Friday, Nov. 10, 2017 South West Michigan – Light Snowfall Overnight

Friday, Nov. 10, 2017 South West Michigan – Light Snowfall Overnight

Currently 22 degress with an ENE wind of 5.3 mph dropping that down to feeling like 15. Dew Point 12, Humidity 66%, Barometer 30.54, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 7:27 am, Sunset 5:23 pm.  Sunny today with a high only in the upper 20s. E wind 5 – 10 mph.

Partly cloudy overnight with a low of 15 – 20. SE winds 5 – 10 mph.

First real snowfall of the season.  Had a measurement of .01” in the gauge this morning. Not much, but visible here and there. So an official ‘Trace’ on the ground. Just the beginning of what will be a long, long, long, long season for me. Spring slips by, Summer flashes past, and Autumn hurries on, but Winter? That one seems to hang on like a barnacle on a boat bottom.

Got all the winter gear lined up. I guess I’m about as ready as I can be.

Thursday, Nov 9, 2017 South West Michigan – Waiting for Rain/Snow Mix

Thursday, Nov 9, 2017 South West Michigan – Waiting for Rain/Snow Mix

Currently 40 with a WSW wind of 5 mph dragging that down to feeling like 35. Dew Point 39, Humidity 95%, Barometer 29.9, Visibility 8 mi, Sunrise 7:26 am, Sunset 5:24 pm. 70% chance of rain showers possibly mixed with snow showers. High around 40. W wind 10 – 20 mph becoming NW 15 – 20 in the evening.

Partly cloudy with a 50% chance of snow showers in the evening. Low 15-20. NW winds 5 – 15 mph with gusts to around 30.

I was happy to catch a little color in the sky yesterday evening. Mostly because it won’t be long before my world has dulled down and become basically colorless. That’s what winter does around here. Our color palette becomes white, black, gray. It’s not fun or pretty. Not to me. Color makes me happy and there isn’t much about winter that does make me happy, especially the lack of color.

So this is me, camera in hand, out seriously searching for color to store up to last me until spring.

Wed. Nov 8, 2017 South West Michigan – Cold Nights Bringing Down Leaves

Wed. Nov 8, 2017 South West Michigan – Cold Nights Bringing Down Leaves

Currently 39 degrees with a S wind of 2.4 mph leaving it to feel like 39. Dew Point 34, Humidity 82%, Barometer 30.23, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 7:25 am, Sunset 5:25 pm. Mostly cloudy morning will become a partly cloudy afternoon, high mid 40s. S winds around 10 mph becoming W.

Partly cloudy evening will becoming mostly cloudy overnight. Low in the lower 30s. SW winds 5 – 10 mph with gusts to 20.

The most amazing sight this morning. I opened the blinds in time to witness a major leaf fall. No wind, no sound, just thousands of leaves that evidently decided to let go and drift groundward all at once. It was beautiful! I sank down in the nearby chair and simply sat there watching it for the longest time. I’ve sat in that chair watching rainfall and some heavy snowfalls, but never caught a leaf fall and I’m thrilled that I did this morning.

This is the first year that either I or someone else hasn’t been out in the back yard raking up leaves. And in all honesty, after the beauty outside this fall, I’ll never rake another Autumn leaf. The most gorgeous carpet of color you could imagine has been mine as I look out the window. I’m enchanted by it all.

I know that it won’t be long before it’s all covered up by the colorless white that winter brings, but the leaves in all their Autumn glory have made my tiny backyard a wonder. And I’m so appreciative of that.

Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017 South West Michigan – Cool But Mostly Sunny

Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017 South West Michigan – Cool But Mostly Sunny

Currently 43 degrees with a NE wind. Feels like 43. Dew Point 30, Humidity 61%, Barometer 30.25, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 7:24 am, Sunset 5:26 pm. Partly sunny today with a low in the lower 40s.

Mostly clear tonight in the upper 20s.

Getting cooler out there. Night times now are most certainly on the nippy side. It does feel better on a day like this with some sun showing up there in the sky. Along with some fascinating clouds.

