine

Currently 35 with a calm ESE wind making no difference so it feels like 35 degrees. Becoming mostly cloudy. Areas of fog possible. High lower 30s with light winds.

Mostly cloudy with a 30% chance of light freezing rain, snow, sleet. Low upper 20s. SE winds 5 – 15 mph.

What is it about sunshine that raises the spirits so much? Just a little bit of it and…well, there it is out there right now, shining away,  and it’s making me feel so good I’m not really going to pay much attention to that nasty overnight forecast we have. Sunshine is our friend, no question about it. It’s such a shame that during the winter months it’s not real good about keeping us company. Not a proper friend at all, I guess. But like any good friend, you take them warts and all, right?

In the meantime, yesterday the temperature got all the way up to 36 which was the first time since Dec. 23 that we’ve been above freezing. And boy, did it ever feel good!

Monday, Jan. 8, 2018 South West Michigan – Wintry Mix Fouling Things Up

Monday, Jan. 8, 2018 South West Michigan – Wintry Mix Fouling Things Up

Currently 32 with a WSW wind of 6.8 mph dropping that to feeling like 24. Dew Point 32, Barometer 29.94, Humidity 100%, Visibility 5 mi, Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:24 pm. Mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of light freezing drizzle & snow through early evening. High lower 30s. W winds 10 – 20 mph with gusts to 30.

Partly cloudy with a low around 20. W winds 5 – 15 mph.

So…we finally break free from the frigid temperatures and that leads us, as it always does, right on into the freezing drizzle, wintry mix nonsense. Personally, as much as I hate the snow and cold, I’ll take that any day over the icy stuff this brings us.

Went out to shovel away the path to where I feed the birds and critters and that is one powerful heavy, wet snow on the ground. I shoveled as little as I needed to do. Now, getting up the courage to drive on out and get my Monday stuff done. I don’t want to do that, but I think I must. Lord….I surely do hate this season.

Sunday, Jan 7 2018 South West Michigan – Clouds With More Snow Coming

Sunday, Jan 7 2018 South West Michigan – Clouds With More Snow Coming

Currently 15 with a S wind of 6.4 mph dragging that down to feeling like 5 degrees. Dew Point 7, Barometer 30.18, Humidity 69%, Visibility 8 mi, Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:23 pm. 60% chance of snow. High upper 20s. SW winds 10 – 20 mph with gusts to around 30.

100% of overnight snow. 2-4″ possible. Low mid 20s. SW 10 -20 mph.

Not much more than clouds today. The temperature isn’t as low as we’ve been experiencing but the wind is beastly and it feels very cold. Not looking forward to the snow coming tonight. I’m hoping we won’t get that much. We’ll see.

Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018 South West Michigan- Some Welcome Sunshine

Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018 South West Michigan- Some Welcome Sunshine

Currently 4 with an E wind of 2.6 mph ignoring that so it feels like the 4 degrees it is. Partly sunny with a 40% chance of evening snow showers. High 10 – 15. Light winds.

Cloudy with a 20% chance of snow showers in the evening. Low 5 -10. LS winds 5 – 15 mph. Wind Chill Readings as low as -14.

Tied a low temperature reading yesterday -9, and was the 7th time in the last 11 days we’ve been below zero. The cold continues but at least we’ve had a few peeks at the sun lately. Cold peeks, but still….

I am so grateful I didn’t have to do any traveling lately as the airports are a tangle of issues and angry passengers due to this miserable weather. Nothing like brutal cold, ice, and snow to call a halt to airplanes flying in or out of an airport.

I’ll tell you, by the time Spring rolls around this year, everyone -and I do mean everyone – is going to be overjoyed!

Currently 5 with a NNE wind of 2.6 mph not making a difference so it feels like 5 degrees. Dew Point 0, Barometer 30.33, Humidity 81%, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:21 pm. Partly sunny with a high near 10. NW winds 5 – 10 mph Wind Chill Readings to as low as nearly -15.

Partly cloudy with a 50% chance of snow. Low near 0. NW winds 5 – 10 mph. Wind Chill Readings to -14.

