An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018 South West Michigan – Getting Below Freezing Nights Now

Currently 34 with a WNW wind of 2 mph .Feels like 34. Dew Point 32, Humidity 93%, Barometer 30.25 & falling, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:07 am, Sunset 6:43 pm. Partly cloudy to cloudy today with a high of 52. SSW winds 5 -10 mph.

Cloudy tonight. Low 38. Light and variable winds.

Been waking to a lot of ice on the bird bath mornings now. Soon will be time to haul out the heated version. That will be the last of my getting ready for winter routine. The rest of it was finished this week. I figured with a handful of decent days with temperatures in the upper 40s or lower 50s, this was as good as it was going to get for outdoor work. Done and done!

Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018 South West Michigan – Lots Of Clouds And Cool Temps

Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018 South West Michigan – Lots Of Clouds And Cool Temps

Currently 29 with a N wind of 1 mph. Feels like 29. Dew Point 29, Humidity 100%, Barometer 30.44%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:06 am, Sunset 6:44 pm. Partly cloudy today. High 49. NNW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Clear to partly cloudy, low 29. Light and variable winds.

Not very pretty out there this morning. Mostly a gray sky  but with the promise of some improvement throughout the day. If even peeks of the sun are available, that’s good enough to keep the spirits up. I’ll take that. Looks like the next week will bring up daytime temps in the 40s and night time 30s. Not all that bad for the ending of October.

Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018 South West Michigan – A Bit Of Morning Sun To Cloudy Afternoon

Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018 South West Michigan – A Bit Of Morning Sun To Cloudy Afternoon

Currently 44 with a NW wind of 11 mph. Feels like 39. Dew Point 37, Humidity 75%, Barometer 30.20, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:05 am, Sunset 6:46 pm. A mix of sun and clouds this morning will become a cloudy afternoon. High 48. NW winds 10 – 15 mph.

Partly cloudy tonight, low 31. NNW winds 5 – 10 mph.

It’s a chilly morning and it doesn’t promise to warm up much the rest of the day. Definitely jacket weather now. Yesterday was a delight. Got up to 50 and it was warm enough to allow me to finish up my getting ready for winter tasks. So I’m good to go when the ugliness rolls around – as it will way too soon.

Monday, Oct. 22, 2018 South West Michigan – Welcome Sunshine Today

Monday, Oct. 22, 2018 South West Michigan – Welcome Sunshine Today

Currently 37 with a S wind of 5 mph. Feels like 33 degrees. Dew Point 33, Humidity 85%, Barometer 30.05 & falling, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:04 am, Sunset 6:47 pm. Partly cloudy today with a high of 57. SW winds 10 -15 mph.

Clear to partly cloudy. Low 38. W winds 10 – 15 mph.

Going to be a good day for doing outside getting ready for winter stuff. Or finishing up, if you’re that far into the seasonal routine. Not uncomfortable temperatures, no horrendous wind like we’ve been experiencing, and no rain in sight. How much better can that be? No sharp cold fronts pointed at us this week, and supposedly no rain in view until around next Sunday. Of course we all know how things can change, but it does seem like a good week shaping up.

Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018 South West Michigan – Cloudy, Chilly Sunday

Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018 South West Michigan – Cloudy, Chilly Sunday

Currently 37 with an average wind from the W of 8 mph. Feels like 32. Dew Point 28, Humidity 69%, Barometer 30.32 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:02 am, Sunset 6:49 pm. Mostly cloudy, could see a bit of sunshine off and on later, high 44. WSW winds 10 -15 mph.

Partly cloudy with a low of 34. SSW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Yesterday was bizarre. Didn’t get much rain in my backyard, barely .06″, but the sky was interesting. Bands of storms kept buzzing by…and I do mean fast…dropping very little rain here but lots of lightening and wind.  A goodly mix of cloud to ground and cloud to cloud variety. And then they were past, just that fast. I know other areas nearby got plenty of rain, but missed me for the most part.  Strange though to look to the east and see bits of sunshine and blue sky then to the west only to see a solid black, stormy sky. A picture that changed so fast it was amazing.  Like I said, it was weird. A good day to stay inside and watch it all unfold and fade away.

Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018 South West Michigan – First Mention Of Snow Showers

Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018 South West Michigan – First Mention Of Snow Showers

Currently 44 with a W wind of 11 mph. Feels like 40 degrees. Dew Point 39, Humidity 81%, Barometer 29.76, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:01am, Sunset 6:51pm. Windy. Overcast with a 50% chance of rain showers, some snow could mix in. High 47. NW winds 20 -30 mph.

