An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

Monday, Jan. 25, 2021-SW Michigan-Here Comes Winter Storm Nathaniel

Currently 26 with an average wind from the N of 3 mph. Feels like 26 degrees. Dew Point 24, Barometer 30.07, Humidity 91%, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8:04 am, Sunset 5:45 pm.

Winter Storm Advisory in effect until Tuesday 4:00 pm. 2-4″ of snow possible.

Mostly cloudy this morning becoming cloudy. High around 30. NE winds 10 mph becoming 10-15 in the afternoon.

90% chance of snow. 2-3″ expected overnight. Low in the lower 20s. NE winds 10-20mph.

I guess we’re not going to escape Winter Storm Nathaniel. Expected to come visiting overnight and through most of tomorrow. I reckon we’re about due. We’ve been lucky to duck out on most of what’s swept across the country up to this point. Not all of Michigan has, as the upper part of Michigan seems to be hit by a lot of what winter stands for where we here in the lower SW part manage to sneak through mostly unscathed. This time we’re going to get scathed. Or whatever. Could end up with 4 or 5″ by the time it’s over and done. Then again, we might not. That’s the fun of weather watching. Never really know for sure until it hits and passes on what we’re left with. All I know for sure is I’m heading out to do errands early this morning, get it all over with and home to be a weather watcher from safe inside my little nest. Be safe out there, no matter what we get.

Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021-SW Michigan-Dreary Colorless Sky

Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021-SW Michigan-Dreary Colorless Sky

Currently 24 with an average wind from the E of 4 mph. Feels like 19 degrees. Dew Point 23, Barometer 30.32, Humidity 97%, Visibility 1.3 mi., Sunrise 8:05 am, sunset 5:44 pm.

90% chance of snow today. Not expected any great accumulation.High around 30. SE winds 5 -10 mph.

Mostly cloudy overnight with a low in the lower 20s. Light winds.

A light snow falling with a dull, dreary sky overhead this morning. I guess Winter Storm Nathaniel is the dude we’re dealing with the week, but so far, it doesn’t look as if he’s going to leave any great remembrance of his passing for us here in SW Michigan. Sounds like another near miss. I’m all for that. The more missing we do regarding these winter storms, the nicer it is – and the closer we get to Spring. You recall Spring? When actual color starts to appear again. Our scene isn’t all just black, gray and white? Big sigh…I sure do. Can’t wait.

Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021-SW Michigan-Sunshine Today, Snow Tomorrow

Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021-SW Michigan-Sunshine Today, Snow Tomorrow

Currently 27 with an average wind from the SSW of 4 mph. Feels like 27 degrees. Dew Point 16, Barometer 30.32, Humidity 64%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:06 am, Sunset 5:42 pm.

Partly sunny with a high in the upper 20s. W winds 10 mph.

Cloudy with a 60% chance of overnight snow showers. Low in the lower 20s. Light winds becoming SE 10 mph.

Seeing the sunshine today makes it feel much nicer than the 27 degrees it actually is. Even the thought of snow moving in tonight and tomorrow doesn’t seem to matter all that much with the happy feeling sunshine brings to us. And looking ahead, I’m surprised to see our temperatures hovering around the lower 30 degree mark this coming week. Could be SO much worse than what we’re experiencing.  A little snow now and then a little drop in temperatures occasionally. So far, so good with this winter. Of course we still have the month of February to get through and that’s usually the worst winter month, but we can’t find much to complain about what we’ve been dealt thus far.

Friday, Jan. 22, 2021-SW Michigan-A Little Snow Today, More Sunday

Friday, Jan. 22, 2021-SW Michigan-A Little Snow Today, More Sunday

Currently 19 with an average wind from the WSW of 5 mph. feels like 12 degrees. Dew Point 15, Barometer 29.54, Humidity 83%, Visibility 7 mi., Sunrise 8:07 am, Sunset 5:41 pm.

Cloudy with a 60% chance of snow flurries or showers. High 22, WNW winds 10 -20 with gusts to 25.

Some overnight clouds with a 30% chance of evening snow showers. Low 17. WNW winds 5 -10 mph.

Some Lake Effect Snow today and a bit more coming on Sunday. The mention has been made of the possibility of some freezing rain on Monday. That’s definitely not a good thing. Hopefully by the time that rolls around it will have changed. Weather stuff does that – change. And often, especially here in the SW part of Michigan. And although we do get Lake Effect Snow here, we are fortunately just far enough inland from the lake to mostly escape the brunt of it. We really are lucky, we could be like Erie and Buffalo that get tremendous amounts of Lake Effect Snow on their end. Guess we can’t complain. Well, we can, but why?  At any rate, a bit of snow today and it won’t amount to much as far as accumulation.

Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021-SW Michigan-Warmer Today, Colder Tomorrow

Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021-SW Michigan-Warmer Today, Colder Tomorrow

Currently 35 with an average wind from the SSW of 7 mph. Feels like 35 degrees. Dew Point 30, Barometer 26.6 & rising, Humidity 81%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:09 am, Sunset 5:04 pm.

Mostly sunny this morning becoming mostly cloudy in the afternoon. High in the mid 30s. W winds 15-20 with gusts to 30.

60% chance of overnight snow. 1″ or less expected. Low around 20. MW 15-20 mph.

