An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

Okay, so it looks like we’re heading to a couple of 60 degree days about midweek – won’t stay there yet, but hey even for a couple of days, it’s welcome. We’ll be in line for some rain then, too. About Wednesday or Thursday we might see some thundershowers and I’m so looking forward to that. Not only for the sight and sound of it, but because it will go a long ways, along with the warmer temperature, of helping to eliminate some snow cover. It’s a Spring-like week ahead. Nice.

Friday, March 5, 2021-SW Michigan-Warmer Temps And Rain For Next Week

Currently 29 with an average wind from the SSW of 4 mph .Feels like 21 degrees. Dew Point 22, Barometer 30.31, Humidity 77%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:12 am, Sunset 6:36 pm.

Mostly sunny today with a high in the lower 40s. NW winds 5 -15 mph.

Mostly clear with a low in the lower 20s. NW winds 5- 10 with gusts to 20 in the evening.

Next week we’re looking at warmer temperatures and some rain. Hopefully that will go a long way toward getting rid of the dirty piles of snow stacked up everywhere. Will we end up getting more snow? Oh, probably. But if we do, it won’t last long since we are finally heading in the right direction. The in between weather that bothers me the most and I keep hoping we won’t get is the freezing rain stuff. It always happens at some point when the seasons are busy shifting but it is the worst. If we’re going to get another blast to two of winter before it gives up and leaves, let’s hope it’s just snow. That is so much easier to cope with than ice. For the most part, though, the weather picture is definitely looking up.

Thursday, March 4,2021-SW Michigan-Seeing 60 Degrees Next Week

Currently 27 with an average wind from the WSW of 6 mph. Feels like 17 degrees. Dew Point 20, Barometer 30.26, Humidity 74%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:13 am, Sunset 6:34 pm.

Partly sunny today with a high in the mid 30s. N winds 5 -10 mph.

Mostly clear tonight with a low somewhere between 15-20 degrees. N winds 5 – 10 mph.

Okay, no more hinting, now it’s a flat out showing of 60 degrees for next week. Looks like Tuesday is going to be the best opportunity. I am SO ready for these lovely warmer temperatures to get to us. I am so confident of an early Spring that I went out and bought a new round of ant traps. Seriously. My apartment seems to be ground zero for tiny ants to appear in the Spring. It’s a constant battle between me and the little invaders all the time warm weather is with us. That’s okay. I’m bigger, hopefully smarter, and so far triumphant. This year I’m laying ’em down early, getting prepared for the influx. Much as I hate unwanted creatures in my home, I don’t even mind the thought of the coming contest of wills between me and them. I’m ready. Bring on Spring. Bring on warmer weather. Bring on the ants – I’m ready. :>)

Wed., March 3, 2021-SW Michigan-Couple Of 60 Degree Days By Next Week

Wed., March 3, 2021-SW Michigan-Couple Of 60 Degree Days By Next Week

Currently 40 with an average wind from the SSW of 2 mph. Feels like 40 degrees. Dew Point 35, Barometer 29.89 & falling, Humidity 82%, Visibility 8 mi., Sunrise 7:15 am, Sunset 6:23 pm.

Mostly sunny with a high in the mid 40s. W winds 5 – 10 mph becoming NW in the afternoon.

Partly cloudy with a low in the lower 20s. N winds 5 -10 mph.

Temperature is feeling better this morning than yesterday and peering ahead, if things go according to forecast, we could be seeing a couple of days hovering near 60 degrees. That sounds lovely. Time for me to start examining trees and bushes for buds to start forming. Too early? Of course, but I’m the eternal optimist and I know one of these fine early Spring days, I’ll see some. Won’t likely be in my tiny backyard though as it faces north and the shadow of the building pretty much blocks out any sun rays foolish enough to try to invade the territory. That’s why I’m looking at snow for a lot longer than most when I look out my kitchen window. But…it will go away and before you know it I’ll once again be able to sit out on my little patio with a cup of morning coffee and just be. That’s all I ask. Not much is it? Most years Mother Nature seems to think it is, but maybe not this one.

