An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

Monday, Jan. 3, 2022-SW Michigan-Not A Bad Couple Of Winter Days

Currently 15 with an average wind from the SE of 4 mph. Feels like 10 degrees. Dew Point 12, Humidity 85%, Barometer 30.33, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:19 pm.

Sun and clouds today. High 29. SW winds 10-20 mph.

A few passing overnight clouds. Low 19. SW winds 10-15 mph.

Okay, so it’s cold. But at least it isn’t snowing or drizzling freezing stuff. This is probably as good as it gets in a Michigan January. Just seeing some sunshine is a wonder. Look for some snow about mid-week. Sounds like perhaps a bunch over by the lake shore but maybe not so much around my little back yard. A couple more inches? We’ll see how it goes. But the cold will definitely be hanging around.

Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022-SW Michigan-Winter Cold Has Arrived

Currently 16 with an average wind from the N of 8 mph. Feels like 6 degrees. Dew point 8, Humidity 71%, Barometer 30.11, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:18 pm.

Cloudy early becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon. A few snow flurries are possible. High 26. N winds 10-15 mph.

Some overnight clouds. Low 13. Light and variable winds.

I got 4″ of snow overnight in my little backyard so Winter Storm Frida didn’t totally miss us. As predicted the brunt of the storm seemed to pass to the south of us.  The snow isn’t bad, but the cold seems brutal. And it doesn’t look as if it’s going to warm up anytime soon. Bundle up, thing Spring, carry on…

Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022-SW Michigan- New Year’s To Start With A Winter Storm

Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022-SW Michigan- New Year’s To Start With A Winter Storm

Currently 28 with an average wind from the N of 11 mph. Feels like 18 degrees. Dew Point 25, Humidity 88%, Barometer 29.91, Visibility 6 mi., Sunrise 8;14 am, Sunset 5:17 pm.

Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 7:00 am Sunday. Patchy freezing drizzle at onset with the possibility of 3-6″ of snow. Some blowing and drifting possible with gusty NE winds.

Cloudy today with a 60% chance of snow. High 29. NNE winds 10-15 mph.

Overnight snow. Low 18. NNE winds 10-15 mph.

We seem to be on the northern edge of this storm so it doesn’t look right now as if we’re going to get slammed by this one. A little wobble either way could make a difference of a few inches. It needs some watching and without doubt the roads, either way, will become unpleasant to be driving on. So just be careful.

What looks more troublesome is the deep dip in the temperature for next week. Days of 20 degrees and a few daytime temps in the high teens. That’s darn cold. So be prepared to have to bundle up before heading out.

Friday, Dec. 31, 2021-SW Michigan-Mild Today, Temperatures To Tumble Next Week

Friday, Dec. 31, 2021-SW Michigan-Mild Today, Temperatures To Tumble Next Week

Currently 35 with an average wind from the SSE of 2 mph. Feels like 35 degrees. Dew Point 33, Humidity 90%, Barometer 29.85, Visibility 7 mil, Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:16 pm.

Cloudy with patchy fog. Temperatures near steady in the upper 30s. Light winds becoming SE 5-10 mph in the afternoon.

60% chance of overnight rain with chances of freezing drizzle during the night hours. Low 29. NE winds 5-10 mph with gusts to 20.

As of right now, it looks like this time we will be on the northern edge of the coming winter storm. Frida seems to be sliding by to the south of us leaving us in what likely will be 2-3″ of snow. And we all know that can change. Our usual pattern is to be on the southern edge of passing storms so this one is at least a variation. I don’t think my area is in for a lot of snow. But we are going to share in the big dip in temperatures next week. Here comes the cold. If you’re out and about for New Year’s Eve, just be watchful in case the rain this evening turns into a frozen mix. And Happy New Year.

Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021-SW Michigan-Clouds And Chilly Temperature

Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021-SW Michigan-Clouds And Chilly Temperature

Currently 28 with an average wind from the E of 7 mph. Feels like 28 degrees. Dew Point 24, Humidity 86%, Barometer 29.99, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:16 pm.

A mix of sun and clouds. High around 33. ESE winds 5-10 mph.

Cloudy with areas of fog. Low in the upper 20s. SE winds 5-10 mph becoming S with gusts to 20.

Not looking at much in the line of precipitation for today or tomorrow. Not until tomorrow evening.  Then we could be in store for some drizzle probably mixed with snow. We do have to watch out for snow on Saturday and Saturday night. Forecasts are anywhere from 2-6″ so it can get bad – or not. Just be watchful

Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021-SW Michigan-Pattern Of Patchy Fog, Freezing Drizzle

Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021-SW Michigan-Pattern Of Patchy Fog, Freezing Drizzle

Currently 33 with an average wind from the SW of 8 mph. Feels like 33 degrees. Dew Point 34, Humidity 100%, Barometer 29.85, Visibility 5 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:15 pm.

