An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.
Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022-SW Michigan-Winter Storm Landon Fizzled Out Here

Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022-SW Michigan-Winter Storm Landon Fizzled Out Here

Currently 17 with an average wind from the NE of 2 mph. Feels like 6 degrees. Dew Point 7, Humidity 64%, Barometer 30.54, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:55 am, Sunset 5:57 pm.

Cloudy with a high around 121. NE winds 10-15 mph.

Mostly cloudy becoming a clear overnight sky. Low 4. NE winds 5-10 mph.

Going to be a bitter cold night again. One thing we learned from all the winter storm hype was that, as usual, it’s vastly overdone for the most part. At least here. Measured about 2 1/2″ of snow total in my little backyard. Not much of a snow storm. And yes, I do realize that Landon is doing plenty of bad stuff elsewhere. Just not here. Personally, not unhappy about that. (The non-action here, not the too much action elsewhere part) We are way, way overdo for a good solid snow storm, but this wasn’t it for us. Not even close.

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022-SW Michigan-Air Full Of Tiny Snowflakes

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022-SW Michigan-Air Full Of Tiny Snowflakes

Currently 24 with an average wind from the NNW of 4 mph. Feels like 18 degrees. Dew Point 24, Humidity 100%, Barometer 30.14, Visibility 0.68 mi, Sunrise 7:56 am, Sunset 5:55 pm.

Winter Weather Advisory in effect until Thursday 11 pm. Total snowfall 4-7″ possible.

100% chance of snow. 1-3″ OR 1-4″ possible. High in the upper 20s. N winds 10-15 mph.

Chance of overnight snow 50%. Low near 15 degrees. N winds 10-15 mph.

SO many of the reporting sites are differing from each other that the only thing we can count on is it’s going to snow. What we end up with is going to be a wait and see propitiation. Anywhere from an inch to 7 inches could end up on our surface by the end of Winter Storm Landon. This winter storm is stretching from one end of the country to the other. A huge storm offering about every winter problem that is possible. Freezing rain, ice, sleet, snow…and behind it cold temperatures.  And it’s not a fast moving storm. It’s going to take its time and make life miserable for at least a couple of days. Some parts of lower Michigan are going to get dumped on. My particular part of SW Michigan? I’m still holding on to about 3″…but I’m not certain enough to bet any money on that. All I’m sure of is it is snowing now and we are expecting more of it. Just be careful out there and be happy we aren’t in that freezing rain section of this varied storm.

Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022-SW Michigan-Anticipating Some Snow

Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022-SW Michigan-Anticipating Some Snow

Currently 31 with an average wind from the SE of 8 mph. Feels like 23 mph. Dew Point 24, Humidity 70%, Barometer 29.95 & falling, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 7:57 pm, Sunset 5:54 pm.

Winter Weather Advisory in effect from around 2 am Wednesday through 11 pm Thursday. Predictions for my area range right around 3-6″.

Partly to mostly cloudy morning will transition to cloudy skies with a 70% chance of afternoon rain. High 41. SSW winds 10-20 mph.

Rain and snow mix in the evening will change to snow showers overnight. Less and 1″ expected. Low 24. W winds 5-10 mph.

We still are resting on the upper reaches of Winter Storm Landon and we won’t be seeing anything like what they will be getting to the south of us. 8-12″ of snow is a pretty firm prediction for the southern part of Michigan. Plenty of people here in my SW area would love to see that but unfortunately, for them at least, we aren’t falling into that zone. It will be the first major snowfall storm for lower Michigan in a long time. So lots of folks will be digging out from this one. We’ll be needing our snow shovels, but nothing like what those to the south of us will be using.

Monday, Jan. 31, 2022-SW Michigan-Morning Clouds Some Afternoon Sun

Monday, Jan. 31, 2022-SW Michigan-Morning Clouds Some Afternoon Sun

Currently 24 with an average wind from the E of 4 mph. Feels like 20 degrees. Dew Point 18, Humidity 82%, Barometer 30.23 & rising, Visibility 6 mi., Sunrise 7:58 am, Sunset 5:53 pm.

Cloudy morning skies could become partly cloudy in the afternoon. High around 32. SSE winds 5 -10 mph.

Overcast night skies. Low 24. SSE winds 10-20 mph.

Look for some rain maybe mixed with some snow tomorrow. I don’t see a whole lot of snow for us from this system. Looks like once again the brunt of it is going to miss us. Makes me happy but I know there are plenty who would relish a good snowfall with some impressive totals. I rather think this isn’t the storm to give us that. Things could change between here and then but isn’t looking like that right now.

Sunday, Jan. 30, 3022-SW Michigan-Small Warm Up Coming

Sunday, Jan. 30, 3022-SW Michigan-Small Warm Up Coming

Currently 21 with an average wind from the E of 2 mph. Feels like 21 degrees. Dew Point 14, Humidity 72%, Barometer 24.99 & rising, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 7:59 am, Sunset 5:52 pm.

Cloudy today with a high near 29 degrees. Light and variable winds.

Cloudy overnight with a low of 12 degrees. Light and variable winds.

So – a tiny bit of warmth coming in for a couple of days and then some snow. How much snow? That’s where it gets funny. Depending on which system and which site you pay attention to anywhere from none to 2″ to 2′. I’m not even going to make an estimate until about Tuesday so I can tell where this system is going to be heading. Right now it’s crazy to guess. So I won’t. But I will say that by the end of the week the miserable cold temperatures will once again be ours.

Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022-SW Michigan-Mild Until Maybe Mid-Week

Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022-SW Michigan-Mild Until Maybe Mid-Week

Currently 12 with an average wind from the SE of 6 mph. Feels like 3 degrees. Dew Point 6, Humidity 76%, Barometer 30.26 & falling, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:00 am, Sunset 5:50 pm.

Cloudy with a high of 22. 20% chance of some snow showers. SSW winds 5-10 mph.

Cloudy overnight with a low around 15. 50% chance of  a few snow showers. SSE winds 5-10 mph with gusts to 20 in the evening.

Nothing much to watch out here until about mid-week. Maybe some snow day by day but nothing significant expected. And the entire week is completely iffy at the moment. We may or may not get a lot of snow. Some sites are saying up to 6″ over Wednesday and Thursday alone but others not so much. So many things can change between now and then that it’s a bit tricky to try and pin point snow depths – or even snow coming at all. Because it’s the end of January and beginning of February in Michigan I’d be comfortable looking for cold temperatures and some snow. Can’t go too far off with that.

Friday, Jan. 28, 2022-SW Michigan-Sunshine Today But Still Cold

Friday, Jan. 28, 2022-SW Michigan-Sunshine Today But Still Cold

Currently 11 with an average wind from the SSW of 3 mph. Feels like 11 degrees. Dew Point 4, Humidity 73%, Barometer 30.28, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:01 am, Sunset 5:49 pm.

Mostly sunny today with a high of 15-20 degrees. NE winds around 10 mph.

Partly cloudy overnight with a low of 0-5 degrees. Light winds.

Expect a brief sort-of warm up about next Tuesday/Wednesday but along with that slight rise in our temperatures will come snow. So be expecting that too. After which the temps again take a nose-dive. Just more of the same here.

Along the East Coast…folks are expecting the worse. I have a friend who has worked out this scenario regarding the attire of the weather girl/traffic girl when they hand out their predictions. If they’re unsure or really have nothing much to say, they give you short skirts and low necklines. Sort of a distraction move. Works more with guys than with female viewers, but still…  Any way, by now the weather girls over on the coast must be wearing turtle neck tops and sweats down to their thick-socked ankles. Well…perhaps not quite, due to fashion constraints, but close. There doesn’t seem to be any doubt now that a Nor’easter is seeming set on moving in and very soon. Good luck to them. Glad I’m not there to have to go through it.

Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022-SW Michigan-Clouds, Cold, Possible Snow Showers

Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022-SW Michigan-Clouds, Cold, Possible Snow Showers

Currently 18 with an average wind from the SW of 12 mph. Feels like 5 degrees. Dew Point 12, Humidity 78%, Barometer 30.08 & falling, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:02 am, Sunset 5:47 pm.

50% chance of snow showers. High in the upper 20s. WSW winds 10-20 mph becoming W 10-15 mph with gusts to 35 in the afternoon.

Partly cloudy with a 50% chance of snow showers. Low 0-5. N winds 10-15 mph with gusts to 25 mph.

Winter weather continues to hang tight, keeping us cold and watching for snow showers.  Not nearly as bad as the east coast looking forward to a Nor’easter moving up the coast over the weekend. A snow and wind event like what is possible there puts our weather to shame as far as threatening or alarming. We may end up with some significant snow sooner or later – maybe next week? – but not right now.

Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022-SW Michigan-Cold And Snow Showers Continue

Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022-SW Michigan-Cold And Snow Showers Continue

Currently 9 with a calm wind from the ESE. Feels like 9 degrees. Dew Point 9, Humidity 100%, Barometer 30.36, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8:03 am, Sunset 5:06 pm.

Mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of snow showers. High 15-20. Light winds becoming SW 5-15 mph with gusts to around 25 mph.

Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy overnight. Low 5-10. sW winds 10-15 mph with gusts to around 30. Wind chills to -10.

Was only 4 degrees in my little backyard this morning. That’s cold. I had no sooner tossed stuff out for the birds, squirrels and deer than the place was crowded with diners. They must be just plain cold and hungry this time of year. Should warm up a tad next week, but along with that appears to be the chance for more snow. So no escape from any of this. Just have to hunker down and think Spring. That’s what I’m doing anyway.

Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022-SW Michigan-Some Sun, Lots Of Cold

Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022-SW Michigan-Some Sun, Lots Of Cold

Currently 14 with an average wind from the SW of 1 mph. Feels like 14 degrees. Dew Point 12, Humidity 87%, Barometer 30.11, Visibility 8 mi., Sunrise 8:04 am, Sunset 5:45 pm.

Mostly cloudy with a 50% chance of some snow showers. High 15-20 degrees. W winds 5-15 mph.

Mostly cloudy to partly cloudy overnight with a 40% chance of snow showers. Low 0-5 above. NW winds 5-10 with wind chills as low as 10 below, becoming light.

So, we have the cold hanging on and the possibility of some snow but at least we aren’t facing the possibility of a nor’easter like the East coast. Never good for them and it’s shaping up to be a very real chance for the first real big snow of the season taking aim this coming weekend. As usual, a wait and see thing. Going to get snow? Rain? Combination? Keeping an eye on it, but right now it’s looking like things could get very snowy for them – or not. Weather! It’s constantly changing and fascinating.