Partly cloudy tonight with the possibility of a rain shower with wet snow mixed in. Low 31, NW winds 10 -20 mph.

Yikes! I purely do hate that ugly S word. And definitely do not like hearing that some snow could mix in with the rain late this afternoon or early evening. Seems awfully early, but that Cold Front swooping through is bringing that possibility. I am holding tight to the NOAA forecast of a slightly dryer, warmer winter for my area. That may or may not come about and even if it does, there will be, we know full well, plenty of bitter cold, ice and snow mixed in there. Michigan winter is not the tropics, let’s just put it that way :>)

Friday, Oct. 19, 2018 South West Michigan – Possible Rain Today/Tonight

Friday, Oct. 19, 2018 South West Michigan – Possible Rain Today/Tonight

Currently 46 with an average wind from the SSW of 12 mph. Feels like 41. Dew Point 38, Humidity 72%, Barometer 30.05 & falling, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:00am, Sunset 6:52pm. Partly cloudy this morning becoming cloudy with a 40% chance of rain. High 54. SW winds 15 – 25 mph.

Cloudy with a 50% chance of rain early, becoming partly cloudy. Low 41. W winds 15 – 25 mph.

Watching the national weather map and seeing a cold swatch covering most of the northeast of the nation. And of course, my state is nestled right in there. So we’re expecting cooler temperatures. One one hand, our humid, muggy weather has fled the scene, now it’s time to start the bundle up warding off the chill stuff. One plus? No mosquitoes :>)  But that Jet Stream is definitely ducking down into the states, bringing colder weather with it.

Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018 South West Michigan – Cold Night Brought First Frost

Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018 South West Michigan – Cold Night Brought First Frost

Currently 37 with a SSW wind of 8 mph. Feels like 31. Dew Point 29, Humidity 74%, Barometer 30.51 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:59 am, Sunset 6:54 pm. Sunny today with a high of 53. SW winds 10 -20 mph.

Clear overnight with a low of 43. SW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Got down to 27 last night in my backyard. First ice in the birdbath when I went out to refill it. I guess it’s time to get the heated bird bath rounded up and ready. Definitely jacket weather from now on. Good chance of rain coming Friday and Saturday and with the temperature expected to drop to below freezing Saturday night, I would hope folks are aware that road conditions early Sunday might not be what they’ve become used to. Happens every year – people seem to be shocked, and sometimes dead – by forgetting that ice and black ice can affect driving speeds. I always hope for the best when the weather becomes colder, but the best isn’t always in existence when it comes to some drivers on a road of less than ideal conditions…or even when the are ideal, for that matter. But right now we’re thinking of those taking off on what might be a slick early morning road.

Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018 South West Michigan – First Frost Of The Season Coming Tonight

Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018 South West Michigan – First Frost Of The Season Coming Tonight

Currently 41 with an average wind from the NW of 13 mph. Dew Point 30, Humidity 64%, Barometer 30.15 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise  7:58 am, Sunset 6:51 pm. Mostly cloudy with a slight chance of a rain shower. High 44. NW winds 15 – 25.

Partly cloudy tonight with widespread frost likely. Low 28. NW winds 10 -1 5 mph.

Freeze Warming in effect from 10 pm this evening through 10 am tomorrow.

Yup – here is comes. The first frost will successfully kill off anything growing this but it will give the color from the trees a boost. Good and bad, huh? Personally, I have a hard time seeing anything but the bad because this is only the beginning of the cold season – my least favorite part of living in Michigan. Alas…nothing I can do about it but bundle up and hope for an early Spring.

Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018 South West Michigan – Another Windy One

Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018 South West Michigan – Another Windy One

Currently 40 with an average SSW wind of 13 mph. Feels like 33. Dew Point 33, Humidity 75%, Barometer 30.10 & falling, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:57 am, Sunset 6:57 pm. Partly cloudy today. Windy. WSW winds 20 -30 mph. High 53.

Partly cloudy overnight with a slight chance of rain showers. Low 37. WNW winds 10 -20 mph.

Yesterday was bitter. That 20 -30 mph wind cut right through a jacket and there was no way not to feel chilled to the bone. Just a little taste of what’s to come before any of us care to think about it. It’s no wonder I hibernate for most of the season. I hate being cold worse than about anything. And it’s starting already. Geez…..
