An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.
Sunday, August 26, 2018 South West Michigan – Dense Fog Morning

Sunday, August 26, 2018 South West Michigan – Dense Fog Morning

Currently 71 with fog and a WSW wind of 1 mph. Feels like 71 degrees, Dew Point 70, Humidity 98%, Barometer 30.01 & rising, Visibility 1.4 mi, Sunrise 6:59 am, Sunset 8:26 pm. Morning for with a partly cloudy afternoon. High around 89. SW winds 5 -10 mph.

50% chance of overnight thunderstorms. Low 73. SSW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Quite foggy this morning and the air is so close with the dew point and barometer numbers being so high. The air is more water than anything else – or at least it seems like it. The fog should clear out eventually, but the humidity and the heat will remain for today and probably tomorrow.

Saturday, August 25, 2018 South West Michigan – Nothing But Clouds, Possible Rain, Today

Saturday, August 25, 2018 South West Michigan – Nothing But Clouds, Possible Rain, Today

Currently 66 with a S wind of 11 mph. Feels like 66 degrees. Dew Point 65, Humidity 97%, Barometer 29.92 & falling, Visibility 8 mi, Sunrise 6:58 am, Sunset 8:28 pm. 40% chance of scattered thunderstorms. High 78. SW winds 10 -20 mph.

Some overnight clouds. Areas of fog. Low 68. SW winds 5 – 10 mph.

We did get .13″ of overnight rain. Woke to thunder but precious little rain to go along with it even though there was a weather alert in place for a possible storm. As has been the case, it seems to have gone someplace else. Sunday through Tuesday the heat returns with the possibility of rain Monday and Tuesday and by Wednesday, it should have all cleared out, leaving sunshine and comfortable temperatures. Not the best weekend weather, but not much anyone can do about that.

Friday, August 24, 2018 South West Michigan – Might Be Some Rain Moving In Over Next Few Days

Friday, August 24, 2018 South West Michigan – Might Be Some Rain Moving In Over Next Few Days

Currently 65 with a S wind of 9 mph. Feels like 65 degrees, Dew Point 55, Humidity 70%, Barometer 30.06 & rising, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 6:57 am, Sunset 8:30 pm. Partly cloudy to cloudy with a 40% chance of afternoon rain. High 77. S winds 10 – 20 mph.

70% chance of light rain with scattered thunderstorms popping up. Low 63. SSE winds 10 – 15 mph.

There appears to be a chance for some rain over the next 4 or 5 days. Doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to be getting any, but the opportunity is hanging out there. We could use some. We’ll see.

Watching the ‘preparation’ for Hurricane Lane in Hawaii and I’m underwhelmed by it all. Are those people so blase that nothing fazes them or simply…well, simple? Beyond clearing out the grocery stores and – yes, they really were doing this – busy building a 3 ft. ‘berm’ of loose sand along the beach – I don’t see much going on. Umbrellas still flapping in the wind, no windows bordered up, people wandering around with umbrellas and a few standing out on cliff side areas with 20 ft. waves dashing up at them. Probably the most nonchalant place I’ve ever seen in my many years of hurricane watching. Sort of harkens back to New Orleans where they were so unprepared and allowed a wingnut to herd thousands of them into a sports arena with no toilet facilities, no food, no water, no…well, nothing. Or they all simply stayed in homes that ended up totally flooded and then – again, thousands of them – had to be rescued. And they all expected things to go well. What is it about these places? Hawaii – islands in the middle of an ocean. New Orleans, a bowl, virtually under sea level depending on aged levies to save them. Doesn’t anyone think ahead anymore? I don’t know…I guess I expect more sense from people. Silly me.

Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018 South West Michigan – Cool Morning, Warming Up Later

Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018 South West Michigan – Cool Morning, Warming Up Later

Currently 61 with a SW wind of 3 mph. Feels like 61. Dew Point 59, Humidity 95%, Barometer 30.09 & rising, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 6:56 am, Sunset 8:51 pm. Sunny today with a high near 80. WSW winds 10 -20 mph.

Clear overnight skies, low 57. SSW winds 5 – 10 mph.

A chilly morning but with the sky clear and the sun shining, it should warm up nicely today. Nights, dropping down into the 50 degree range are much better for sleeping – without the A/C, or lately not even the need for a fan. So there is something good there. I doubt our temperatures will hit a whole lot of high numbers anymore this season, although in saying that, I see that Sunday could bring us briefly up close to 90. That will start dropping by Monday and we’ll be back into the 70s the rest of the  week. I guess a flare up or two is to be expected, but for a long term bout of steamy weather now? Now very likely again until next year.

You can tell the weather is changing as the bees are becoming more aggressive out around the Humming Bird feeder. I’ve seen them chase the little birds away and they’ve done a pretty fair job on keeping me at bay, too. Happens every year about this time.

