Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019- South West Michigan – Killer Cold Continues

Currently -7 with a W wind of 8 mph making it feel like -23.  Dew Point -12, Humidity 79%, Barometer 30.07 & rising, Visibility 7 mi., Sunrise 7:58 am, Sunset 5:52 pm. Early peeks at the sun, but most cloudy with a few snow flurries possible, high 5. W winds 5 – 10 mph.

Very cold. -3 for a low. Light and variable winds.

Winter Storm Warning continues through Today.

Beastly cold still. The snow I track in from  going out to feed the critters early morning that gets trapped by the back door never even thaws out from day to day now. It’s unbearable cold outside with wind chills in the -20 range. Yesterday the temperature never got above 0. We’ve all been asked by one of the utility companies to turn our thermostats down to 65 or lower through Friday. This is a cold spell nobody is going to soon forget. Much like we still talk about the blizzard of ’78, we’ll be remembering the Polar Vortex of ’19 for many years to come. Add the 15″ of snow we now have as ground cover and you can see, it’s been a miserable stretch of weather.

The picture is from my son, Bill, who took this early this morning of a rainbow attempting to form in the frigid air. Never saw anything that strange. It’s beautiful.

Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019-South West Michigan-Brutal Cold And The Snow Just Keeps Falling

Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019-South West Michigan-Brutal Cold And The Snow Just Keeps Falling

Currently -5 with a WSW wind of 14 mph making it feel like -25 degrees. Dew Point -12, Humidity 73%, Barometer 30.03 & rising, Visibility 4 mi., Sunrise 7:59am, Sunset 5:51 pm. 40% chance of snow. Windy, blowing snow, bitter cold. High 1, W winds around 20 mph.

Cold tonight. -2, 40% chance of more snow. W winds 10 -20 mph.

Winter Storm Warning continues in effect until Thursday afternoon. Brutal cold to continue.

We’re hearing rumors of big changes in temperature readings by this weekend, but it’s just getting there that’s a challenge. Basically, everything in my little corner of the world has closed. Schools – even those that hardly ever close – have been closed for 3 days, probably will be closed tomorrow, too. Mail and package deliveries halted, most offices closed. My advice to everyone is that if it isn’t absolutely necessary for you to be out and about, don’t be.

Too much snow out there for me to shovel, so I waded out to the spot where I feed the critters and swept as much of a square away as I could (that square is getting smaller by the day) and made my offering for helping to keep the creatures unfortunate enough to have to live out there alive. Measured another 3″ of new snow, making it about 14″ on the ground. But keep in mind, that isn’t totally accurate. Between being packed down and blown around, I’m fairly certain a lot more than that has fallen in the past few days. And the cold is unbearable. Brutal.

Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019-South West Michigan-Bitter Cold, Getting Colder, More Snow

Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019-South West Michigan-Bitter Cold, Getting Colder, More Snow

Currently 14 with an average wind from the SW of 15 mph making it feel like -2. Dew Point 10, Humidity 84%, Barometer 29.80, Visibility 0.8 mph, Sunrise 8:00am, Sunset 5:50 pm. Very cold, 90% chance of snow showers today, 3-5″ more expected, WSW winds 5 – 15 mph.

Bitterly cold tonight, -8 degrees expected, 50% chance of snow showers. W winds 15 -25 mph.

Winter Storm Warning In Effect Until 1:00pm Thursday.

Got a fresh 3″ of snow last night making it about 11″ on the ground this morning. It’s not only the snow, but the brutal cold that’s so dangerous. Tomorrow promises to be scary with actual temperatures at zero or below. It only takes minutes to make frostbite on exposed skin. People don’t really realize how quickly that can happen – until they are shown pictures of those who were caught unaware. Not pretty. I’ll tell you, the only time I’m going to be outside is to dash out and sweep off the place where I feed the critters and scatter a new offering in the morning. Did that already today. It’s cold. And I’m not shoveling anymore. Did a bit of that yesterday and even though I keep myself in pretty good shape, I feel it today. I’m done with it.

Monday, Jan. 28, 2019-South West Michigan-Snow And More Snow

Monday, Jan. 28, 2019-South West Michigan-Snow And More Snow

Currently 6 with an E wind of 16 mph making it feel like -13 degrees. Dew Point 3, Humidity 90%, Barometer 29.82 & falling, Visibility 0.3 mi., Sunrise 8:01 am, Sunset 5:18 pm. Winter Storm Warning in effect until 7pm today. 100% chance of snow, high 19. E winds 20-30 mph. Gusty winds will produce blowing snow.

70% chance of overnight snow. Low 7. WNW winds 10 -15 mph.

It’s an ugly day and going to get more so as time goes on. Not only that, but once this winter storm clears out, leaving us plenty of snow, the Polar Vortex is scheduled to visit us next. Our temperatures through the rest of the week will be below zero. Not wind chill. Actually temperatures. A vicious  week of winter weather to contend with.  Got about 5″ of overnight snow and that makes about 10″ on the ground for now.

Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019 South West Michigan – Big Storm On The Way

Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019 South West Michigan – Big Storm On The Way

Currently 9 with a WNW wind of 13 mph making it feel like -6 degrees. Dew Point -2, Humidity 61%, Barometer 30.11 & rising, Visibility 6 mi., Sunrise 8:02 am, Sunset 5:47 pm. 30& chance of scattered snow showers, partly cloudy afternoon. High 11. W  winds 10 -20mph.

100% chance of overnight snow. 3-5″ likely. Low 2. E winds 5 – 10 mph increasing to 10-20 mph.

