So far, here in my little backyard we’re only getting rain this morning. I do notice the temperature is dropping so I suspect that won’t be the case for long. The bad thing about this is everyone is going to be at work because there was no apparent reason not to go in this morning. even knowing what’s coming. The roads aren’t bad for now. And, they will have one miserable time getting back home, I’m betting.  Snow is one thing, pretty much anyone with a working brain who lives in Michigan knows how to get through that…and trust me, even then there are the usual suspects of dimwits who seem unable to make allowances for weather road conditions. But hey…what can you say? There’s among us, like it or not.

Anyway, I do believe that if I owned a company I’d be, hopefully, wise enough to tell my employees to stay home this weekend due to the weather. Or at least send them home before that freezing rain begins to blanket the area.  So, if the weather continues along the path it’s expected to wander down, there will likely be a lot of unhappy people later today. I hope they can stay safe and get back home in one piece.

Looks like this particular weather system is playing havoc all up and down the nation. Even a couple of deaths reported in Louisiana from that end of the storm. Not good. The sooner this one is gone, the better.

Winter Storm Warning In Effect from 1:00am Saturday through 10 am Sunday. Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Total snow & sleet accumulation of up to 3″ and ice accumulations of 1/4 to 3/4″. NE winds will gust as high as 45 mph. Expect power outages and tree damage due to ice. Travel may become impossible.

Overcast – light rain likely – High near 45. SW winds 5 – 10 mph.

100% chance of rain. 1-2″ possible. Localized flooding possible. Low 32. ENE winds 10 -20 mph.

The fact that the first of 13 full moons due in 2020, the first being the Wolf Moon right now, is being eclipsed – putting aside the fact that there really is an eclipse of the moon expected today/tonight –  by the news of the Winter Storm problems to prepare for. The moon eclipse is the first of 4 in 2020. This Winter Storm – who knows how many of these we’re going to have to face.

This being an ice event is the worst in my estimation. A snow storm is one thing, often that can be maneuvered through or around with skill and luck, but heavy icing creates even more dangerous issues. No luck on earth is going to help anyone travel around in something like that. I’m really praying that most people can prepare, hunker down through this and stay put. Might get cold for many of us as no doubt our power will go out. There goes the Internet and our weather blogs, too, but I suspect that will seem minor in the grand scheme of things.

We’ll have to see how this goes but right now, it doesn’t sound all that good.

Okay, remember when I said how fast our weather can change? Well…we now have a Winter Storm Watch in effect from Friday evening through Sunday morning. Looking for the likelihood of heavy mixed precipitation. Rain transitioning to an icy mix then into snow. Snow, sleet and ice may be significant. Wind gusts as high as 45 mph. Very possible power outages and tree damage.

Now, doesn’t that all sound fun?

So, like all sensible folk I’ll be scurrying around tending to errands and whatnot before tomorrow night. May I remind you all how much I hate winter? Have I mentioned that to you before? Of course I have. Perhaps a hundred times, I guess. But this coming storm system is exactly the reason why.

Just see how quickly the weather can change and do whatever it feels like doing. Just yesterday there wasn’t a sign of a below freezing day and night in store for another week. Viola! Last night about a 1/4″ of snow and today our temperature is way below what it’s been lately. Amazing. So, this morning I was able to wake up, look out the window and utter my normal winter greeting to the day, “I hate winter.” Yeah…You know about this time of year I start my usual thinking process…January, February and then comes March. And March could be nice. We’ll see how it goes this year.

Enjoying the clear roads and sidewalks. Except for the dirty little piles of left over snow here and there, there is a decided and welcome lack of it. Won’t last all that long, I suspect, but it’s good for now. The temperature remains comfortable and and if things remain as they seem, it might be longer than a week before we see a day with numbers falling below the freezing mark. Even better news. Things can change rapidly, especially in Michigan, but for now, unless and until the Jet Stream takes another path, all is well weather-wise.

Today is another winner. For all of those who fled to the South to escape our rugged winters have fled in vain so far this year. Not that things will remain like this. I’m sure they won’t but for now there is no way we can complain about a miserable winter in Michigan.  Works for me.

Fairly decent out there so far this morning but the afternoon might not be as pleasant. Still the temperatures are holding steady in the comfortable range for January. No complaints from this Michigan resident.

So far today it’s not a bad day. It might turn messier later on, but for now it’s all dry. I remain amazed at the temperature range of our weather so far this winter. I’m certain sure that this is costing the folks who deal in winter sports supplies are suffering and I do feel bad for that. Much like any vocation where your success – or failure – depends on the weather, there is simply nothing written in stone as to how our weather should perform. We have expectations built on history – and the calendar – but that, as we’ve discovered over the past decade, is so often up for grabs. Is this all due to Climate Change? I don’t really know. Nor do I believe anyone else does. Theories abound but facts are few when compared to centuries of weather activity and changes our weary little planet has had to endure.

But back to our current weather, I have no pony in the race, so this mild weather is more to my taste than what we could be enduring.

Today should stay fairly decent but not saying the same is likely for the next couple of days. Snow and that dread frozen mix are showing up on forecasts. Not good. Daytime temperatures seem to be staying in the 30-40 degree range, which is not usual for a Michigan January. This does seem to be a strange Winter. We had a good dose of it at Halloween. Since then it’s not been Winter as usual. I’m likely it but real Winter fans are not all that thrilled. Should be interesting seeing what the rest of this season brings us.

Today is a fine day for the beginning of Jan. Pleasant temperatures, some sunshine mixed in among the clouds. Definitely a keeper. Peering ahead there looks to be a sprinkling of that dread frozen mix stuff in store. Fingers crossed that changes. That’s the worst. Either snow or don’t snow. Rain or don’t rain. And never, ever mix in sleet or hail. That’s what would be nice but things don’t seem to work that way all the time. So far, so good for the start of our 2020 year. Hoping things stay that way for as long as possible.