Like TV in the sky, clouds put on an almost daily show for us. All we have to do is observe. Carefully. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve had to pull over in a driveway or someplace in order to get a better look at some cloud formation – or how many times I’ve had to take a picture of it all. I suppose that’s why I always allow myself a little extra time to get someplace. I know I’ll be taking little detours along the way. But the results are terrific.

Like having favorite DVDs that you can haul out and watch whenever you feel like it, my cloud pictures are that for me. My favorites I keep around. Sometimes they become computer backgrounds for my desktop. The picture of the day  or the month  or the year – they all deserve top billing in my line up.

And the Weather Oscar goes to…..

Monday, Nov. 6, 2017 South West Michigan – Colder Temps In Store

Monday, Nov. 6, 2017 South West Michigan – Colder Temps In Store

Currently 37 degrees with a NNW wind of 7 mph making that feel like 32. Dew Point 30, Humidity 74%, Barometer 30.19, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 7:23 am, Sunset 5:27 pm. Mostly sunny today with a high in the mid 40s.

Partly cloudy tonight with a low in the lower 30s.

What’s in a name? November’s full Moon is called the Beaver Moon from back when Native Americans, in this case, the Algonquin tribes, used the monthly Moons and nature’s signs as a calendar to track the seasons.

This time, this moon, indicates the best month to set the beaver traps before the water froze so there would be a good supply of warm winter furs. So if you’re going to be setting any of those beaver traps, this is might be a good time to take care of that. Personally, I think I’ll let the beaver keep their warmth and likely end up knitting something warm. Seems a more sporting thing to do to me.

These days, we really don’t need any specific moon to tell us we need to prepare for cold weather, for rounding up our warm hats. But I guess in addition to our trusty calendars, it’s probably nice to have this added incentive, this full moon urging us on to be prepared.

This is also known as the Full Frost Moon and it’s about the right time for that to come into play, too. Warm hats, frost…all a part of my least favorite season. Going to be getting colder around here. But hey, the moon is pretty. I will admit that.

Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017 South West Michigan – Super Foggy Morning

Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017 South West Michigan – Super Foggy Morning

Currently 51 degrees with a WSW wind of 2 mph. Feels like 51, Dew Point, 51, Humidity 100%, Barometer 29.67, Visibility 1.5 mi, Sunrise  7:21 am, Sunset 5:28 pm. Foggy. 80% chance of rain, possible thunderstorms, high mid 50s. SW winds 5 – 10 mph becoming W.

Cloudy tonight with a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Low upper 30s. N W winds 5 – 10 mph.

Wrapped in the warm fuzz of fog this morning. Okay, so granted, I’m not going anywhere. In which case, the fog is my friend. Here I sit all cozy and secure with the fog swirling around in a soft layer of quiet. Why do I like the fog so much?

If I had to be out and about in this thick layer of basically low-lying cloud, would I be so enthralled with it? No. You and I both know I would not. I’ve had to be out there in the past driving in fog so thick you had to get almost under a traffic light to see what color it was. Not good. Not good in the least. But for me now, when I don’t have to do anything but watch the fog through the windows, or venture out far enough to try and catch a good picture, it’s an entirely different story.  A story I love being a part of.

This chapter, this page, this day, is heavily laden with the soft gray tangled yarn of warm air, struggling to be able to stay around with the colder air trying to get it to move on. And I’m right here, in my little nest, loving it all.

Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017 South West Michigan – Tonight We Play The Idiotic Time Change Game

Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017 South West Michigan – Tonight We Play The Idiotic Time Change Game

Currently 38, Average wind ENE 5.9 mph, feels like 32. Dew Point 35, Humidity 90%, Barometer 30.13, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 8:20 am, Sunset 6:30 pm. 90% chance of rain, thunder possible in the afternoon. High in the mid 40s. E winds 10 – 15 mph with gusts to 25.

70% chance of overnight rain. Low mid 40s. SE winds 5 – 10 mph becoming SW overnight.