Tuesday, March 2, 2021-SW Michigan-Cold Morning But Warming Up

Tuesday, March 2, 2021-SW Michigan-Cold Morning But Warming Up

Currently 25 with an average wind from the S of 5 mph. Feels like 15 degrees. Dew Point 15, Barometer 30.31, Humidity 67%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:16 am, Sunset 6:33 pm.

Lots of sunshine today. High 37. SW winds 15-25 with higher gusts possible.

A few overnight clouds. Low 31. WSW winds 10-20 mph.

Pretty nippy this morning at 15 degrees when I went out to feed the critters, but knowing this is going away and things will warm up made it all if not okay, at least acceptable. Plenty of blue skies showing up and blue is such a lovely color after so many days with nothing but gray skies hovering over us. Can hardly wait for the ground to turn green. Ahhh….lovely days ahead. Could we get more snow? Certainly we could, but there again, knowing it’s temporary will make it bearable. We’re on the way to flowers and warm breezes and sweet summer days. Just knowing we’re heading in the right direction is uplifting. Can’t you feel your spirits rising? Yup…I know you can.

Monday, March 1, 2021-SW Michigan-Sunshine & Warmer Temps On The Way

Monday, March 1, 2021-SW Michigan-Sunshine & Warmer Temps On The Way

Currently 28 with an average wind from the WNW of 19 mph. Feels like 28 degrees. Dew Point 21, Barometer 30.07, Humidity 75%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:18 am, Sunset 6:31 pm.

Mostly cloudy with a 30% chance of snow showers becoming a mostly sunny afternoon. High around 30. NW winds 10-20 mph with gusts to 30.

Mostly clear overnight. Low near 15. NW winds 5- 10 mph becoming light.

Today might be chilly and tonight downright cold, but better temperatures are on the way. So looking forward to the snow and ice melting away. My little path out to where I feed the birds and critters has becoming an uneven slippery treacherous mess. Could I scatter some deicer salt along the way? Yeah, I could, but the animals use that pathway to get up to where my heated birdbath is, so in all fairness, I can’t justify putting down something that unhealthy for them. I’m just gingerly treading my way through the jagged ice, hoping Mother Nature does hurry up and help it melt. And since we’re all aware of just how unhelpful she can be…anyway, I’m being as careful, going as slow as if I’m an 80 year old woman….which far too often I totally forget I actually am :>)

The picture today is one of the turkey’s that show up for Bud and Beth’s feeding station. Magnificent, isn’t he? Great, in my mind, to help keep such creatures alive and well fed. I’m so happy my kids have these generous natures.

Anyway, bottom line is better weather is on the way. It’s MARCH – and – MARCH COULD BE NICE. This one promises to be one such month. I’m keeping the faith.

Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021-SW Michigan-End Of February-Always A Welcome Time

Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021-SW Michigan-End Of February-Always A Welcome Time

Currently 39 with an average wind from the E of 2 mph. Feels like 35 degrees. Dew Point 39, Barometer 29.75, Humidity 100%, Visibility 1.5 mi., Sunrise 7:20 am, Sunset 6:29 pm.

A 70% chance of rain showers through early afternoon. Areas of fog throughout the day. High upper 40s. SE winds 10-15 becoming SW with gusts to 40 in the afternoon.

Mostly cloudy in the evening becoming partly cloudy. Low in the mid 20s. W winds 15-25 with gusts to 40 becoming NW 10-15 mph.

Okay, so no sunshine that-as of yesterday-was supposed to grace our afternoon. This isn’t going to put in an appearance. But by the same token, the rain predicted for this morning never materialized, either. Sort of a tradeoff, I guess. Tomorrow, as of now, is supposed to be on the cool, breezy side, but after we get through that, the rest of the week promises a warm up. 40s and 50s? For the first week in March in Michigan? Oh yeah…this, I’m thinking, is going to be one of those March months I keep predicting will be nice. I’m ready for it. Critters are still feeding heavy, nothing much out there of them this time of year, so I keep the food chain going. Got a couple of sons who do the same. I know nature got along without us before this, but while we’re here, why not help them out? Well, we do. And I’m happy with us for doing so.

Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021-SW Michigan-Today Not Bad, Tomorrow Sounds Crummy

Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021-SW Michigan-Today Not Bad, Tomorrow Sounds Crummy

Currently 35 with an average wind from the SSW of 2 mph. Feels like 32. Dew Point 35, Barometer 29.96, Humidity 100%, Visibility 1.5 mi., Sunrise 7:21 am, Sunset 6:28 pm.

Mostly cloudy becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon. Patchy fog until about midday. High in the upper 40s. SW winds 10 mph.

Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of drizzle, freezing drizzle, & snow. Low in the lower 30s. SE winds 5 -10 mph.

A lovely moon last night. Me? I have to take everyone’s word on that. Where my little nest is situation I am surrounded by trees. My view of the sky is to the north or pretty much straight up. Not much usually going on in either direction. So thank goodness I have other eyes and cameras trained on the beauty like last night’s display. This picture is from son, Glenn.

Got a bit of overnight snow, but the temperature should rise enough to tend to that. Still plenty of snow ground cover, but hey…by the end of next week we could be looking at 50 degrees. Seriously! That sounds so wonderful I can hardly stand it :>) Tomorrow sound like a bummer with a good chance of freezing drizzle, but we can get through that hopefully safe and sound and on with a better bunch of days ahead.

Friday, Feb. 26, 2021-SW Michigan-Too Soon For Return Of Southern Birds

Friday, Feb. 26, 2021-SW Michigan-Too Soon For Return Of Southern Birds

Currently 30 with an average wind from the S of 8 mph. Feels like 30 degrees. Dew Point 24, Barometer 30.28, Humidity 77%, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 7:23 am, Sunset 6:27 pm.

Mostly sunny today with a high in the lower 40s. S winds around 10 mph. Gusts to 20 in the afternoon.

Partly cloudy with a 70% chance of an ugly night. Snow possibly mixed with rain in the evening, becoming snow with a chance of mixing with freezing rain at some point during the night. Patchy fog likely. Snow accumulation 1″ possible. Low around 30. SE winds 10 mph becoming S.

Too soon to be thinking Spring. Really. And people seeing the return of Robins, Bluebirds, Flamingos…well, no, maybe not those, but the rest of the returning feathered creatures… NO. Stay south. Wait. Use your tiny heads and stay away until the snow and ice and cold are gone and the ground softens up, the trees start to bloom…you know…time where you can actually survive. We may have an early Spring coming our way – my thinking, anyway – but someone is giving these winged critters some bad advise right now. I would rather see the deer, possums, etc., my regular winter visitors feeding out in my tiny backyard for a bit yet than those returning south-seeking during the winter, here-too-soon feeders.

Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021-SW Michigan-40 Degree Days Ahead

Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021-SW Michigan-40 Degree Days Ahead

Currently 28 with an average wind from the S of 3 mph. Feels like 23 degrees. Dew Point 25, Barometer 30.29, Humidity 90%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:25 am, Sunset 6:26 pm.

Partly sunny today with a 20% chance of snow showers until about midday. Patchy morning fog. High in the mid 30s. SW winds around 10 mph becoming W in the afternoon.

Partly cloudy with a 20% chance of overnight snow showers. Low in the lower 20s. SW winds 5 -10 mph.

Okay, today probably won’t make it that high but looking ahead there appears to be almost an entire week of 40 degree days. Pretty exciting because that’s going to go a long way toward helping us get rid of too many inches of snow littering the surface of our little corner of the world. Since for the most part our nighttime temperatures are going to be below freezing we’re going to be faced with slippery surfaces every single morning. Sidewalks, driveways, etc. are going to present dangerous conditions until the day wears on and that ice melts into water again. Just want everyone to be careful. Slips and falls hardly ever result in pleasant situations. But – hope runs high now that the brunt of winter is behind us and there’s nothing much ahead, for the most part, but warmer, brighter days. About time!
