An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

Saturday, May 8, 2021-SW Michigan-Cool But At Least Some Sunshine Today

Currently 43 with an average wind from the WNW of 8 mph. Feels like 40 degrees. Dew Point 31, Barometer 30.15 & rising, Humidity 61%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:27 am, Sunset 8:51 pm.

Sunny until midday becoming partly sunny. High in the mid 50s. NW winds 5 -10 mph.

Mostly cloudy overnight with a low in the upper 30s. Light winds.

Freeze warning last night and likely again tonight. Mother Nature has sure screwed up here. April showers are supposed to bring May flowers…this year it’s been more like March heat brings May sleet. And nobody is happy about it. Saw my first Hummingbird this morning at the feeder and I swear it was shivering from the cold. There’s nothing good about this month of May weather. April was nothing to brag about and May has managed to drag our joy down even farther. Flowers are blooming, trees are leafing, birds are returning but it’s all wrapped up in weather too chilly to make getting out there and enjoying it almost not worth the effort of bundling up to do so. Come on…Time to get serious about being in the warmth and keeping it on hand.

Friday, May 7, 2021-SW Michigan-Month Of May Not Shaping Up To Be Stellar

Friday, May 7, 2021-SW Michigan-Month Of May Not Shaping Up To Be Stellar

Currently 42 with an average wind from the SSE of 2 mph. Feels like 42 degrees. Dew Point 41, Barometer 29.96 & falling, Humidity 95%, Visibility 7 mi., Sunrise 6:28 am, Sunset 8:50 pm.

Mostly cloudy. Widespread dense fog until about midday. A 40% chance of rain and a slight chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon. High in the lower 50s. SW winds 5 -10 mph becoming NW 10-15 with gusts to 25 in the afternoon.

Partly cloudy overnight with a chance of widespread frost. Low in the lower 30s. NW winds 5-15 mph with gusts to 25.

It doesn’t seem as if this month of May is going to be suddenly turning a corner and becoming one like we want and look forward to. The cool weather continues with brief warm-ups to raise our hopes – only to dash them again over and over. This isn’t fun. Especially not after the fabulous month of March we had. Didn’t we all expect great and grand things from our weather this time around? Yup- and misplaced expectations it turned out to be. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m still hanging on to my long sleeve shirts for the time being. It may be May but they’re sure coming in handy this year much longer than I would have thought.

Thursday, May 6, 2021-SW Michigan-Another Week Of Cool Temps Likely

Thursday, May 6, 2021-SW Michigan-Another Week Of Cool Temps Likely

Currently 46 with an average wind from the NNE of 2 mph. Feels like 46. Dew Point 36, Barometer 30.15, Humidity 68%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:29 am, Sunset 8:48 pm.

90% chance of rain showers today. High in the upper 40s. Light winds becoming NE around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Partly cloudy with a 20% chance of overnight rain showers. Low in the mid 30s. Light winds.

It does look as if the next 5 or 6 days are going to be lingering in the 50 degree range. However,  unless things don’t change all that much between now and then, by about this time next week we could be creeping back up into the 60/70 degree range. I sure hope so. This chilly weather is not what we’d hope to be getting in May. These storm systems just keep on rolling along across the country from the west to the east and right after them always seems to come the inevitable cool weather. And here we are stuck in the middle. Would be lovely to have that change soon. Not the being stuck in the middle, this isn’t a bad place to be, but the storm systems and the cold fronts I think we’ve had enough of that for awhile.

Wednesday, May 5, 2021-SW Michigan-Couple More 40 Degree Days Coming

Wednesday, May 5, 2021-SW Michigan-Couple More 40 Degree Days Coming

Currently 44 with an average wind from the W of 10 mph. Feels like 40 degrees. Dew Point 35, Barometer 30.07, Humidity 70%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:30 am, Sunset 8:47 pm.

Partly sunny until midday becoming mostly sunny. High in the upper 50s. NW winds 10-15 mph with gusts to 25.

Partly cloudy in the evening becoming mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of rain showers. Low in the upper 30s. Light winds.

Sure getting tired of this stuff. Tomorrow and likely the next day will see a high only in the upper 40s. This is wearing very thin now. It’s time to be seeing warmth in our forecasts. I guess we needn’t be looking for it any time soon. Eventually, maybe. In the meantime the trees are trying their best to leaf out and I do have an Oriole pair showing up now in my feeder station. No Hummingbird yet, but my hope are high. Of course if they had any sense they’d stay south until it warms up but I don’t know as Hummingbirds are known for being brainy birds. Just tiny.

Tuesday, May 4, 2021-SW Michigan-Chilly For May Weather

Tuesday, May 4, 2021-SW Michigan-Chilly For May Weather

Currently 50 with an average wind from WNW of 9 mph. Feels like 50 degrees. Dew Point 45, Barometer 29.75, Humidity 85%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:32 am, Sunset 8:46 pm.

Cloudy with a 20% chance of rain. High in the mid 50s. NW winds 10-15 mph with gusts to 25.

Partly cloudy with a 20% chance of rain. High in the upper 30s. NW winds 10-15 mph with gusts to 25 in the evening.

Not feeling very May-like these days. And I understand there are parts of the country due to feel even less Mayish. It would be lovely if it would warm back up – you know like our April was? April felt like May and May is feeling like March. What the heck is gong on here? Has Mother Nature somehow managed to mess up the calendar? Is there anyone around who can set her straight? Let’s hope so. Getting rather tired of this.