Yup, time for that idiotic time change game again. Daylight Savings Time. Yeah, right. That time again where we all have to wander through the house and reset the time on each of the clocks and watches just so…what again? What is the reason for this nonsense? Whatever it originally was, it’s time to call a halt to it.

I don’t even care which one, just pick on and stick with it. This is foolish to keep playing God with the time. Wonder why it never occurred to someone in official office that it would be fun and games to start shifting the days around. Surely they could get that passed and really mess with us. I’m sure it’s right down the line someplace, it probably hasn’t made the rounds of all the places and people capable of profiting from it yet. Once it clears all that, and the lobbyists get their money in the game…it’s likely going to be yet another piece of idiocy passed on to us. Well…wait a minute…they already did a version of that when they moved so many of the holidays to a Monday, for convenience or whatever the reason was for that. Never-the-less, I’m sure there’s a better, broader version being worked on as we speak.

In the meantime, let’s do all play the fake time game and screw around with that for awhile. Grrrr……

Friday, Nov. 3, 2017 South West Michigan – Blue Skies And Sunshine

Friday, Nov. 3, 2017 South West Michigan – Blue Skies And Sunshine

Currently 42 degrees with a W wind almost calm making no difference to that number. Feels like 42. Dew Point 40, Humidity 94%, Barometer 30.21, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 8:18 am, Sunset 6:31 pm. Partly sunny becoming mostly sunny this afternoon. High upper 40s. NE winds 5 – 10 mph.

Cloudy tonight with a low in the mid 30s. E wind 5 – 15 mph becoming W 5 – 10 mph.

Today should be a wonderful day to get outside and tend to those chores that might have been put off due to so much rain lately. And this could be one of the few days left to be taking care of those things. Rain moves back in tomorrow with Sunday coming up with a good chance of some severe weather. So, hop to it, is my advise. I know I’m going to be doing exactly that.

Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017 South West Michigan – Foggy Start To The Day

Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017 South West Michigan – Foggy Start To The Day

Currently 46 degrees with a SW wind of 2 mph making no difference, so it feels like 46. Dew Point 46, Humidity 100%, Barometer 29.86, Visibility 1.5 mi, Sunrise 8:17 am, Sunset 6:32 pm. Foggy. 80% chance of morning drizzle, afternoon rain. High lower 50s. Light winds.

70% chance of evening rain. Low upper 30s. Light winds becoming NW 5 – 10 mph.

Getting a good variety of weather later. Rain, snow, sleet, fog, sun, clouds….you name it, we’ve had it. I like that. There’s no telling what each day will bring, weather-wise, and that’s always exciting. Well, to me, it is. Not much more interesting than the weather for folks like me. And with the Internet and the Weather Channel bringing the weather of the entire world for us to witness, it’s even more exciting than ever.

Who would have thought, some 10 – 20 years ago, that I could be sitting in my comfy nest, watching the weather hit Wales and Scotland or Florida or Puerto Rico or….it’s amazing to me. Completely fascinating.

What I wish is that I could start all over and be a meteorologist. If wishes were grantable….

Monday, Nov. 1, 2017 South West Michigan – Rain/Snow Yesterday, Only Rain Today

Monday, Nov. 1, 2017 South West Michigan – Rain/Snow Yesterday, Only Rain Today

Currently 35 degrees with a SSE wind of 2 mph ignoring that, so it feels like 35. Dew Point 29, Humidity 78%, Barometer 30, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 8:16 am, Sunset 6:34 pm. Cloudy today with a 20% chance of afternoon rain. High in the mid 40s. S winds 5 – 10 mph.

100% chance of overnight rain showers. Low lower 40s. SE winds 5 – 10 mph becoming S.

Well, yesterday alternated between snow/sleet/rain showers. Didn’t amount to much in the rain gauge. Only .06″. Perfectly ugly weather none-the-less. Today it would appear not to hold any of the nasty S word for us, but very likely more rain, with what looks to be days of rain ahead of us. I think that’s okay. This time of year can be iffy in Michigan and all that rain could jolly well be snow. I’ll take the rain, thank you.
