An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

What a perfectly wonderful weekend of weather so far. Yesterday was fantastic. The first time  this season that I was able to bring out the cushions for the glider rocker to sit outside with a book and a cup of tea. A bit of a breeze ruffling along…sunshine galore. It was a day to dream about in the middle of winter. So far today, a bit more cloudy, but still a fantastic feel to the air. It’s finally offering up some summery weather to enjoy. And man, are we enjoying it! There’s a very good chance for some thunderstorms to rattle through later this afternoon, maybe tonight and tomorrow, but for now all is well.

A beautiful sky here as I’m watching the national weather map of the enormous cloud of dust drifts over the ocean from Africa heading to Puerto Rico, Bermuda and eventually the US gulf states. Fascinating. I’ll take our clear blue skies over the dusty looking overhead any day.

We’ll likely get rain late tomorrow, but today should be a dandy. We’re still so lucky her with no drastic, severe weather cropping up.

What a glorious first day of Summer here in my little backyard. Could not ask for a better one. The air is warm, crisp, the breeze is light, the sun is shining. Makes you glad all over to be able to get out and about in a day like this. Fingers crossed that, now we have Summer finally with us, the season will get up to speed and be a proper Summer. Today is a dandy start!

Looks as if tomorrow might be our only day for goodness knows how long without rain. Really. A day without rain. I guess at this point I’ll believe it when I see it. Right now it’s raining and it’s chilly. Not happy about the way this month of June is going…and it’s going fast. We’re past mid-way and it still hasn’t turned into a proper month of June.

Yesterday we did see some sunshine among the clouds. Not so much today. In fact, none. It appears as if Friday might be a day without rain. The only one coming up. To say the gloomy days are getting to be a bit tiresome would be an understatement.

Tuesday, June 18, 2019-South West Michigan – Will It Ever Warm Up?

My son has a lovely, inviting pool…but so far there hasn’t been a single day where it’s warm enough to be interested in swimming. This is such an unusual summer so far. And that’s not such a good thing. Where is the warmth? And the rain a few days, one day clear, rain a few more days pattern continues. Today we have a clear one. Not warm, but not raining either. That seems to be the best we can do.

Monday, June 17, 2019-South West Michigan-Lucky To Be Dodging Wicked Storms

Monday, June 17, 2019-South West Michigan-Lucky To Be Dodging Wicked Storms

Currently 57 with an average wind from the ENE wind of 8 mph. Feels like 55 degrees. Dew Point 52, Humidity 82%, Barometer 30.01 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:03am, Sunset 9:24pm.  Cloudy today with a high of 72. E winds 5-10 mph.

Cloudy overnight, low 58. Light and variable winds.

Heard this morning there were something like 450 storms reported yesterday. That’s crazy. They were all to the south of us through states like Indiana and Ohio. Storms, severe storms, tornadoes…it just doesn’t seem to want to quit. We really are lucky in that we have had nothing like that in SW Michigan. They’re still facing more possibilities today and we remain only dealing with cool temperatures and chilly rains. We might not like that, but I know we’d like those storms even less.

The Cottonwood trees are generously sharing seeds with everyone right now. It’s looking like snow alongside driveways and streets. The air continues to look like batches of snowflakes floating by the windows. Won’t last long and soon there will be yet another round of some other tree throwing out hope for future life. Those with allergies aren’t all that thrilled with it all, but most simply put up with it as an annual assault on the senses by Mother Nature, doing her thing.

Sunday, June 16, 2019-South West Michigan-Small Peeks Of Off And On Sun

Currently 60 with an average wind from the ENE of 11 mph. Feels like 58 degrees. Dew Point 50, Humidity 68%, Barometer 29.85 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:03 am, Sunset 9:24 pm. Generally cloudy with a slight chance of rain showers. High 67. E winds 10 -15 mph.

Cloudy overnight. Low 55. ENE winds 5 – 10 mph.

The sun is trying hard to break through every so often from the overcast sky, even succeeding for a minute or two. Mostly the clouds are winning, even tossing in a few light, stray raindrops to boast of its success. So I suspect the few rays of sun that manage to beat their way through will be appreciated all the more for the effort.

Well, mid June and we’re still not warming up to where we would like to be. Remaining damp and cool. Not the early Summer we would like to be having.

I’ll tell you, if you haven’t seen the site: https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-94.81,49.51,324  you really should go there and check out the air currents swirling around this planet of ours. It’s utterly fascinating! It’s one of the sites I check on every morning.

Friday, June 14, 2019-South West Michigan- Some Clouds, Some Sun

Friday, June 14, 2019-South West Michigan- Some Clouds, Some Sun

Currently 60 with an average wind from the SW of 8 mph. Feels like 59 degrees. Dew Point 45, Humidity 59%, Barometer 30.01 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:03 am, Sunset 9:23 pm. Partly sunny morning with increasing afternoon clouds. High 75. SW winds 15 -25.

Partly cloudy becoming cloudy with a 40% chance of overnight rain. Low 40. SW winds 15 – 25 mph.

Still rather chilly out there this morning, but it’s dry. Sounds like it won’t be by tomorrow morning but alas…all we can do is enjoy this one. Fact is, the entire weekend sounds like a washout but there’s always hope that won’t happen.

On another note, I turned my heat on again last night. Seriously, this Spring and Summer (Okay, I know it doesn’t officially start yet but everyone knows Summer is June, July and August) has been chilly and wet. I can’t ever remember turning my heat on this late in the season, but on the other hand, I detest being cold, so all I can do is be thankful I can eliminate that discomfort. One day at a time, I guess.
