An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025-SW Michigan-Temps To Rise A Bit

Currently 18 degrees with an average wind from the WNW of 6 mph. Feels like 12 degrees. Dew Point 17, Humidity 91%, Barometer 30.25, Visibility 3 mi., Sunrise 7:33 am, Sunset 6:20 pm.

Mostly cloudy with a 40% chance of snow showers until midday. High in the mid 20s. NW winds around 10 mph.

Mostly cloudy becoming partly cloudy. Low 10-15 mph. NW winds 5-10 mph becoming light.

Slowly but surely our temperatures are set to begin a rise in numbers. Nothing speedy but gradually. Not that we won’t see a brief set-back now and again – like around the first of March – but they should be brief and bearable.  There’s been something like 10 named winter storms with the latest being Kingston this year – so far. And we’ve had several of the frigid arctic blasts of air that have sent everything into a deep freeze. We’re mostly all ready for this winter to begin winding up. At least we’re heading in the right direction.

Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025-SW Michigan-Not Warming Up Yet

Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025-SW Michigan-Not Warming Up Yet

Currently 16 with an average wind from the S of 2 mph. Feels like 16 degrees. Dew Point 12, Humidity 88%, Barometer 30.41, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:34 am, Sunset 6:19 pm.

Mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of afternoon snow showers. High in the lower 20s. Light winds becoming NW 5-10 mph.

Mostly cloudy with a 50% chance of overnight snow showers. Low near 10. Light winds.

Okay, so looking ahead into next week we’ll  be seeing much better numbers and with March coming along, they get even better. For now, our temperatures are staying in the not so comfortable range. So…a little more snow, a little more cold. Nothing new but it’s getting more than tiresome. This blast of arctic air is coming down from the Arctic Circle and there’s nothing good about it. Not for anyplace in our country having to deal with it now. Our only hope is that it will eventually depart. We just need to have to hang in there long enough to get to the other side. We can do this.

Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025-SW Michigan-Cold Sunshine

Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025-SW Michigan-Cold Sunshine

Currently 9 with an 8 mph wind from the W. Feels like 3 degrees. Dew Point 7, Humidity 84%, Barometer 30.38, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 7:36 am, Sunset 6:17 pm.

Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of snow showers. High near 15. NW winds 5-15 mph with gusts to 20.

Partly cloudy with a low 5-10. NW winds 5-10 becoming light overnight.

Started out the day with some very welcome sunshine. Granted, when I went out to feed the critters it was only 6 degrees, but hey…at least it was bright and cheery looking. Not going to happen overnight but our temperatures are set to rise. Next week looking like it’s bringing us days in the 30 degree range. Not exactly tropical, but so much better and more comfortable then what we’re dealing with right now. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this blast of arctic air is the last one of the season. And keep those fingers crossed with a thought that the month of March will be kinder to us than this month of February has been.

Monday, Feb. 17, 2025-SW Michigan-Brutal Cold Temperatures

Monday, Feb. 17, 2025-SW Michigan-Brutal Cold Temperatures

Partly cloudy with a 50% chance of snow showers. Low zero to 5 above. NW winds 5-10 mph with gusts to 20 in the evening.  Wind Chill Readings as low as 2 below to 12 below zero.

February is almost always a cruel month but this time around it’s being absolutely beastly. One round of winter storms right after another- luckily the heaviest of the precipitation from those have managed to miss my area- but all over the country they’ve brought cold, snow, ice, sleet, wind, flooding…you can imagine any detrimental element of winter and this February has provided it all. And we’re only a little more than half way through it. Our temperatures will slowly begin to warm up after a few days but when I say warm, I’m only talking in the 20s for daytime numbers and in the teens overnight. Bundle up, think spring and survive. That’s the best we can do and hope for right now.

Well, Winter Storm Jett seems to have for the most part missed us. So far. We do seem to be in some sort of a donut hole here where the storms seem to go around us on quite often. We did, as usual, get some snow but nothing like what had been predicted. A few inches up to now. Not to say we won’t be getting more snow, ’cause we’re told to be expecting it. We won’t be so lucky as to avoid the cold temperatures coming at us. Those we will get for sure.  Hardly any way to say how tired I am of winter – the cold, the snow, the misery. Can’t wait for spring to get here and bring an opportunity for getting outside without having to bundle up in boots and coats and gloves and..SO tired of it. And we’re not done with it yet. Alas…

The winter storm moved in a bit later than expected and now will be lasting through Sunday. In addition the possibility of freezing rain and inches of snow, we’ll be getting wind and brutal cold temperatures following it. A messy storm bringing nothing good to anyone. Just be alert and watch out for road conditions if you have to travel.

Winter Storm Jett is going to be here starting tonight, bringing snow, wind and bitter cold temperatures following it. Winter seems to be never-ending this February and it is getting a tad tiresome. At any rate, be prepared for snow this weekend and very cold temperatures to start out next week. I’m always looking forward to spring but this year even more so. Not even looking forward to having to go out and feed the birds and squirrels in the coming days. I will, but not happily. Other than that, I’m hoping not to have to set a foot outside for as long as I can hold off having to do so.

Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025-SW Michigan-Yet Another Winter Storm On The Way

Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025-SW Michigan-Yet Another Winter Storm On The Way

Currently 21 with a 2 mph wind from the SW. Feels like 21 degrees. Dew Point 21, Barometer 29.96, Humidity 100%, Visibility 4 mi. Sunrise 7:43 am, Sunset 6:11 pm.

Mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of snow showers becoming partly cloudy overnight. Low near 10. W winds 5-15 with gusts to 30.

Measured about 3 1/2″ of snow from Winter Storm Iliana in my little backyard. Enough to force me to have to shovel a path and a space for feeding the birds and critters. Not looking forward to the next Winter Storm taking shape. This one will come in probably during the night Friday, through Saturday and perhaps finish by Sunday morning. More snow and more wind followed by bitter cold temperatures. Sounds to me like Winter Storm Jett will be more unpleasant than Iliana. Personally I’m tired of these winter storms one right after another. This has been and evidently will continue to be a most wintry month of February. I  did read that March, April and May could be slightly above normal temperatures and that, if it comes about, will be more than welcome.

Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025-SW Michigan-Another Storm Lined Up

Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025-SW Michigan-Another Storm Lined Up

Winter Weather Advisory in effect until Thursday morning.

100% chance of afternoon snow developing. 2-4″ possible. High in the mid 20s. E winds 5-15 mph with gusts to 25.

100% chance of overnight snow. 2-4″ possible Low 15-20. NE winds 5-15 mph with gusts to 25 becoming N 5-10.

Yup – believe it or not when Winter Storm Iliana has moved on and we find out how much snow that one brought – be it a couple inches or more – we seem to have Winter Storm Jett in line to visit us over the weekend. No guesses yet what that one will bring, but looks again like we might possibly be in the middle of the path. I reck0n we’ll find out eventually. No question about it, this month of February has been an active one – and looks to continue along that same line. In the meantime, if you must be on the road later this evening or first thing tomorrow morning, be prepared and careful. You might be dealing with snow covered travels.

Partly cloudy becoming mostly cloudy with an overnight low near 15. NE winds 5-10 mph.

Winter Storm Watch in effect from Wednesday 1:00 pm through Thursday 7:00 am.  5-7″ of snow possible.

So far we only have a storm watch in effect. It does look as if Winter Storm Iliana will visit us but so far, not exactly how much snow will be left behind.  Thinking somewhere around 5″ is looking likely. I reckon by late Thursday we’ll be finding out. In the meantime, be watchful and prepared for what ever is coming.