Winter Storm Warning in effect until Monday evening. 8-12″ of snow expected, bitter cold temperatures.

Today the sun is peeking in and out of the clouds and it feels almost balmy when it’s putting in an appearance. It isn’t, trust me, but sunshine can work wonders on a person’s spirit.

We are anticipating – well, dreading is more like it – this latest Winter Storm Jayden. This one looks to be intending on taking aim at us, not sliding off to the north, south or anywhere, just barrelling down on our area. This could be a big snow maker that will leave us packed in for some time as the temperatures are going to stay brutal cold for the duration. Everyone is running around today tending to business and I feel badly for those who have to go in to work tomorrow. If this storm comes through, they might well end up being snowed in there – where ever it is. Not good.

Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019-South West Michigan – Cold, Much More Snow Coming

Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019-South West Michigan – Cold, Much More Snow Coming

Currently 3 with an average wind from the S of 6 mph making it feel like -7. Dew Point -3, Humidity 75%, Barometer 30.22 & falling, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8:03 am, Sunset 5:46 pm. Cloudy today with a few snow flurries possible. High 17.

Cloudy tonight with a 50% chance of snow flurries, low 8. SW winds 10 -15 mph.

Cold, but not too much more snow until sometime Sunday night and through Monday where we could, possibly, end up with a foot of new snow. SO not looking forward to this. The brutal cold is going to hang around until maybe next week Sunday where there is a chance of zooming way up into the 20 degree range. Will feel like a heat wave. This is a cruel streak of weather encompassing our nation – all thanks to the ornery Jet Stream bringing the frigid Canadian air with it. Frankly worried about this coming Monday. Should the snow build up and knock out power, I have no idea of how we’ll all survive the zero and below temperatures. Fingers crossed that this storm somehow manages to lessen or slip past us without as much harm as it looks to be bringing.

Friday, Jan. 25, 2019 South West Michigan – Cold And Snow Continue

Friday, Jan. 25, 2019 South West Michigan – Cold And Snow Continue

Currently 9 with a W wind of 13 mph making it feel like -6 degrees. Dew Point 3, Barometer 29.82 & rising, Humidity 74%, Visibility 4 mi., Sunrise 8:04 am, Sunset 5:44 pm. 90% chance of more snow today. High 11. W winds 10 -20 mph.

40% chance of overnight snow, mostly in the evening. Low -1. WNW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7pm today.

Measured almost 3″ of overnight snow. At least this one was a lighter, fluffier variety, easier to push a path through. The brutal cold air is going to keep pouring down from Canada through next week. In fact, at the moment, our next Wednesday is scheduled to be only 3 degrees all day long. Sure looking forward to that.

Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019-South West Michigan-Cold, Getting Much Colder With Snow Coming

Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019-South West Michigan-Cold, Getting Much Colder With Snow Coming

Currently 24 with a W wind of 8 mph making it feel like 15 degrees. Dew Point 16, Barometer 29.82 & rising, Humidity 72%, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8:05 am, Sunset 5:13 pm. Cloudy with a 60% chance of afternoon snow. High 27. W winds 10 -15 mph.

Cloudy with a 50% chance of overnight snow. Low 8. W winds 15 – 25 mph.

A harsh Arctic Blast is taking aim at the country and it’s going to be brutal. Personally, as ugly as it is out there this morning, I’m going to be out and about trying to tend to some errands, because, frankly, I don’t think I’m going to be outside beyond feeding the critters for the next week. At least.

Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2 019-South West Michigan-Heavy Wet Snow, Freezing Rain. It’s A Mess!

Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2 019-South West Michigan-Heavy Wet Snow, Freezing Rain. It’s A Mess!

Currently 33 with an E wind of 5 mph making it feel like 29 degrees. Dew Point 32, Barometer 29.68 & falling, Humidity 95%, Visibility 4 mi., Sunrise 8:05 am, Sunset 5:42 pm. 70% chance of snow, then rain, then rain, snow mix. High 37. SSE winds 5-10 mph shifting to W 10-20 mph.

Cloudy with a few snow flurries possible overnight, low 21. WNW winds 10 -15 mph.

It’s a mess outside this morning. Tried to shovel some snow along my back patio to get out to feed the critters…no way! It’s a heavy, wet snow. I pushed some of it along and dumped it, then simply gave up. Hard to measure precip in a mix like this. Measured a good 1″ of new snow, but that had been weighed down by sleet, freezing rain, so not accurate but the best I can do. Looks to be about 4.5″ of snow out there, but like I said, been packed down to that by a variety of precipitation. And then by Friday? Back down to a high of about 11, so this hideous mess will freeze into all sorts of unhappy surfaces. Winter! What an ugly season.

Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019-South West Michigan-Bundle Up Cold, Snow On The Way

Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019-South West Michigan-Bundle Up Cold, Snow On The Way

Currently 13 with a SE wind of 12 mph making it feel like -2. Dew Point -3, Barometer 30.36 & falling, Humidity 48%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:06 am, Sunset 5:40 pm. Cloudy with a 70% chance of afternoon snow showers. High 27. SSE 10 -15 mph.

90% chance of overnight snow. Mix of rain/snow early. Low 26. S winds 5 – 10 mph.

The cold isn’t bad enough, more snow is on the way with a Winter Storm Watch in effect from 1:00 this afternoon through Wednesday morning. The blowing wind is making the wind chill dip way down to the dangerous level. This is not a pleasant stretch of weather – no place in the nation that I can see. For us it’s cold, snow coming, and then another dip into the frigid temperatures. No relief in sight.