Today will be a lovely day. Lots of sunshine with more or less comfortable (for January) temperatures. That changes starting tomorrow when our temperatures will once again drop down into the more January expected range. Since the ice cover over the Great Lakes is at such a low level (about 3.9% rather than the 19% that should be in place by now) we can expect to begin seeing some frequent Lake Effect Snow as a result. And a lot of it might descend on our area rather than the usual north and northwest parts of Michigan we’ve been seeing so far. We’ll see how it goes. Nothing changes quicker than weather conditions – especially in a mostly water surrounded state like Michigan. But right now it looks like colder with some snow in our forecast. Just not today. Today will be a dandy.

Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021-SW Michigan-Sad Day Will Be Cloudy & Cold

Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021-SW Michigan-Sad Day Will Be Cloudy & Cold

Currently 21 with an average wind from the SSW of 3 mph. Feels like 15 degrees. Dew Point 19, Barometer 30.16, Humidity 92%, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8:08 am, Sunset 5:39 pm.

Mostly cloudy today with a high in the lower 30s. W winds 5 – 15 mph becoming SW winds 5 -20 with gusts to 30.

Mostly cloudy tonight with a 20% chance of snow showers. Low in th mid 20s. SW winds 15 -25 mph.

Got around an inch and a half of snow last night. Light flurries showing up off and on this morning and it sounds as if we’re set to get more tonight. At least tomorrow it appears as if we’ll see peeks at the sun. Looking forward to it. Woke this morning to see a very big bird – I think it’s a Falcon – disposing of one of the Mourning Doves. Wasn’t at all pleased to see this and yes, I do understand the way things go. Everything is fodder for anything meaner & more determined than they are. Even us – take a good look at what’s going on today. We – the majority of America – have become roadkill for China-owned Liberals.  It’s a cold day in our country for many reasons. Seasonal and senseless.

Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021-SW Michigan-Chilly With Snow Showers

Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021-SW Michigan-Chilly With Snow Showers

Currently 27 with an average wind from the SSW of 11 mph. Feels like 17 degrees. Dew Point 20, Barometer 30.14 & rising, Humidity 75%, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8:08 am, Sunset 5:38 pm.

Cloudy today with a 50% chance of snow. High 27. W winds 10 -20 mph.

Mostly cloudy with flurries early. Low 19, WNW winds 5 – 10 mph.

We are still – thankfully – escaping the brunt of snow systems that seem to be staying either to the north or the south of us. We are getting light snow off and on, but so far, nothing extreme, nothing as harsh as it could be – probably should be – this time of year. So far, so good. Not for the snow enthusiasts but for people like me just hanging in here until Spring rescues us from the ugliness of winter, it’s a dandy up to now. Are we going to continue to be so lucky? I highly doubt it, but am enjoying what’s been our luck so far.

Monday, Jan. 18, 2021-SW Michigan-Light Snow Falling Today

Monday, Jan. 18, 2021-SW Michigan-Light Snow Falling Today

Currently 31 with an average wind from the SSW of 2 mph. Feels like 24 degrees. Dew Point 28, Barometer 29.84, Humidity 90%, Visibility 1.8 mi., Sunrise 8:09 am, Sunset 5:36 pm.

Cloudy today with a 50% chance of snow showers. High in the lower 30s. W winds around 10 mph.

70% chance of overnight snow showers. Low in the mid 20s. W winds 5 – 15 mph.

Going to be a chilly week. Some snow today, tomorrow. Maybe a bit of sunshine on Thursday, but that’s the  only day to even dare to mention something as happy as that. About what we expect this time of year. It’s a gray, colorless time in SW Michigan. By the middle of February the soul cries out for color. Alas…nothing to do but keep crying for another month or so – at least. Oh well, nice will come back around eventually. At least with the weather.

Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021-SW Michigan-Foggy, Light Snow

Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021-SW Michigan-Foggy, Light Snow

Currently 34 with an average wind from the W of 3 mph. Feels like 34 degrees. Dew Point 29, Barometer 29.70 & falling, Humidity 81%, Visibility 1.5 mi., Sunrise 8:09 am, Sunset 5:35 pm.

Cloudy with a 50% chance of snow showers. Some fog. Temperatures holding steady in the mid 30s. WNW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Cloudy tonight with a few flurries possible. Low 26. Light and variable winds.

Rather an interesting morning. A bit foggy with off and on snow flurries. No sunshine at all possible today. In fact, maybe not until around Thursday could we see perhaps a peek of sunshine making its way down to us. In the meantime, what we have is what we’ll get – more or less. Could be worse, so we can definitely live with this.

Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021-SW Michigan-More Clouds, More Snow Showers

Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021-SW Michigan-More Clouds, More Snow Showers

Currently 29 with an average wind from the SSE of 7 mph. Feels like 22 degrees. Dew Point 28, Barometer 29.60, Humidity 95%, Visibility 5 mi., Sunrise 8:10 am, Sunset 5:33 pm.

Mostly cloudy with a 60% chance of rain/snow showers. High 36. SW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Cloudy overnight with a 40% chance of snow showers. Low near 30. WNW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Peering ahead, it looks like a bit of a chance nearly every day for snow showers of some sort. Nothing drastic – so far – just rather continuous. Could be so much worse than what we’re dealing with that really not too many folks can rightfully complain. Plenty of places around the country are dealing with far worse than our dreary cloudiness and constant snow showers.
