Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023-SW Michigan-January Departing On A Cold Note

Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023-SW Michigan-January Departing On A Cold Note

Currently 7 with an average wind from the SE of 3 mph. Feels like -2 degrees. Dew Point 8, Barometer 30.26, Humidity 90%, Visibility 7 mi., Sunrise 7:58 am, Sunset 5:53 pm.

Partly sunny with a 40% chance of some snow showers. High 15-20. SW winds 5-15 mph in the afternoon.

Mostly cloudy with a 40% chance of snow showers. Low 5-10 with gusts to 20 in the afternoon.

Should be a tad warmer the next couple of days, but even at that we’re only talking about 20 degrees. Unfortunately, Friday will be another bitter cold day and night. We can take heart that next week our temperatures will be back up to something that will feel almost comfortable after this week. A bit of sunshine this week should help us feel cheerier, but it won’t help us feel warm.  Hang in there. The weather will get better. The Arctic air we’re being gifted with won’t stay around forever. And keep in mind, we only have February to get through. March could be nice. Spring is right around the corner. Still a rather far off corner, but still…

Monday, Jan. 30, 2023-SW Michigan-Not Yet But Sunshine Coming In A Couple Of Days

Monday, Jan. 30, 2023-SW Michigan-Not Yet But Sunshine Coming In A Couple Of Days

Currently 19 with an average wind from the SW of 2 mph. Feels like 10 degrees. Dew Point 15, Barometer 30.16, Humidity 92%, Visibility 2.3 mi., Sunrise 8:00 am, Sunset 5:52 pm.

Cloudy with a 20% chance of snow showers. High near 20 and falling to around 15 by late afternoon. Wind chill readings as low as zero. WNW winds 5-15 with gusts to 21.

20% chance of light snow showers. Low around 5 with wind chills to -3. WNW winds 3-8 mph.

Going to be mighty chilly around here for a couple of days but things will improve. Granted, temperatures in the 20s might not seem like such an improvement but toss in a bit of sunshine and it’s going to feel much better. We should, if things stay on track, be allowed some sunshine for 2 or maybe even 3 days this week. Doubt it will be anything like an all day sun, but any at all will be welcome. And temperatures out of the teens with below zero wind chills are bound to feel better. In the meantime, bundle up and try to keep warm from this current Arctic Blast. We can do this.

Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023-SW Michigan- Clouds Today After Big Overnight Snow

Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023-SW Michigan- Clouds Today After Big Overnight Snow

Currently 25 with an average wind from the S of 7 mph. Feels like 14 degrees. Dew Point 20, Barometer 30.05, Humidity 94%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:00 am, Sunset 5:50 pm.

Mostly cloudy today with a high in the upper 20s. N winds 5-10 mph.

Cloudy with a 30% chance of overnight snow. Low 15-20. Light winds becoming NW 5-10 mph.

I measured 9 1/2″ of new snow in my little backyard this morning. That’s plenty. In fact, that’s enough. But I doubt that’s the way it’s going to go. Fairly certain we’ll get more snow before winter loosens its hold on us and departs.

I hesitate to mention it but as of right now, it looks as if we’re going to see some sunshine this coming Wednesday. Maybe even a bit on Thursday, perhaps Friday. Going to be a beastly cold week, but we could see some brightness tucked in among all the chill. That sunshine, if it shows up, won’t do anything to warm things up, but it sure will lighten up spirits tired of gray, gloomy days. We shall see how it goes. Keep those fingers crossed.

Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023-SW Michigan-Here Comes Another Winter Storm

Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023-SW Michigan-Here Comes Another Winter Storm

Currently 25 with an average wind from the SSW of 1 mph. Feels like 19 degrees. Dew Point 23, Barometer 30.06, Humidity 80%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:01 am, Sunset 5:49 pm.

Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 10:00 Sunday morning.

80% chance of afternoon snow. 1-2″ possible. High in the upper 20s W winds 5-10 mph with gusts to 20 becoming light in the afternoon.

