An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021-SW Michigan-Freezing Fog To Deal With

Currently 32 with a calm average wind from the SW. Feels like 32 degrees. Dew Point 32, Barometer 29.99, Humidity 100%, Visibility 1.5 mi., Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:21 pm.

30% chance of light freezing drizzle. Patchy fog. High mid 30s. NW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Cloudy with areas of fog and freezing fog overnight. How in the upper 20s. NW winds around 5 mph.

Just great. We can’t seem to get it  right at all. We don’t get snow, we get ice or sleet or in today’s case, freezing fog. If we’re going to have winter, just throw us the snow and stop playing goofy games, Mother Nature. Winter is bad enough with snow, having to deal with the rest of the miserable stuff is simply overkill. And it appears we can’t escape it for awhile. But…in so saying it does look as if we’re going to be basically free of snow for the next 10 days or so. Well, as of now. This freezing fog wasn’t in the picture either even yesterday. So…can things change and we dumped on? Most certainly. Fingers crossed we won’t, but still…

Monday, Jan. 4, 2021-SW Michigan-Clouds, Fog, Maybe Overnight Snow

Monday, Jan. 4, 2021-SW Michigan-Clouds, Fog, Maybe Overnight Snow

Currently 29 with an average wind from the SSE of 5 mph. Feels like 29 degrees. Dew Point 29, Barometer 29.99, Humidity 100%, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8;14 am, Sunset 5:20 pm.

Cloudy with a 50% chance of overnight snow showers. Low in the upper 20s. SW winds 5 – 10 mph with gusts to 20 becoming W during the night.

Not much to say about today. Another sunless, gray day. A bit of fog tossed in for fun. Might get a bit of overnight snow. Nothing much that looks drastic in tap for the week – so far. Let’s hope that continues. We don’t really need any drastic winter weather here. Just the run of the mill stuff is bad enough.

Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021-SW Michigan-Another Gloomy Winter Day

Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021-SW Michigan-Another Gloomy Winter Day

Currently 29 with an average wind from the WNW of 4 mph. Feels like 25 degrees. Dew Point 29, Barometer 29.91, Humidity 100%, Visibility 4 mi., Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:19 pm.

Mostly cloudy with a 40% chance of snow showers until about midday. Patchy fog. High in the mid 30s. Light winds.

Mostly cloudy overnight with patchy fog. Low in the mid 20s. SW winds around 10 mph.

Well, tomorrow sounds cheerier. Might even see a peek at the sun now and again. I’m already tired of the gloomy  days of Winter. Days like this I’d as soon leave the blinds closed so I can at least pretend it’s a pretty day outside, even when, in fact, it’s ugly and gray. Does seem to be a decent week coming at us with no predicted precipitation. We all know how fast that can change, but my hopes are high they won’t.  We’ll see how it goes. I can take the cold long as I can see some bright blue sky, a tiny bit of sunshine now and again.

Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021-SW Michigan-Over Night Snow, Now Fog

Currently 29 with an average wind from the NNW of 2 mph. Feels like 29 degrees. Dew Point 29, Barometer 30.07, Humidity 100%, Visibility 1.5 mi., Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:19 pm

Mostly cloudy overnight with a 40% chance of snow. Low in the lower 20s. Light winds.

There is now 6″ of snow on the ground now in my little backyard. We did seem to luck out and miss the ice that could have covered everything this morning. Instead we seem to have received mostly snow. And now we have fog to contend with, too. From now until spring, I fear the dreary colorless scene is what we’re going to be dealing with. I’m already missing the greens, the colors of spring and summer. They’ll come, but right now it seems like it’s forever away.

Winter Weather Advisory in effect from noon today through Saturday morning.

A calm morning so far, but expecting a mess in the afternoon and overnight. Chances are the drive in to work for those who will find that necessary tomorrow morning might be a problem. Fingers crossed for safe driving for everyone through this storm system. Not a really wonderful way to begin a brand new year, but hopefully things will improve…goodness knows, things have to improve all the way around from the year we just left in our rear view window.

Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020-SW Michigan-Hoping For A Better Year

Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020-SW Michigan-Hoping For A Better Year

Currently 28 with an average wind from the SSW of 1 mph. Feels like 28 degrees. Dew Point 22, Barometer 30.22, Humidity 77%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:17 pm.

Cloudy with a high in the lower 30s. SW winds around 10 mph.

Mostly cloudy overnight with a low 15-20. Light winds.

Looking forward to a new year and not so much for the weather predicted to usher it in. Winter Weather Advisory – again – indicates an Wintry Mix…more ice than snow. This is not good news. Hoping somehow the worst of it slides off to the south of us and leaves us alone with just snow. It’s going to be a wait and see affair…sort of like the coming year. Hope for the best is all we can do.

Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2020-SW Michigan-5″ Of Heavy Wet Overnight Snow

Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2020-SW Michigan-5″ Of Heavy Wet Overnight Snow

Currently 33 with a calm average wind from the SSE. Feels like 33 degrees. Dew Point 33, Barometer 29.77, Humidity 100%, Visibility 0.5 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:17 pm.

Winter Weather Advisory continues to 1:00 pm today.

90% chance of snow possibly mixed with freezing rain for the rest of the day. High in the upper 30s. SW winds 10 -15 mph becoming W in the afternoon with gusts to 30.

Cloudy tonight with a low in the lower 20s. W winds 5 – 15 mph with gusts to 25.

Measured 5″ of heavy wet snow in my little back yard, but I suspect it was more like 6 originally. It’s packing down already -VERY heavy. Just trying to clear even a small patch to toss my bird and critter food out to was a chore. A carefully done chore, but none-the-less…

Not looking forward to this coming Friday because it sounds as if more hideous icy weather is coming at us then. Just in time to screw up New Year’s Day.

Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020-SW Michigan-Winter Weather Advisory In Effect – Again

Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020-SW Michigan-Winter Weather Advisory In Effect – Again

Currently the temperature is 23 with a calm wind from the WNW. Feels like 23 degrees. Dew Point 17, Barometer 30.49, Humidity 79%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:16 pm.

100% chance of overnight snow in the evening then possibly mixed with freezing rain & sleet. Snow and sleet accumulation 3-5″. Low in the upper 20s. S winds 5 – 15 mph with gusts to 30.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10:00 pm tonight through 1:00 pm Wednesday. Could be a royal mess on the roads by morning. Scary. And then it does sound as if a second ice storm will be slamming into us on Friday. Swell…just when folks will want to be spending New Year’s Day dinner with family. You can count on the end of December and the month of January to bring all sorts of interesting – but very unlikable weather. And it seems as if these two storms will be spreading the woe around the country, too. Hang in there people, Spring is right around the corner. Granted, that corner seems a long way off right now, but we’ll get there.

Monday, Dec. 28, 2020-SW Michigan-Cloudy And Colorless

Monday, Dec. 28, 2020-SW Michigan-Cloudy And Colorless

Currently 29 with an average wind from the WSW of 4 mph. Feels like 25 degrees. Dew point 26, Barometer 30.09, Humidity 86%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:15 pm.

Cloudy with a 20% chance of morning snow showers until about midday then partly cloudy afternoon. High in the low 30s. NW winds 10-15 mph with gusts to 25.

Mostly cloudy becoming partly cloudy overnight. Low 15-20. NW winds 5 – 15 mph.

Tis the season of colorless mornings. Gray ground, gray sky and the only thing differentiating between them are skeletal tree branches reaching up for…what? They sure aren’t going to find any warmth and precious little sunshine. But there they are stretching upward into the grayness.

A couple of eventless days leading into an end of the week snow – just like last week. So anyone venturing out to celebrate the New Year will likely be finding slick roads – just like last week. Ah, the joys of living in a northern state.
