An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.
Friday, March 15, 2019-South West Michigan-Rain/Snow Mix Today And Tonight

Friday, March 15, 2019-South West Michigan-Rain/Snow Mix Today And Tonight

Currently 37 with a WSW wind of 14 mph making it feel like 28 degrees. Dew Point 36, Barometer 29.70 & rising, Humidity 98%, Visibility 2 mi., Sunrise 7:55 am, Sunset 7:48 pm. 100% chance of rain/snow mix this morning transitioning to all snow showers in the afternoon. Hi. mid 30s. W winds 10 -20 mph.

50% chance of snow showers, low 27. WNW winds 10 -20 mph.

Well, yesterday was interesting. A bit of sun, rain, wind…and it left us with nothing but a gloomy overcast sky and the chance of more snow showers. Swell. Just what we need all right. Because my tiny backyard is pretty much all shade, I still have almost an inch of snow ground cover over most of it. Along with a lot of ice on the path I use to get out to feed the critters every morning. I really need that to be gone. Hopefully by June or so. Enough winter already!

Thursday, March 14, 2019-South West Michigan-Pause Before Rain Comes

Thursday, March 14, 2019-South West Michigan-Pause Before Rain Comes

Currently 53 with a SSE wind of 15 mph making it feel like 49 degrees. Dew Point 50, Barometer 29.56 & falling, Humidity 87%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:56 am, Sunset 7:47 pm. Partly cloudy to cloudy with an 80% chance of rain. Some thunder possible. High 61. S winds 15 – 25 mph.

Cloudy with a 60% chance of rain. Thunder possible. Low 38. SW winds 15 – 25 mph with gusts to 40 possible.

Watching, this morning one of my favorites critters, a small black squirrel, do his ‘spy’ routine. I put the unsalted nuts and seeds out there & the critters all come running. All but this little guy. He starts – always – way off in the distance, and sneaks from tree to tree to shrub…pausing at every one to take a look ahead to see if…I don’t know…the coast is somehow his idea of clear? At any rate, it takes him so long to approach the kitchen area, he’s lucky to get anything left. Every single day. He’s a hoot.

Waiting for the rain to start this afternoon along with some wind. There is a wind advisory in effect until late today. I imagine this is part of Winter Storm Ulmer who is raising havoc across the country with a vengeance. I reckon we’re lucky to be only getting what is coming our way.

Wednesday, March 13, 2019-South West Michigan-Morning Rain

Wednesday, March 13, 2019-South West Michigan-Morning Rain

Currently 37 with an average wind from the S of 11 mph making it feel like 30 degrees. Dew Point 35, Barometer 29.99 & falling, Humidity 92%, Visibility 4 mi., Sunrise 7:57 am, Sunset 7:45 pm. 60% chance of morning rain, cloudy afternoon skies. High 48. S winds 10 -15 mph.

50% chance of overnight rain. Some thunder likely. Low 44. SE winds 10 -20 mph.

Feeling lucky this morning watching Winter Storm Ulmer beginning to crank up in the midwest. Pretty sure we won’t get much of anything from this one…maybe rain and some wind on Thursday, but nothing at all of what they’re going to be dealing with in the middle of the country. Looks like one ugly blizzard brewing. Sorry for them, happy for us. I just hope folks are smart enough to stay off the roads and let that one fly by. This one, I think, is going to be a true blizzard – not something seen every winter storm that’s blown across the nation this year.

Tuesday, March 12, 2019-South West Michigan-Glorious Sunshine Today

Tuesday, March 12, 2019-South West Michigan-Glorious Sunshine Today

Currently 31 with an average wind from the SW of 9 mph making it feel like 23 degrees. Dew Point 22, BArometer 30.37 & falling, Humidity 68%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:59 am, Sunset 7:44 pm. Sunny today, high 45. SW winds 5 – 10 mph.

60% chance of overnight rain, low 35. S winds 5-10 mph.

Going to lose a lot of the ground snow cover now. Sunshine today, rain tonight…nice temperatures the rest of the week. Oh yeah…finally should lose all but the remainders of the mountains left over from snow plowing. We are more than ready to see the ground again. Even if it means a muddy clean up ahead, we’ll deal with it ’cause we’re sure tired of dealing with snow. Things are looking up.

Monday, March 11, 2019 South West Michigan – Calm, Partly Cloudy Today

Monday, March 11, 2019 South West Michigan – Calm, Partly Cloudy Today

Currently 27 with an average wind of 14 mph making it feel like 16 degrees. Dew Point 18, Barometer 30.29 & rising, Humidity 69%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:01 am, Sunset 7:43 pm. Partly cloudy today with a high of 32. W winds 10 -20 mph.

Partly cloudy overnight with a low near 15. W winds 10 -15 mph.

Nothing much going on today. They are, however, talking about yet another wind storm roaring across the country somewhere around Thursday. Gives us some time to batten down the hatches again…at least those that didn’t blow away during the last two wind storms. What fun.

