An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019 South West Michigan – Maybe A Peek At The Sun Later

Currently 31 with an average wind from the SW of 14 mph making it feel like 21. Dew Point 26, Humidity 80%, Barometer 30.21, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8;13 am, Sunset 5:19 pm. Cloudy with afternoon peeks at the sun. High in the low to mid 30s. WSW winds 10-20 mph.

Clear overnight skies. Low 31. SW winds 10 – 15 mph.

Not very appealing outside right now, but chances seem to be pretty good that we’ll be seeing a bit of sunshine later on today. Looking forward to it. And a little warm up tomorrow sounds good, too. These days, in Michigan, we rejoice over any little thing we can find in our weather that doesn’t promise misery and woe. So far, so good. Nothing ugly showing up right now until about next Monday where a chance for some freezing rain is trying to work its way into our forecast. Hopefully, that will disappear by then. Fingers crossed.

Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019 South West Michigan – Winterish Weather Returns

Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019 South West Michigan – Winterish Weather Returns

Currently 25 with an ESE wind of 7 mph making it feel like 17 degrees. Dew Point 25, Humidity 100%, Barometer 30.24 & falling, Visibility 1.5 mi., Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:18 pm. 50% chance of snow. High 32. SSW winds 10 – 15 mph.

50% chance of overnight snow. Low 25. WSW winds 10 – 15 mph.

Well, laughing here, I’d give that 50% chance of snow a sure bet rating because it’s been snowing – lightly, but still – every since I got up this morning. Yup, our warm unseasonable temperatures and rain have fled the scene and it’s winter again. We knew it was inevitable but I still don’t care much for it. But hey…it’s January. Only two bad months and it will be March and …here it goes, my annual statement…March could be nice! So I can cope with whatever Mother Nature dumps on us for the now, my thoughts are for the then.

Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019 South West Michigan – Happy New Year

Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019 South West Michigan – Happy New Year

Currently 28 with an average wind from the N of 9 mph making it feel like 19 degrees. Dew Point 24, Humidity 84%, Barometer 30.24 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:17 pm. Cloudy with peeks of sun later on today. High 29. N wind 10 – 15 mph.

Partly cloudy overnight. low 19. Light and variable winds.

Our rain from yesterday, measured .64″ in the gauge this morning, pretty well froze and everything is a tad crunchy this morning. Not going to warm up enough today to make much of a difference either. But at least no new precipitation due today.

I hope your New Year brings the best weather for your area that is possible. Let’s think positive.

Monday, Dec. 31, 2018 South West Michigan – Bring On The New Year!

Monday, Dec. 31, 2018 South West Michigan – Bring On The New Year!

Currently 31 with an average wind from the E of 6 mph making it feel like 25 degrees. Dew Point 28, Humidity 86%, Barometer 29.96 & falling, Visibility 8 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:16 pm. 100% chance of periods of rain. Rainfall near 1/2″ possible. High 36. E winds 10 – 15 mph.

100% chance of evening snow/rain mix. Then overcast the rest of the night. low 29. NNW winds 10 – 15 mph.

Wonder what weather the year 2019 will bring us? More crazy stuff, or more normal? I’m betting on the crazy, myself. I’m not even aware that we know what ‘normal’ weather is supposed to be anymore. Extreme seems to be the word. Whatever comes out way, we’ll weather it – no pun intended…well, maybe a little one…but we’re ready. Mother Nature will do what Mother Nature will do.

In the meantime, be safe and smart if you’re out and about to celebrate the coming of the New Year.

Sunday, Dec. 30, 2018 South West Michigan – The Sun To Put In An Appearance Today

Sunday, Dec. 30, 2018 South West Michigan – The Sun To Put In An Appearance Today

Currently 26 with an average wind from the  SW of 12 mph making it feel like 16 degrees. Dew Point 20, Humidity 77%, Barometer 30.10 & falling, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:15 pm. Mostly cloudy morning becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon. High near 35. SSW winds 10 -20 mph.

Clear to partly cloudy. Low 29. S winds 5 – 10 mph.

Our temperatures continue to stay rather moderate for this time of year in Michigan. Got almost 3/4 of an inch of snow overnight. Looks to be a chance for some freezing rain tomorrow, which just in time for New Year’s is not a good report. Hoping that won’t happen. Then a chance for a bit of snow Tuesday and Wednesday, other than that, nothing spectacular taking aim at us. Except for that opportunity for freezing rain, not bad at all for ending up this year.

Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018 South West Michigan – Mostly Clouds A Few Flurries

Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018 South West Michigan – Mostly Clouds A Few Flurries

Currently 25 with an average wind from the NNW of 4 mph making it feel like 19 degrees. Dew Point 18, Humidity 77%, Barometer 30.32 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:14 pm. Mostly cloudy with a few snow flurries or showers possible. High near 30. W winds 5 – 10 mph.

Cloudy overnight. Low 26. SW winds 10 -15 mph.

Well our burst of weird warm temperatures seems to have gone with the wind to where ever those lovely numbers go to hide. We’re back into the more normal version of winter. It was nice which it lasted though. Rain possible about Monday, and with our unpredictable numbers, that could turn out to be a bad thing if the roads turn icy just in time for New Year’s Eve revelers to be out and about. I’m hoping that doesn’t happen. We’ll have to wait and see.

Friday, Dec. 28, 2018 South West Michigan-Woke to 50 degrees, Light Rain, Wind

Friday, Dec. 28, 2018 South West Michigan-Woke to 50 degrees, Light Rain, Wind

Currently 48 with a SW wind of 15 mph making it feel like 42 degrees. Dew Point 44, Humidity 88%, Barometer 29.66 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:14 pm. Windy! WSW winds 20 -30 mph. High 48 with temperatures falling through the afternoon to 35. 50% chance of afternoon snow.

Cloudy with a 40% chance of snow showers. Low 25. NW winds 10 – 20 mph.

Crazy temperatures this morning. There is no way on earth Michigan should be starting the 28th of December with a 50 degree reading. It’s wonderful – but really bizarre.  Measured .36″ of rain in the gauge this morning. Today will find us falling back into something more seasonal with some snow starting to return. These temperatures won’t be returning anytime soon, that’s for certain. The high tomorrow is looking to be only in the upper 20s, so…off and away this morning to take advantage of nothing but rain on the road. Wind I can cope with. But this small break from winter is to be used to the best advantage we can find. I aim to.

Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018 South West Michigan – Unseasonable Warmth, Rain, Wind

Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018 South West Michigan – Unseasonable Warmth, Rain, Wind

Currently 35 with an ESE wind of 17 mph making it feel like 24 degrees. Dew Point 32, Humidity 91%, Barometer 30.18 & falling, Visibility 5 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:13 pm. 100% chance of rain today. High 43. SE winds 15 – 25 with higher gusts expected.

70% chance of overnight rain. Low 42. S winds 15 -25 mph.

Totally not the norm, this weather in Michigan at the end of December. Warm and rain is not something we usually experience. I have to say, I’m thrilled about it though. I’d rather slog out through my backyard to feed the critters in mud than in ice and snow. And we sure do know this won’t last, so those of us who are not winter fans are relishing every minute of it. You know you can count me in on that bunch :>)

Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018 South West Michigan – Cloudy, Warmer Than Usual

Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018 South West Michigan – Cloudy, Warmer Than Usual

Currently 32 with a SW wind of 2 mph. Feels like 32 degrees, Dew Point 32, Humidity 99%, Barometer 30.47 & rising, Visibility 4 mi., Sunrise 8:12 am, Sunset 5:12 pm. Generally cloudy today with a high of 38. Light and variable winds.

Cloudy skies overnight, low 33. ESE winds 10 -20 mph.

Lots of places dealing with some rough weather, but lucky for us, we are not. Unseasonable warmth here. Could get rain and 40 degrees tomorrow. This really isn’t Michigan end of December weather. I’m perfectly happy with it and just hoping we’re not going to have to be paying for it somewhere down the line.

Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018 South West Michigan – Merry Christmas

Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018 South West Michigan – Merry Christmas

Currently 26 with a SE Wind of 5 mph making it feel like 20 degrees. Dew Point 20, Humidity 77%, Barometer 30.33 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8;12 am, Sunset 5:12 pm. Cloudy with a 40% chance of afternoon snow showers. High 34. Light and variable winds.

Cloudy with a low 31. Light and variable winds.

Still a dusting of snow on the ground and snow showers likely this afternoon. Just enough white to make the White  Christmas people happy. A few snow showers due this afternoon, but nothing heavy coming so far. Another frozen mix coming about Thursday but maybe that will skip town and miss us. Fingers crossed.

In the meantime, have a grand and glorious Merry Christmas.