100% chance of overnight snow. 3-5″. Low in the mid 20-s. NE winds 5-15 mph with gusts to 25.

So Winter Storm Leona is going to dump snow on us followed by an Arctic Blast of freezing air that’s going to make the beginning of the week wicked cold.  Not going to be a fun time for any of us. Especially those who must get out and about in all of it.  No playing nice from Mother Nature for a while. February is always a cold, cruel month but January is going to join the club by going out on a mean streak. Just be careful, stay as warm as you can.

Friday, Jan. 27, 2023-SW Michigan-Rare January Morning Sunshine

Friday, Jan. 27, 2023-SW Michigan-Rare January Morning Sunshine

Currently 21 with an average wind from the S of 16 mph. Feels like 9 degrees. Dew Point 15, Barometer 29.72, Humidity 81%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:02 am, Sunset 5:48 pm.

Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 8:00 this evening.

100% chance of afternoon snow. 1-3″ possible. High in the mid 30s. S winds 15-20 mph with gusts to 40.

Cloudy with a 50% chance of overnight snow showers. Low in the lower 20s. W winds 10-20 mph with gusts to 35.

Well, a surprise visit from the sun this morning. Most welcome even though it’s really cold out there. Sort of a trade-off. Mother Nature grants us with a bit of sun, then makes sure we pay for it with low temperatures and a cold wind. So be it. Worth it to see some brightness in the sky. Personally, it was too much to resist so I went out and about in the cold and took care of a few errands. Thrilled to be back inside in the warmth. I wouldn’t be looking for any more of this sunshine for a while but this morning was a happy surprise. Snow, clouds and cold ahead. Enjoy this brief time, folks. Bundle up and bask in the sunshine.  Granted, a weak one, but it’s by gosh there. More than we’ve had in some time.

Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023-SW Michigan-More Snow Showers Today

Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023-SW Michigan-More Snow Showers Today

Currently 28 with a calm wind from the SSW. Feels like 23 degrees. Dew Point 30, Barometer 29.7, Humidity 100%, Visibility 2.1, Sunrise 8:03 am, Sunset 5:46 pm.

70% chance of snow showers. High in the lower 30s. NW winds 5-10 with gusts to 20 in the afternoon.

50% chance of overnight snow showers. Low around 20. NW winds 5-10 mph becoming SW with gusts to 25.

Got about 4″ of snow in my little backyard. More snow showers expected today but no big additional accumulation likely. And looking ahead there’s still nothing but clouds and snow in our forecast.

Personally, I’m daydreaming of sunshine, flowers and warm breezes. Nothing local, of course, but with a little creativity, I can move it all much closer to me than reality permits. Doesn’t really make me feel any cozier but I have a very good imagination. And good sturdy blinds I can keep closed to block out what’s really going on out there. Works for me. At least as good as anything that helps me get through winter and on into spring. For the rest of you, sorry to say, it’s clouds and snow flurries.

Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023-SW Michigan-Winter Weather Advisory In Effect

Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023-SW Michigan-Winter Weather Advisory In Effect

Currently 28 with an average wind from the NE of 5 mph. Feels like 24 degrees. Dew Point 28, Barometer 29.73, Humidity 100%, Visibility 4 mi., Sunrise 8:04 am, Sunset 5:45 pm.

Winter Weather Advisory In Effect until 10:00 tonight.

100% chance of snow today. 2-4″ possible. High in the mid 30s. E winds 10-15 mph becoming NE 15-20 with gusts to 30 in the afternoon.

Mostly cloudy with a 50% chance of overnight snow. Low in the upper 20s. NW 5-15 mph with gusts to 25.