Monday, May 3, 2021-SW Michigan-Rainy Day, More Rain To Come

Monday, May 3, 2021-SW Michigan-Rainy Day, More Rain To Come

Currently 59 with an average wind from the SE of 1 mph. Feels like 59 degrees. Dew Point 56, Barometer 29.62, Humidity 91%, Visibility 7 mi., Sunrise 6:33 am, Sunset 8:45 pm.

Mostly cloudy with a 50% chance of rain. High in the upper 60s. S winds 5 -10 mph.

Partly cloudy with a 50% chance of overnight showers and isolated thunderstorms. Low in the upper 40s. S winds 5 – 10 mph becoming SW 10-15 mph.

Not an especially pleasant morning. And with a cool front coming along overnight, it  won’t be particularly fun tomorrow either. In fact, this entire week looks to be on the chilly side with a few more opportunities for rain. I have higher hopes for next week.

Yesterday was a delight. Managed to sit outside, even though by afternoon it had become rather windy. In fact, I kept watching small birds almost blowing off the feeder perches. Persistence paid off for some, not for others.  For me. in spite of the breeze blowing, the warmth was welcome and appreciated. Today the wind has died down but the rain has taken over the scene. And the temperatures aren’t going to come even close to what they were only a day ago. Yesterday I could sit out and enjoy the outdoors. Wind or not. Today, not so likely, as sitting in a chilly rain isn’t nearly as much of a joy.  So today is an inside day.

Sunday, May 2, 2021-SW Michigan-A Delightful Day

Sunday, May 2, 2021-SW Michigan-A Delightful Day

Currently 74 with an average wind from the SW of 6 mph. Feels like 74 degrees. Dew Point 54, Barometer 29.65, Humidity 46%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:34 am, Sunset 8:45 pm.

Mostly sunny becoming partly sunny. High in the upper 70s. SW winds 15-20 mph with gusts to 30.

Partly cloudy with a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Low in the upper 50s. S winds 5 -10 mph.

It’s a wonderful morning. The air is clean and warm, a light breeze blowing. If all days could be like this, I’d live it with love for every second. A couple days coming up with some rain possible, but today is about perfect.  It’s hard to be inside on a day like this. You just want to be out soaking up every second of it. Soon as I’m finished with whatever needs tending to inside, I’m out on my little patio with a cup of tea, just communing with nature for all it’s worth. Color me happy.

Saturday, May 1, 2021-SW Michigan-More Blue Sky Than Clouds Today

Saturday, May 1, 2021-SW Michigan-More Blue Sky Than Clouds Today

Currently 54 with an average wind from the SSE of 4 mph. Feels like 54 degrees. Dew Point 30, Barometer 29.99, Humidity 40%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:30 am, Sunset 8;43 pm.

Windy. Party sunny with a 20% chance of rain in the afternoon. High around 70. S winds 10-20 mph with gusts to 35 becoming SW 20-25 mph with gusts to 45 in the afternoon.

Partly cloudy with a 40% chance of overnight thunderstorms and rain. Low in the mid 50s. SW winds 5-15 mph with gusts to 30.

Plenty of blue sky this morning. A pale blue but none-the-less. The wind is going to kick up and perhaps bring in some late afternoon rain. For sure a better chance overnight. Tomorrow morning should bring us some sun, but no bets on later in the day and overnight into Monday. Seems like rain is determined to visit us, just having a hard time settling in. It’ll get here. Probably get serious by Monday.

Friday, April 30, 2021-SW Michigan-Clouds Flying By Bringing Sunshine

Friday, April 30, 2021-SW Michigan-Clouds Flying By Bringing Sunshine

Currently 47 with an average wind from the NW 11-14 mph. Feels like 43 degrees. Dew Point 39, Barometer 30.03, Humidity 75%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:38 am, Sunset 8:43 pm.

50% chance of early rain becoming a mostly sunny afternoon. High 54. NNW winds 15-25 mph with higher gusts possible.

Clear overnight skies. Low 39. W winds 10-20 mph decreasing to 5-10 mph.

Had some light rain this morning and it is breezy out there. But looking up at the sky, those clouds are literally flying by. I dare say it’s more than breezy way up  where they are. Fast moving from the north. I guess that means cooler temperatures, at least briefly. I don’t recall the north bringing us warmth as a general rule. I did hear one meteorologist mention chance of some light frost tonight, but I choose to ignore that one. I don’t think it’s going to get that cool. Don’t see anything especially warm or unseasonably cold for us this coming week. Looks like a generous mix of both coming our way. Thinking we could be looking at what might end up more rain than sun for awhile. So I reckon the secret to enjoyment is to take advantage of the sun when it’s out and tend to inside tasks when the rain part hits. Sounds like a plan to me.

Thursday, April 29, 2021-SW Michigan-Chilly, Light Rain Today

Thursday, April 29, 2021-SW Michigan-Chilly, Light Rain Today

Currently 50 with an average wind from the WNW of 3 mph. Feels like 46 degrees. Dew point 45, Barometer 29.80, Humidity 85%, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 6:38 am, Sunset 8:41 pm.

80% chance of rain. High near 60 degrees. NNW winds 10-20 mph.

24% chance of overnight rain with a low near 40. WNW winds 10-20 mph.

Not going to be a pretty day today. It will stay chilly, gray and damp. Doesn’t look like much rain  but off and on it’s determined to put in an appearance today. However, tomorrow we will see some sunshine. Sunday, too. And decent temperatures. So our weekend is looking up, we just have to get through this dreary little day to get there. Cold fronts keep on keeping on like waves rolling through our area. I guess the goal is to enjoy the nice days between those swells of not so nice. We can do it. We’ve put up with worse and we know we’re heading in the right direction. Soon delightful warm days will be – hopefully – the norm.