Sunday, March 10, 2019-South West Michigan-High Wind Alert All Day Long

Sunday, March 10, 2019-South West Michigan-High Wind Alert All Day Long

Currently 34 with an average wind from the WSW of 22 mph making it feel like 22 degrees. Dew Point 30, Barometer 29.61 & rising, Humidity 85%, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8:03, Sunset 7:42 pm. Cloudy today with a 30% chance of snow showers. High in the mid 30s. Windy. WSW 25-35 with gusts to 40 mph.

Cloudy tonight, low 24. Gusty winds diminishing after midnight.  W winds 20-30 mph with gusts to around 40 mph.

Another wind wrap weather system breezing by. This one not as bad as the last, but that’s a fairly strong wind whipping around out there. And I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m tired. Feels like I got up about an hour earlier than I wanted to. And I hate getting up in the dark. Just when it’s starting to be okay, waking up and seeing light outside the window, they mess around with the time and slam mornings right back into the dark. Pitiful.

Saturday, March 9, 2019-South West Michigan-Brink Of Yet Another Disruptive Time Change

Saturday, March 9, 2019-South West Michigan-Brink Of Yet Another Disruptive Time Change

Currently 25 with an E wind of 9 mph making it feel like 16 degrees. Dew Point 16, Barometer 30.15 & falling, Humidity 69%, Visibility 7 mi., Sunrise 7:04 am, Sunset 6:41 pm. Partly cloudy becoming cloudy with an 80% chance of rain. High 34. Windy! SW winds 20 -30 mph.

Same tonight with a 100% chance of rain with wind gust up to 40 mph possible. Low 34.

So, not only are we looking at another wind storm – this one at least with rain rather than snow – but here we are set to run around changing all the clocks to accommodate yet another goofy, disruptive time change. Be sure to be a good little puppet and change them all. You do know that if our elected politicians could stop playing war games among themselves and actually get down to working, they could perhaps come together and put a stop to this unwanted, unnecessary tinkering around with time twice a year. Just pick one. Who cares which one – just pick one and stick with it.

Friday, March 8, 2019 South West Michigan – Welcome Sunshine Today

Friday, March 8, 2019 South West Michigan – Welcome Sunshine Today

Currently 8 with a NE wind of 2 mph. Feels like 8 degrees. Dew Point 4, Barometer 30.28, Humidity 84%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:06 am, Sunset 6:39.  Mostly sunny today with a high of 35. Light and variable winds.

Clear overnight skies. Low 18. Light and variable winds.

Been a long time since I’ve been able to report a day of mostly sunny skies – and in truth, that’s not what’s happening out there so far. I’d say it’s about half and half sun and clouds, but the hope is there. Plus the knowledge that eventually I’ll be able to say sunny and warm…that’s what’s holding out there like the proverbial carrot on the stick. Keeping us moving along. We’ll get there.

Thursday, March 7, 2019-South West Michigan-No Warm Up Yet

Thursday, March 7, 2019-South West Michigan-No Warm Up Yet

Currently 16 with a WNW wind of 2 mph. Feels like 16 degrees. Dew Point 9, Barometer 30.40 & rising, Humidity 74%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:08 am, Sunset 6:38 pm. Cloudy with possible snow flurries or showers early. High 27. WNW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Cloudy overnight with a low of 11. Light and variable winds.

Well, tomorrow might get up as high as 35 degrees, but nothing close to that today. Still cold, still nothing out there but white to look at. It will gradually warm up – it has to eventually. In the meantime, I seem to be chilled all the time. It may take until about June to warm up, I’m thinking. Maybe July.

Wednesday, March 6, 2019-South West Michigan-Brief Peeks Of Sun, Cold

Currently 15 with a WSW wind of 9 mph making it feel like 4 degrees. Dew Point 6, Barometer 30.31 & rising, Humidity 66%, Visibility 8 mi., Sunrise 7:00 am, Sunset 6:37 pm. Mostly cloudy with possible snow flurries. High around 20. WSW winds 10 -20 mph.

Cloudy to partially clear with possible snow flurries overnight. Low 9. WNW winds 5 – 10 mph.

At the moment stray snowflakes are drifting around. Have no idea if they plan to band together and add up to anything, just the stray ones are irritating enough for now.

Heartbreaking news from Alabama and Georgia about the recent tornado damage. So many people lost, so many families in pain. I’ll tell you, I’d trade places living in the south rather than the north any time – but – and this is the important part – the first thing, the very first thing I’d do if I moved down there would be to build a tornado shelter. Immediately. Having one might well have saved some – or perhaps all of the lives. I can’t imagine not investing in a shelter. Even if it was a large hole in the ground lined with cement blocks or something, with a cover that could be pulled down and secured from overhead. Not all that fancy and what ever the cost, it would be worth it in my mind. No way could I live down south without the comfort, the security of having a shelter available.