Not only are we getting snow today, but it pains me to say the word snow appears in each and every day for the next coming week. No telling how much we’ll end up with, maybe not that much, but it will definitely be white around here. Don’t bother looking for any sunshine because if it does manage to put in an appearance for the duration, it’s going to be a sneak attack.  Mostly you should just keep the snow shovel as well as the window scraper for your car handy and wait it all out.  Keep in mind we’re getting closer to the end of January and that leaves only one really crummy month ahead. That’s a good and encouraging thought. In the meantime, it’s boots and gloves for us.

Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023-SW Michigan-Surprise! More Clouds, Some Snow

Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023-SW Michigan-Surprise! More Clouds, Some Snow

Currently 31 with an average wind from the S of 3 mph. Feels like 31 degrees. Dew Point 30, Barometer 30.07, Humidity 96%, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8:05 am, Sunset 5:44 pm.

Cloudy with a high in the mid 30s. SW winds 5-10 mph with gusts to 20 in the afternoon.

Cloudy with a 20% chance of overnight snow. Low in the upper 20s. S winds 5 mph becoming SE overnight.

Although the Weather Channel seems determined never to mention the state of Michigan – they concentrate on the South or the East for the most part – unless California has something interesting going on – checking elsewhere it looks like Winter Storm Kassandra may give us a glancing blow as it passes to the south and east of us. I think we can definitely count on some snow. A couple of inches anyway. Off and on snow showers, doesn’t really look like any great amount, seems to be our future. You know how that goes, sometimes Lake Effect can kick in and add to the numbers, but we never know until and unless that happens.  But as for brightness – you have to find or make your own – cause Mother Nature isn’t in a sharing mood. The sun is definitely among the missing elements for us for the foreseeable future. Dang!

Monday, Jan. 23, 2023-SW Michigan-Not Much Chance For Sunshine Today

Monday, Jan. 23, 2023-SW Michigan-Not Much Chance For Sunshine Today

Currently 28 with an average wind from the SW of 3 mph. Feels like 28 degrees. Dew Point 28, Barometer 29.9, Humidity 99%, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8:06 am, Sunset 5:42 pm.

Mostly cloudy today with a high in the lower 30s. W winds 5-15 mph with gusts to 25.

Mostly cloudy with a 50% chance of snow showers possibly mixed with some freezing drizzle. Low in the upper 20s. W winds 10-20 mph with gusts to 30.

Well, I am still hoping for a brief glimpse of the sun today but those hopes are fading. And this was our one and only chance for about ever for that to happen. Not much ahead of us but clouds, cold, and snow. Not a pleasant weather forecast ahead except for those who truly enjoy winter. And I know that sort is out there. I find them strange, but hey…there they are anyway. This has been a rather lackluster winter for winter fans, but I have a feeling we’ll be catching up a bit from now on although this latest couple of storms has successfully skipped our area and have gone south and east. Happy me, but not so much those winter fans. Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll catch a share as the remainder of January and the month of February move along.

Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023-SW Michigan-Snow Is Back

Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023-SW Michigan-Snow Is Back

Currently 30 with an average wind from the S of 3 mph. Feels like 25 degrees. Dew Point 30, Barometer 29.8, Humidity 100%, Visibility 0.83 mi., Sunrise 8:07 am, Sunset 5:41 pm.

70% chance of snow today with a high in the mid 30s. Light winds.

Mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of evening snow showers then partly clearing overnight. Low in the upper 20s. N winds 5-10 mph.

Been snowing all morning. Not a heavy snow, but steady, so the snow is back for now. Still holding out a slim hope for a peek at the sun sometime tomorrow afternoon. Wouldn’t bet any money on it, but the hope is still here. After that? Not a chance. In fact, there is another storm system moving our way that should arrive sometime about Wednesday. We may or may not be in the bullseye with this one. As usual, it could go to the south of us or north of us – either way, we’d get less snow than if we were smack in the middle. At any rate, we will be getting snow from Wednesday right on for what seems at the moment like forever. Great for snow-lovers, not so much for others. I’m in the other group. I could do without any of it, but since I have no choice in the matter, I’ll take what comes and just have my snow shovel handy.