Wednesday, August 22, 2018 South West Michigan – Some Sun, Some Clouds

Wednesday, August 22, 2018 South West Michigan – Some Sun, Some Clouds

Currently 61 with a NW wind of 11 mph. Feels like 60 degrees. Dew Point 53. Humidity 74%, Barometer 30.04, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 6:55 am, Sunset 8:33 pm.  Sunny to partly cloudy with a high of 76. NW winds 10 -20 mph.

Low tonight 55.

Feels so cool this morning compared to what we’ve experienced lately that a hint of fall hangs in the air. I’m not happy about that. Yes, the cool air is rather refreshing, but no…any suggestion of the seasons to come isn’t welcome in my world. Not to me. So I’m happy to see that next week the heat will be returning. I may be one of the only ones standing here cheering that news, but I sure am doing just that. The longer I can hang on to summer the better.

Tuesday, August 21, 2018 South West Michigan -Finally Got Some Rain

Tuesday, August 21, 2018 South West Michigan -Finally Got Some Rain

Currently 67 with a N wind of 7 mph. Feels like 67 degrees. Dew Point 66, Humidity 96%, Barometer 29.75 & falling, Visibility 8 mi, Sunrise 6:54 am, Sunset 8:35 pm. 50% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. High 756. N winds 10 -20 mph.

20% chance of overnight rain. Low 55.

We finally did get some rain.  .61″ of it, as a matter of fact. It was a delight to wake up about 3:00 this morning to the sound and smell of rain. Been awhile. Things do look a bit perkier, greener outside this morning. It would be lovely if today was an all day rain, but I think we’ll only be getting light showers. We’ll take whatever we get.

Monday, Aug. 20, 2018 South West Michigan – Best Bet Yet For Soaking Rain On Way

Monday, Aug. 20, 2018 South West Michigan – Best Bet Yet For Soaking Rain On Way

Currently 69 with an ESE wind of 8 mph. Feels like 69 degrees. Dew Point 64, Humidity 85%, Barometer 29.99 & rising, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 6:53 am, Sunset 8:36 pm. Morning mix of sun and clouds will become all clouds by afternoon. High 82. ESE winds 10 – 15 mph.

100% chance of overnight showers and thunderstorms. Low 66. ESE winds 10 -15 mph.

Okay – fingers really crossed for tonight’s rain to materialize. It looks promising but then so many forecasts have resulting in nothing more than a handful of raindrops. Going to be a whole lot of folks grateful to be woken up by the sound of thunder tonight – if it happens.

Sunday, August 19, 2018 South West Michigan – Lots Of Clouds, No Rain

Sunday, August 19, 2018 South West Michigan – Lots Of Clouds, No Rain

Currently 68 with a SE wind of 4 mph. Feels like 68. Dew Point 68, Humidity 99%, Barometer 30.01 & rising, Visibility 4 mi, Sunrise 6:51 am, Sunset 8:38 pm. 40% chance of scattered afternoon thunderstorms. High 81. Light and variable winds.

A few overnight clouds, low 62. Light and variable winds.

Yesterday’s sky brought us tons of clouds, but only a trace of rain. This seems to be the way it goes here this year. Still waiting for a nice day long, steady, gentle rain. Been a long, long time since we were lucky enough to get one of those. Or any goodly amount of rain in any form, come to think of it.

Saturday, August 18, 2018 South West Michigan – Finally Got A Bit Of Rain

Saturday, August 18, 2018 South West Michigan – Finally Got A Bit Of Rain

Currently 67 with a N wind of 6 mph. Feels like 67 degrees. Dew Point 65, Humidity 94%, Barometer 29.99 & rising, Visibility 10 mi, Sunrise 6:51, Sunset 8:39 pm. Partly cloudy with the chance of a stray shower or thunderstorm possible. High 85. NE winds 5 -10 mph.

Partly cloudy overnight, low 64. Light and variable winds.

Okay, so one of those stray showers finally wandered over in our direction. We did get .15″ of rain yesterday, which I know isn’t much, but it’s sure more than we’ve been getting. The chance for more is always out there lately but alas…so rarely does it ever materialize. We’re grateful for what we got yesterday. Our abnormally dry conditions continue here.

Friday, August 17, 2018 South West Michigan – Abnormal Dry Conditions Continue

Friday, August 17, 2018 South West Michigan – Abnormal Dry Conditions Continue

Currently 70 with a NNE wind of 1 mph. Feels like 70 degrees. Dew Point 70, Humidity 100%, Barometer 29.93 & rising, Visibility 6 mi, Sunrise 6:49 am, Sunset 8:41pm. Partly to mostly cloudy with a 40% chance of thunderstorms. High 84. NE winds  5 – 10 mph.

Same thing for tonight with a low of 64. NNE winds 5 – 10 mph.

All of those  chances for a ‘stray’ shower followed suit and wandered far enough away from my area of the state that dry continues to be the word here. There are places in Michigan getting an occasional rain, but certainly not here in SW Michigan. Abnormal Dry seems to be verging on serious Drought and it isn’t good. And today is so humid you could almost wring the moisture out of the air – but it’s not helping our dry vegetation. Not one bit. We simply need rain!
