An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

Wind already kicking up this morning and with it coming in at 20 -30 mph this afternoon, I suspect a lot of leaves will hit the ground again today. It’s cool this morning, but hey…it’s Autumn. Going to stay that way now. Looks as if  Wednesday night we’ll see it drop below freezing for the first time. I’m so not ready for this. But then again, I’m never ready for it.

Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018 South West Michigan – Cloudy, A Bit Cool

Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018 South West Michigan – Cloudy, A Bit Cool

Currently 48 with a S wind of 7 mph. Feels like 44 degrees. Dew Point 40, Humidity 75%, Barometer 30.07 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:54 am, Sunset 7:00 pm. Partly cloudy, high 59. SSW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Mostly cloudy tonight with a 60% chance of showers. Low 41. WNW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Not a bad day with a bit of sun occasionally peeking through the clouds. Plenty of color showing up now but so much is still green. It’s always interesting, every year, to see how much is able to color up and drop before ugly weather plows in and knocks them down still far from their capability.

Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018 South West Michigan – Sunny Autumn Saturday

Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018 South West Michigan – Sunny Autumn Saturday

Currently 36 with an average wind from the WSW of 4 mph. Feels like 33 degrees. Dew Point 31, Humidity 81%, Barometer 29.99 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:53 am, Sunset 7:02 pm. Lots of sunshine, high 51. WSW winds 10 – 15 mph.

Partly cloudy with a low of 41. SSW winds 5 – 10 mph.

A sunny Saturday and since the peak of color is coming on us, I suspect the roads and byways will be overloaded with leaf-peepers. Cameras will be snapping pictures left and right resulting in lovely shots of Michigan Autumn.

And I am so heartbroken for the people in Mexico City, Florida. Just seen the pictures of what’s left there – and technically, there is nothing. Even the structures still standing are only partial, totally destroyed. The entire city has been wiped off the map, basically, by Hurricane Michael. It’s truly heartbreaking the damage Mother Nature can heap on humans.

Mostly cloudy becoming partly cloudy tonight, low 33. WNW winds 5 -10 mph.

Oh yeah. Back to the grabbing a jacket before heading out days. From now on, I suspect, it will only get more chilly as the days roll along. I guess being in the middle of October this is the way it should be. Not the way I’d like it to be though. What can I say? I like the hot weather.

Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018 South West Michigan – Temperatures Falling Through The Day

Cloudy overnight with a slight chance of rain. Low 38. WNW winds 10 – 20 mph.

Woke to the high of the day – 51 – and the temperature has begun it’s downhill slide. We’ve, unfortunately, seen the last of our warm weather. Measured 1.10″ of overnight rain in the gauge this morning.

I put away the Hummingbird feeders this morning. Last one I saw was last Saturday. Made me sad, but I just hope the little feathered creatures travel safe, manage to stay out of inclement weather and find enough to eat along the way. Going to be a long time before I see another one again. :<(

Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018 South West Michigan – Cold Front Coming Tonight

Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018 South West Michigan – Cold Front Coming Tonight

Currently 66 with an average wind from the SSE of 7 mph. Feels like 66. Dew Point 63, Humidity 90%, Barometer 29.80 & falling, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:49 am, Sunset 7:07 pm. 100% chance of rain showers and thunderstorms. Locally heavy rainfall possible. High 73. S winds 10 -20 mph.

Rather warm today but tomorrow will be totally different. A cold front is taking aim at us and will scoop the warmth on out, leaving behind a chilly day for tomorrow with 20 degrees difference.

I’m so nervous for the people in Florida. Folks who have never seen the severity of the storm that is coming in to the panhandle of Florida who have made the decision to stay put and ride this out. I think they are in for the shock of their lives – and perhaps it will mean their lives. Period. Going to be a bad time down there starting this afternoon.

Feels like a warm, humid August morning…what? It’s October? Could have fooled me. This isn’t going to hang around, but it certainly is unusual for now. Going to drop 20 -30 degrees by the end of the week so the thing to do is to enjoy this respite from Autumn while it lasts.

Monday, Oct. 8, 2018 South West Michigan – Foggy, Unseasonable Warmth Again

Monday, Oct. 8, 2018 South West Michigan – Foggy, Unseasonable Warmth Again

Currently 57 with an ESE wind of 5 mph. Feels like 56. Dew Point 57, Humidity 100%, Barometer 30.12 & falling, Visibility 0.3 mi., Sunrise 7:47 am, Sunset 7:11 pm. Mostly cloudy today with the possibility of a stray shower or thunderstorm. High 82. SSW winds 10 -15 mph.

Partly cloudy tonight with a low of 66. S winds 5 -10 mph.

Autumn is usually a time of strange weather and this time around is holding true to form. Warm, even hot, one day, dropping 20 -25 degrees the next. Right now we’re heading into a couple of overly-warm days and then around Thursday, down 30 degrees. No time to shift clothes in the closet yet because from day to day you don’t know if you’re going to need warm clothes or something cooler. A bit of a roller coaster ride. At any rate, today we have fog, and climbing temperatures, a bit of rain likely. After the gloomy, chilly weekend, today doesn’t sound all that bad.

Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018 South West Michigan – Chilly Autumn Sunday

Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018 South West Michigan – Chilly Autumn Sunday

40% chance of overnight rain. Low 52. E winds 10 -15 mph.

Colder now than when I got up this morning. It’s a chilly, damp day out there and not much fun.

I haven’t seen a Hummingbird yet this morning. I’m wondering if the little bundles of feathers have started their long, arduous journey. If they have, I wish the a safe trip with the hope of seeing them back here next Spring.

Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018 South West Michigan – Rainy Autumn Saturday

Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018 South West Michigan – Rainy Autumn Saturday

Currently 63 with a S wind of 7 mph. Feels like 63 degrees. Dew Point 62, Humidity 99%, Barometer 29.93, Visibility 6 mi., Sunrise 7:45 am, Sunset 7:14 pm. 50% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. High near 70. WNW winds 5 -10 mph.

80% chance of overnight showers and thunderstorms. Low 53. NE winds 5 – 10 mph.

Been raining off and on all morning and I measured .66″ of rain in the gauge this morning.  The bees, swarming over the Hummingbird feeder don’t seem to care whether it’s raining or not. I care that they’re there, however, because this is the time the Hummers need to be feeding heavy – they’re set to fly off any day now. And so far, the bees aren’t allowing the little Hummingbirds in to feed. They’ve been trying, but just can’t get through those rotten bees. And I know. I know. The bees need the food too. But I don’t put that feeder out for them, I do so for the Hummingbirds. Drat!
