An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

Sunshine to will make it feel warmer than it is – and it won’t be getting warm at all. At any rate, even with the temperature hovering barely over freezing, everyone will feel better for having seen the sun. We’ll take that as this year it does seem as if winter is settling in early and with a promise of not intending to be kind to us. We’ll see, but so far that’s the impression we’re getting.

Hazardous travel alerts were posted  this morning due to slick and icy roads. That will likely continue off and on as the snow and cold continues – especially on highway overpasses and interchanges. And so begins our Winter travel woes in Michigan. Annual misery that some people simply fail to accept and continue to travel at excessive speeds – thereby causing accidents in their wake where ever they go. It’s infuriating each and every year that some folks won’t – or can’t – adjust their brain to a changing weather conditions. Actually, when you get right down to it, even in summer weather with rain, fog, etc. conditions, it all comes down to speed being the killer. There are people who just should not be allowed behind a moving vehicle wheel.

As is the wont of humans, who love to tinker with clocks and calendars, today we have the ‘observed’ Veteran’s Day, thereby giving many folks the day off from work. And what else counts, right? Well, in this case, Veteran’s Day, whether we have one day or two, the object is to remember and honor all of those good people who have given service to our nation. In some cases, given their all for our country, for our freedoms. So here’s hoping that somewhere in your busy schedule you’ll take a moment to do it right, think about the brave military past, present and future who have fought for your right to live a lifestyle where you have a day off to do whatever it is you deem important.

Very chilly and rather drab here on this Veteran’s Day.

Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018 South West Michigan – Arctic Air Invading With Some Snow

Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018 South West Michigan – Arctic Air Invading With Some Snow

Currently 29 with a W wind of 15 mph. Feels like 18 degrees. Dew Point 25, Humidity 85%, Barometer 30.16 & rising, Visibility 0.5 mi., Sunrise 7:28 am, Sunset 5:22 pm. Cloudy today with a 90% chance of snow showers. High 33. WNW winds 10 -20 mph.

Cloudy. Low 26. SSW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Not at all like mid November with the blast of Arctic air sweeping down through the nation. Plenty of places with a hard freeze warning now. I had to finally plug in the heated ground bird bath. I reckon it will be plugged in and warm now until Spring.

Watching scenes of the wildfires in California. Looks like a version of what Hell must look like. I am heartbroken for the people – and the animals – trapped in that tinder dry location. I can’t, not for the life of me, imagine people not gathering up what’s important and leaving – LONG before being told to go. If there’s fire anywhere around, and I do mean anywhere around, I would think the logical and safe thing to do would be to simple get out of there. It’s not worth a single life to hang around and wait to see if the fire reaches you or not, or if you are given orders to leave…just get out. If there’s something there to come back to when it’s all over, good. If not, then it’s only stuff. As someone whose family did, indeed, lose everything in a fire once upon a time, I know it’s heartbreaking, but the fact that nobody dies is what’s important.

Friday, Nov. 9, 2018 South West Michigan – First 3/4″ Of Snow

Friday, Nov. 9, 2018 South West Michigan – First 3/4″ Of Snow

Currently 33 with a SE wind of 3 mph. Feels like 33 degrees. Dew Point 32, Humidity 36%, Barometer 30.04 & falling, Visibility 0.5 mi., Sunrise 7:26 am, Sunset 5:23 pm. 80% chance of snow showers today. High 36. SE wind 5 mph increasing to 10-20 mph.

60% chance of overnight snow showers. Low 24. W winds 15 – 25 mph.

Well, it’s here. The first almost inch of snow for the season. Seems awfully early, but such is life. Personally, I’ve got everything on the ready, even the yard stick I use out in the back to measure snow. Nothing more I can do now but hang in here and wait for Spring. It’s my favorite winter activity – waiting for spring.

Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018 South West Michigan – Getting Ready For Overnight Snow

Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018 South West Michigan – Getting Ready For Overnight Snow

Currently 37 with an average wind from the WNW of 6 mph. Feels like 32 degrees. Dew Point 26, Humidity 64%, Barometer 30.37 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:25 am, Sunset 5:25 pm. Cloudy with a few peeks at the sun later in the day. High in the upper30s. Light and variable winds.

Partly cloudy becoming cloudy with a 50% chance of snow. Low 30. Light and variable winds.

Well, I don’t see this on Weather Bug, but the Weather Channel has us down for a possible 3 – 5″ of snow tomorrow. I reckon the trick is to be prepared for which ever scenario comes about. I much prefer the one without the Winter Weather Advisory, but since I don’t have a say so in the whole thing, we’ll get what we get. At any rate, I’ll be parking my car in my minuscule garage tonight, just in case.

Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018 South West Michigan – Getting Ready For First Snow

Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018 South West Michigan – Getting Ready For First Snow

Currently 35 with a W  wind of 16 mph. Feels like 25. Dew Point 29, Humidity 78%, Barometer 29.97 & rising, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 7:24 am, Sunset 5:26 pm. Cloudy today with gust winds. W 20 – 30 mph with higher gusts up to 40. High of 39 degrees.

Cloudy to partly cloudy tonight with possible rain showers. Low 31. W winds 10 – 15 mph.

Well, it seems that by Thursday night/Friday morning we could end up with our first couple of inches of snow. Yikes! SO not happy about that. Alas…at least it waited until November to bring in the ugly stuff. Guess I can be grateful for that. And just think…only 5 months to March and MARCH COULD BE NICE.

Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018 South West Michigan – Windy, Rainy, Chilly

Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018 South West Michigan – Windy, Rainy, Chilly

Currently 47 with an average wind from the SW of 20 mph. Feels like 40 degrees. Dew Point 45, Humidity 94%, Barometer 29.45 & rising, Visibility 6 mi., Sunrise 7:23 am, Sunset 5:27 pm. 60% chance of rain showers with windy conditions. High 49. WSW winds 20 – 30 mph with higher gusts possible.

50% chance of rain showers early, then cloudy. Windy conditions all night. Low 36. WSW winds 15 – 25 mph with higher gusts possible.

Measured .73″ of rain in the gauge this morning and it’s a misty damp day going so far. Quite windy and bound to become even more so, it would seem. Should finish blowing off a lot more leaves by the time it’s finished. And I’m hearing that horrid S word start to crop up already. Might see some by the end of the week as that cold Canadian front comes swooping down where it doesn’t belong. And then by around next Tuesday, the worst stuff is started to be mentioned…that dread, dangerous frozen mix. So far it’s only a small percentage of that happening, but by then? Who knows? That’s the worst part of our winters, that ice mix stuff. Well, it’s the season, but I sure do wish it wasn’t.

Monday, Nov. 5, 2018 South West Michigan – Cold Front Coming This Week

Monday, Nov. 5, 2018 South West Michigan – Cold Front Coming This Week

Currently 45 with an average wind from the SW of 12 mph. Feels like 40 degrees. Dew Point 40, Humidity 83%, Barometer 29.95 & rising, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 7:21 am, Sunset 5:28 pm.  Cloudy today with a slight chance of rain showers. High 48. SSW winds 10 – 15 mph.

100% chance of overnight rain. Low 42. E winds 10 – 15 mph.

I understand a strong cold front is poised to drop down on us by the end of the week – possibly bringing snow showers. Ugh! I did haul out the heated bird bath this morning. It isn’t plugged in yet, but it’s filled and ready to be warm rather than frozen, which seems set on happening very soon. Seems like I just packed that away and brought out the ceramic bird bath. Where did the warm seasons go?