We have some sunshine today, which makes the spirit climb…now if only the temperature would do the same. Had some sunshine yesterday too, very cold, but bright. At least it gives a person the feeling of having energy so things can get done. This bitter cold is blanketing so much of the nation right now, it’s unbelievable how far to the south it’s spread.

All we can do is the best we can to keep warm and carry on. Eventually it will warm up…maybe..oh…April 18?

Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018 South West Michigan – Cold Covers So Many States!

Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018 South West Michigan – Cold Covers So Many States!

Currently 11 with a NNW wind of 4.8 mph dragging that down to feeling like -2. Dew Point 9, Barometer 30.18, Humidity 90%, visibility 9 mi, Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:20 pm. Partly cloudy with a 50% chance of snow showers. High near 15. N winds 5 – 15 mph with gusts to 25. Wind Chill Readings to -12.

70% chance of overnight snow. Low near 0. NW winds 10 mph. Wind Chill Readings to -15.

What a Winter Blast we’re experiencing. And I don’t mean just here, I mean all over the place – in places where Winter doesn’t usually make an appearance. Not like it does around here, anyway. Sledding down the middle of a street in Charleston, SC? Really? Yup. Hurricane winds – in the winter – slamming into the East Coast? Snowflakes in Florida? Absolutely. Crazy, extreme weather continues.

Last year we saw weather go nuts and do its utmost to make life miserable and here we are, in a brand new year, heading into the same territory. Extreme weather. The way we’re starting out, makes you wonder what miseries this next year will bring, doesn’t it? Does me, anyway.

Call it Climate Change, call it whatever makes you happy. But what ever you call it, we’re in it. Major cold, heat, drought, flooding, records of all sorts falling by the wayside left and right…you imagine it, we’re getting it. If nothing else, it’s fascinating. For those caught up in the worst of it all, it’s tragic. But no matter where you are in the picture, it’s impossible to guess what we’re going to get next. The only thing we can count on, is it’s probably not going to be good.

Just survive is the secret. Do your best and survive. And hope for the best for the future.

Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2017 South West Michigan – Word For Today Is Snow

Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2017 South West Michigan – Word For Today Is Snow

Currently 10 with a SSE wind of 1.8 mph not bothering that number so it feels like 10 degrees. Dew Point 10, Barometer 29.97, Humidity 100%, Visibility 524.9 yards, Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:19 pm. 100% chance of snow. 2-4″ expected. High 15-20. SW winds 5 – 15 mph becoming NW.

50% chance of overnight snow. Low 0-5. NW winds 5 – 15 mph Wind Chill Readings -15.

As bad as it is here, watching what is going on across this nation of ours is heartbreaking. Misery everywhere. What a brutal, beastly winter this is. That strong Jet Stream pushing nothing but horrid, frigid weather down all over us, is unbearable in many places. That Arctic Air is not going anywhere. It’s lodged and has no intention of leaving. What’s worse than the snow and bone-chilling cold are the reports of people losing their lives from fires as they try any way they can to keep warm. This is one ugly, unforgettable winter already.

Tuesday, Jan 2, 2018 South West Michigan – Cold Continues

Tuesday, Jan 2, 2018 South West Michigan – Cold Continues

Currently 16 degrees with a WSW wind of 4.4 mph dropping that to feeling like 10. Dew Point 13, Barometer 30.44, Humidity 85%, Visibility 9 mi, Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:18 pm. Mostly cloudy today with a high of 15-20. SW winds 10 – 2 0 mph with gusts to 30.

90% chance of overnight snow. Low 5 – 10. SW winds 10-15 mph with gusts to 30. Wind Chill Readings to -14.

The cold air continues – over what looks to be the majority of our nation. Today, in my little backyard, there’s a tiny uptick in the temperature. Nothing comfortable, mind you, but hey….15-20 degrees is a huge improvement over what it’s been. And I can see from the national weather maps, that it isn’t going to last beyond today. This extreme cold is flowing as far down as Florida, it’s bizarre. And blooming cold! So even though today isn’t as bad as it has been and will be, it’s still time to bundle up and stay warm.
