Ushering out 2017 with cold and snow, set to welcome 2018 with – what else – snow and cold. This is that year I’ve been predicting and I sure don’t see any change in what we’re dealing with. Not any time soon, anyway. Brutal cold and it’s spread across most of the nation. Why Canada decided to be so very generous with their cold air, we don’t really know, but there’s no way we’re sending notes of thanks.

I’m wishing everyone a safe New Year’s Eve – and one as warm as you can make it. Enjoy, but be safe.

Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017 South West Michigan – Snow & Cold Continue

Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017 South West Michigan – Snow & Cold Continue

Currently 8 degrees with a WNW wind of 14 mph dragging that down to feeling like -6. Dew Point 7, Barometer 30.11, Humidity 94%, Visibility 4 mi, Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:15 pm. 100% chance of snow today. Another 1 – 2″ possible. High 10 – 15. NW winds 10 – 15 mph with gusts to 25.

20% chance of overnight snow. Low 0. Wind Chill Readings to -12.

Someone asked me this morning when is the snow ever going to stop. I guessed about April 18. We seem to be caught in some hideous cold air, snow, wind tunnel and there’s no escape.

Got a handy little gizmo on my IPhone called Hum and it helps me keep track of what’s going on with my car. Danged if this little rascal, at 2:00 in the morning, didn’t let me know that there’s a good chance my car battery won’t start.  Not any way in the world was I getting up in the dark, dead of night, below zero temperatures, bundling up and wading through the snow up the hill to that garage is located. Now I have a tiny – and I do mean a tiny – garage here at this townhouse and my car is pulled into it, head first, and if it won’t start, I have no idea of who anyone or anything is going to be able to get in there and charge it. I have tons of errands to do today and so this is already promising to be a dandy, fun little morning.

Have I told you lately how much I hate winter?

This is evidently Winter Storm Frankie we’re experiencing at the moment. Swell. Bad enough, the snow, the cold, but the wind makes it all so much worse. This is, indeed, a dreadful winter so far – and it’s only beginning. This is not one we’re going to look back on with fondness or happy thoughts.

Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017 South West Michigan – Cold, Light Snow

Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017 South West Michigan – Cold, Light Snow

Currently 3 degrees with an E wind of 2.6 mph dropping that down to feeling like -4. Dew Point 3, Barometer 30.62, Humidity 99%, Visibility 8 mi, Sunrise 8:13 m, Sunset 5:14 pm. 70% chance of snow showers. High 10 – 15 mph. SE winds 5 – 10 mph. Wind Chill Readings -12.

Not a break in the weather on tap. It’s going to stay cold and light snow continues to show up in the forecast. Looks like most of our entire country is caught in this Arctic Air grip so I can’t really complain. Well, I can, but since it doesn’t do any good… At any rate, me I’m lucky enough to be able to stay inside and avoid as much of this unpleasant weather as possible. I feel very bad for those who have to venture out to go to work – and especially for those who have to actually work IN this. Nothing good about this at all.

Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017 South West Michigan – Frigid Temperatures

Partly cloudy with a 40% chance of overnight snow showers. Low near -5. Light winds. Wind Chill Readings to -14.

This is brutal cold. When I woke up this morning it was -11. Not wind chill, actual temperature. Got another inch or so of snow, but for a grand total, it’s so cold and packing down that right now I only measure about 6.5″ on the ground. Been a lot more that fell, but it’s huddled together for warmth just like the rest of us. This is a horrid winter and it’s only just begun. I predicted this, seemed to me we were due and things were bracing up to be bad, but was hoping I was wrong. Unfortunately, I wasn’t.

Had a total of a bit more than 6″ of snow in my backyard. Grand Rapids recorded 7″ – the snowiest Christmas since 1990. And we’re bound and determined to set some records for cold temperatures this coming week.

It’s brutal cold for us this week as the Arctic Air coming tumbling down from Canada. Toss in some snow and this will be one miserable week. Nothing pleasant to report about it…well, maybe I could see some positive in it all that we’re not involved in a blizzard, but other than that? Nothing. Bitter cold and snow. Just plain lousy weather.

Monday, Dec. 25, 2017 South West Michigan – We Have A Very White Christmas

Monday, Dec. 25, 2017 South West Michigan – We Have A Very White Christmas

Got 4″ of new snow overnight and it’s very cold out there. Going to be dangerously cold here this week. In fact, it sounds as if it’s going to be a miserable week coming up! For everyone frantic to get a White Christmas, we most certainly have one. Me? I’m not so thrilled by it all. Between the Arctic Air coming at us and the snow dumping on us, it’s certainly winter and my least favorite season in spades.

I love Christmas but thinking of the traveling I have to do today I’m more inclined to be of the Christmas – Bah Humbug variety this year.

Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017 South West Michigan – Christmas Eve Snowstorm Coming

100% chance of overnight snow. 1 – 3″ expected. Low 15 – 20. NW winds 10 mph becoming W.

Swell. Just in time for Christmas we have bitter cold and snow on the way. Should make for some very interesting travel tomorrow. And I’ll be one of them out there traveling. With a couple of crock pots of hot food and a big bag of presents. Dang. The rotten weather couldn’t hold off for one more day? Not looking forward to this in the least. My only hope is that this be one of the times the weather somehow finds its way around us and doesn’t do us so much damage. We’ll certainly see.

Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017 South West Michigan – Calm Saturday Before Christmas

Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017 South West Michigan – Calm Saturday Before Christmas

Currently 29 degrees with a NW wind of 0.9 mph making no difference, so it feels like 29. Dew Point 25, Barometer 29.98, Humidity 84%, Visibility 9 mi, Sunrise 8:11 am, Sunset 5:11 pm. Partly cloudy, low in the lower 30s. NW winds 10 – 15 mph.

Mostly cloudy to partly cloudy tonight, low 15 – 20. NW wind 10 – 15 mph decreasing to 10.

For my area, a decent last Saturday before Christmas. I do have to dart out to the grocery store for a couple of small things I missed, but other than that, I can – and happily – avoid the crowded stores full of last minute shoppers. Whew! Wish I’d been smart enough not to miss any recipe ingredients but hey…no biggie. Should take me only a few minutes to take care of my needs. It does look as if Christmas day is going to be snowy and very cold. Oh well…can’t have it all. I think we all need to appreciate this day because looking at the national weather map others sure don’t have it this smooth today.

Friday, Dec. 22, 2017 South West Michigan – Light Snow, Lighter Freezing Drizzle Possible

Friday, Dec. 22, 2017 South West Michigan – Light Snow, Lighter Freezing Drizzle Possible

Currently 30 degrees with a NE wind of 2.4 mph making no difference so it feels like 30. Dew Point 30, Barometer 30, Humidity 100%, Visibility 5 mi, Sunrise 8:11 am, Sunset 5:10 pm. 90% chance of light snow possibly mixed with light freezing drizzle. High lower 30s. Light winds.

20% chance of the same overnight, low upper 20s. Light winds.

Got about .10″ in the rain gauge overnight. Maybe .20″ of fresh snow. Hard to tell how much was pure snow and how much was a freezing drizzle addition. At any rate, still about 3″ on the ground. Packing down but not vanishing. Sure don’t care for hearing that freezing drizzle nonsense. Snow is bad enough the freezing rain is misery. Hoping we don’t get much along those lines.
