An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019-South West Michigan-Snow Just Keeps Coming

Currently 23 with an average wind from the W of 20 mph making it feel like 8 degrees. Dew Point 18, Humidity 81%, Barometer 29.78 & rising, Visibility 0.5 mi., Sunrise 7:42 am, Sunset 6:10 pm. Windy today with snow showers. High 24. W winds 20 – 30 mph with higher gusts possible.

Partly cloudy tonight, low 18. SS Winds 10 – 15 mph.

Getting harder to make myself get out in the morning, wade out and clear a square to scatter the bird seed and peanuts. I have to, I know this, ’cause there sure is nothing for those critters to find to eat beyond what some folks like me are providing. So I do it. But getting to be grudgingly and that’s not nice. I’m just so tired of the wind and the snow and the cold and… Alas…I imagine the critters are even more tired of it. After all, they have to live out in it, which is a miserable thought. We’re all waiting for spring.

Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019-South West Michigan-5″ Of Overnight Snow, More Expected Today And Tonight

Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019-South West Michigan-5″ Of Overnight Snow, More Expected Today And Tonight

Currently 24 with an ENE wind of 14 mph making it feel like 12 degrees. Dew Point 23, Humidity 93%, Barometer 29.61 & falling, Visibility 4 mi., Sunrise 7:43 am, Sunset 6:09 pm. Cloudy with a 100% chance of more snow. 1-3″ expected. Some sleet or freezing rain possible. High 32. E winds 10 -20 mph.

80% chance of overnight snow. 1-3″ expected. Low 121. W winds 15-25.

We did get 5″ of fluffy overnight snow from Winter Storm Maya and evidently lingering chances for more continue to hang around. It’s not bitter cold out there, but it is getting tiresome, seeing only white everywhere. Maybe it would be more acceptable if snow came in colors – maybe blue or green or pink. Plaid would be pretty. I don’t know, I think I’m getting goofy from being home-bound too long. What ever. Getting toward the middle of February and Spring will be just around the corner…granted a snow packed corner, but still…

Monday, Feb. 11, 2019-South West Michigan-Expecting Yet Another Winter Storm

Monday, Feb. 11, 2019-South West Michigan-Expecting Yet Another Winter Storm

Currently 22 with an average wind from the ENE of 11 mph making it feel like 11 degrees. Dew Point 19, Humidity 85%, Barometer 30.27 & rising, Visibility 9 mi, Sunrise 7:45 am, Sunset 6:07 pm. Cloudy today, high 31. E winds 10-20 mph.

Tonight – Winter Weather Advisory in place until Wednesday. Windy. Sleet/freezing rain/100% chance of snow. 3-5″ of snow expected. Low 26. E winds 20 – 30 mph.

Bracing for yet another storm to blow in and make life more miserable that usual. It’s been non-stop. We are paying dearly for the mild November/December. As it stands most would agree it would be a much better plan to even it out and have an equal share of misery every unfortunate month from November right on through than to have it all lumped together in January/February. Not that we have much choice or say in the matter, but if we did…things  would not be as tough as they’ve been lately. At any rate, Winter Storm Maya seems to be barreling toward us, paying a visit starting this evening right on through Wednesday morning. Swell.

Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019-South West Michigan-Clouds, Maybe Snow Showers

Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019-South West Michigan-Clouds, Maybe Snow Showers

Currently 22 with an E wind of 10 mph making it feel like 11 degrees. Dew Point 14, Humidity 71%, Barometer 30.50 & falling, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:46am, Sunset 6:06 pm. Cloudy with a 50% chance of snow showers, high 25. E winds 10 – 15 mph.

Cloudy overnight with a 50% chance of snow showers. Low 20. E winds 10-15 mph.

Nothing much going on so far today. It’s comforting to say that. It’s cold, but then it’s been cold, it seems like, for so long that there’s nothing unusual about that. An ugly rumor that perhaps Tuesday will bring about another ice storm, but we’re all hoping that comes to naught. Too many yards, too many downed trees, remaining from the last one to even think about it happening again. Just one big misery of a winter!

Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019-South West Michigan-Survived Ice Storm, Power Restored

Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019-South West Michigan-Survived Ice Storm, Power Restored

Currently 9 with an average wind from the NNW of 2 mph. Feels like 9 degrees. Dew Point 4, Humidity 79%, Barometer 30.88 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:47 am, Sunset 6:05 pm. Partly cloudy today. High 22. W winds 5 – 10 mph.

Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy overnight, low 11. Light and variable winds.

Well, after pulling through the wicked Polar Vortex, Mother Nature figured we hadn’t suffered enough so she sent along ice storms for us to try to survive. We did. Not without roaring treetop winds of more than 40 mph, power outages, travel restrictions – in other words another prime example of why winter is one miserable season not fit for man nor beast.

Right now the sun is shining. It’s cold, make no mistake, but the sun is actually shining. This in itself seems to be a minor miracle. Lots of people still without power/heat/TV/Internet. Hats off to all the hard working folk who work out in the weather we have to endure to restore our utilities – those precious utilities that we so take for granted until they’re gone. This winter can’t go away fast enough!

Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019-South West Michigan-Weather Is A Mess

Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019-South West Michigan-Weather Is A Mess

Currently 30 with an average wind from the E of 10 mph making it feel like 21. Dew Point 30, Humidity 97%, Barometer 29.93 & falling, Visibility 1.0 mi., Sunrise 7:50 am, Sunset 6:02 pm. 100% chance of morning freezing rain turning to rain, high 42. ESE winds 10 – 20 mph.

60% chance of an evening rain/snow mix changing to overnight snow. Low 17. WSW winds 20-30 mph with gusts to 40.

Got another .20″ of overnight ice/rain. Yesterday measured .52″. The iced rain gauge pretty much sums up trying to measure stuff this week.

This is ridiculous. Last week we dealt with the bitter, brutal cold and the snow. This week it’s ice. Got a solid icing yesterday, the trees, etc., still haven’t de-iced. Today the freezing rain will become rain, which will make everything a bleeping nightmare by tomorrow morning as we’re expecting a flash freeze overnight. Everything should resemble a skating rink by tomorrow’s commute. Just insane weather.

I’ve lived in and around this area for the past 60+ years and I’ve never seen schools closed for a week and more at a time. Last week they were mostly all closed, this week seems to be ditto…and then, yes, this is clearly nuts, the schools had some sort of ‘legitimate’ reason to be closed for a couple of days and then Viola! more weather closing. Now anyone with a working brain would have figured out that due to the horrendous weather conditions, whatever ‘meetings’ or whatever could have been cancelled or postponed, right? No…obviously no working brains involved, so the kids will be going to school this spring/summer long into the month of June to make up for these days. I’m betting they’re going to hate that with a passion. About like most of us are hating this winter’s rugged weather.

Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019-South West Michigan – Overnight Ice

Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019-South West Michigan – Overnight Ice

Currently 30 with an average wind from the NNE of 6 mph making it feel like 24 degrees. Dew Point 29, Humidity 95%, Barometer 29.94, Visibility 4 mi., Sunrise 7:51 am, Sunset 6:00 pm. Cloudy today with a high around 35. NE winds 5 – 10 mph.

70% chance of another night of freezing rain. Areas of patchy fog. Low 28. E winds 5 – 10 mph.

Had .52″ of liquid in the gauge once I melted down the frozen rain. Branches all coated with ice and plenty of power outages (lucky me, this time I wasn’t numbered among them), bad roads to drive on with traffic signals out. Not a pleasant morning. And it looks as if another night of freezing rain is taking aim at us tonight. Not good. As much as I hate the cold and snow, I’ll take that over this ice stuff any day. Oh well…we’re heading toward March and that’s a very good, encouraging thing.

Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2 019-South West Michigan-Expecting Possible Significant Icing Overnight

Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2 019-South West Michigan-Expecting Possible Significant Icing Overnight

Currently 27 with a N wind of 8 mph making it feel like 19 degrees. Dew Point 21, Humidity 77%, Barometer 30.17 & rising, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:52 am, Sunset 5:59 pm. Overcast today. NE wind 5 – 10 mph. High 32.

100% chance of wintry precipitation overnight. 1″ of snow and ice possible. Low 24. E winds 10 – 20 mph.

Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 10pm Tuesday through 1:00pm Wednesday. Freezing rain, sleet & snow expected. Significant icing possible.

Not looking forward to Winter Storm Lucian breezing through. Snow and cold are one thing, ice is quite another. The most dangerous of winter situations. Driving is a dangerous nightmare, chance of power outages…nothing good to look forward to over the next day or so.

Monday, Feb. 4, 2019-South West Michigan-Early Fog, Welcome Warmer Temps

Monday, Feb. 4, 2019-South West Michigan-Early Fog, Welcome Warmer Temps

Currently 46 with an average wind from the S of 12 mph making it feel like 41. Dew Point 44, Humidity 92%, Barometer 29.72 & falling, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 7:54 am, Sunset 5:58 pm. Cloudy today with an 80% chance of light rain, mostly in the afternoon. High 48, SW winds 10 -20 mph.

Cloudy overnight with a low of 21. WNW winds  10 – 20 mph.

Much warmer right now. SO good to walk outside without freezing to death. Lots of the snow cover is packing down and melting – down to about 7″ now. Will be lots lets over the next few days. Can find no fault with this. Dealing with fog is ever so much easier. Lucky this latest winter storm – Kai – is missing us and going way off to the north. Not good for the UP, but for us, we’re only going to get some light rain from it.

Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019-South West Michigan-Super Bowl Sunday

Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019-South West Michigan-Super Bowl Sunday

Currently 43 with an average wind from the W of 12 mph making it feel like 36 degrees. Dew Point 41, Humidity 93%, Barometer 29.85 & falling, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:55 am, Sunset 5:56 pm. Cloudy with periods of drizzle. High 44. SW winds 10 – 15 mph.

Cloudy with off and on drizzle. Areas of fog. Low 39. SSW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Deep, slushy snow all over the parking lots, drives and some sidewalks right now. The rain and the increase in temperature is doing a good job of melting the mountains of snow, but leaving a mess to wade though as it does. The smart people are wearing boots, those not quite so bright are wearing soggy socks and shoes. Oh well…At least we aren’t dealing with that bitter, brutal cold for now. What a week we’ve just gone through!