Mostly cloudy with areas of patchy fog. High 35 degrees. W winds 10-15 mph.

Overcast with the possibilities of a few flurries or snow showers overnight. Low 21. Light and variable winds.

Seems like these days are carbon copies of the one before. A little fog, a little snow, a little freezing drizzle. Colorless skies but at least no temperatures in the extreme for now.

Looking at the possibility of a winter storm moving in over the weekend. Just in time for New Year’s Eve perhaps. Not a good thing, but nothing can be done about it beyond keeping an eye out and being careful. We, here in our little corner of SW Michigan, seem to most often end up at the tag end or outer fringe of whatever storm system is passing by. And this case might turn out to be the same. We might end up with more of the frozen mix kind of precipitation. Maybe. Maybe not. SO…just watch out for snow or some form of unwelcome winter weather.  Because which ever way this goes, the roads are not going to be good. Count on at least that.

Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021-SW Michigan-More Wintry Weather Due Late Today/Tonight

Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021-SW Michigan-More Wintry Weather Due Late Today/Tonight

Currently 27 with an average wind from the E of 3 mph. Feels like 27 degrees. Dew Point 25, Humidity 87%, Barometer 29.9, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:14 pm.

Cloudy with a 90% chance of snow developing late. Some sleet may be mixed in. High 32. E winds 5-10 mph.

90% chance of evening snow tapering off to cloudy overnight skies. Low near 30. E winds 10-15 mph.

A bit of calm this morning with more winter weather coming in later today and overnight. It sounds like another round of it coming in Wednesday night, too.  Then another round coming in New Year’s Eve and Sunday. We seem to be in a pattern of waves of wintry weather. Getting out and about in between them is the secret, I guess. At any rate, do be careful.

Monday, Dec. 27, 2021-SW Michigan-After Christmas Snow For Us

Monday, Dec. 27, 2021-SW Michigan-After Christmas Snow For Us

Currently 33 with an average wind from the E of 2 mph. Feels like 33 degrees. Dew Point 33, Humidity 98%, Barometer 29.69, Visibility 8 mi., Sunrise 8;14 am, Sunset 5:15 pm.

Cloudy with a high of 41. SSE winds 10-15 mph.

Partly cloudy tonight. Low 28. W winds 10-20 mph.

Roads had to be a nightmare this morning for those having to drive on them. Not only the snow but the freezing drizzle that mixed in with it. I measured 2 1/2″ of snow in my backyard…and trust me, this was wet, heavy snow that was not fun as I carefully – very carefully – cleared away a smallish skating pond area to toss out critter food into.  Today and tomorrow should be okay but more of this is moving in on Tuesday night/Wednesday. So just be prepared and watchful.

Sunday, Dec. 26, 2021-SW Michigan-Calm Today, Snow Tonight

Sunday, Dec. 26, 2021-SW Michigan-Calm Today, Snow Tonight

Currently 23 with an average wind from the NE 3 mph. Feels like 23 degrees. Dew Point 24, Humidity 94%, Barometer 30.14, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:12 am, Sunset 5:12 pm.

Sunny morning, afternoon clouds. High 38. NE winds 5 – 10 mph with gusts to 20 in the afternoon.

Cloudy overnight with a 90% chance of snow, possibly mixed with some freezing rain. Snow accumulation 1″ or so, some light ice accumulation possible. Low 29. E winds 10-20 mph with gusts to 30.

Not a bad morning and most of the day should be fine. Watch out for the overnight weather and tomorrow. Chance of freezing rain on Monday. Maybe even some snow on Tuesday. Hopefully all who traveled for Christmas will be safely home by the end of today.

Midweek should be clear with no precipitation anticipated as of now. Perhaps some snow moving in around next Saturday. Just be careful over the next couple of days.

Saturday, Dec. 25, 2021-SW Michigan-Merry Christmas To All

Saturday, Dec. 25, 2021-SW Michigan-Merry Christmas To All

Currently 42with an average wind from the NW of 3 mph. Feels like 37 degrees. Dew Point 41, Humidity 100%, Barometer 29.63, Visibility 1.5 mi., Sunrise 8:12 am, Sunset 5:12 pm.

Cloudy with morning fog becoming partly sunny in the afternoon. High mid 40s. N winds 5 -10 mph with gusts to 20.

Partly cloudy overnight with a low in  the mid 20s. Light winds.

Not exactly traditional Christmas day weather but it’s at least pleasant enough to leave us with good roads to drive on. That’s a definite plus. No snow, but some of the reporting stations are throwing in the possibility of the dread freezing wintry mix around Monday and Tuesday. Not good. Be careful, just in case. In the meantime, have a Merry Christmas and enjoy your day.
