Monday, Jan. 13, 2020-South West Michigan-Every Other Day Snow Predicted

Currently 30 with an average wind from the WSW of 6 mph. Feels like 24 degrees. Dew Point 30, Barometer 30.28 & rising, Humidity 100%, Visibility 4 mi., Sunrise 8:11 am, Sunset 5:29 pm

Mostly cloudy with a 60% chance of morning snow showers. Temperatures holding steady in the low to mid 30s. WSW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Cloudy. Low 28. SE winds 5 -10 mph.

An interesting week coming up. If things hold the way laid out, it will end up snowing every other day. Not deep dips in temperatures and nothing drastic in view. Should be a livable winter week. I appreciate the nothing drastic part. And lucky me, I can rearrange just about anything in my life to stay in and stay put on the snowy days. Good enough.

Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020-South West Michigan-We Dodged The Weather Bullet This Time

Currently 23 with an average wind from the SSW of 2 mph. Feels like 23 degrees. Dew Point 19, Barometer 30.37 & rising, Humidity 83%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:12 am, Sunset 5:28 pm.

Cloudy with 50% chance of snow showers. Low 23. ESE winds 5- 10 mph.

That major ice storm we were destined to get skipped off to the south and we really, truly lucked out. Light icing, light snow, not even the high winds forecast. Mother Nature was either being kind or careless. Either way, we’re more than appreciative. Everyone spent Friday stocking up and getting ready and then…nothing. Not a waste though, ’cause we’re stocked up and ready for the next one and we all know there will be a next one that we probably won’t be so lucky with in the future.

Me? I spent the day that should have been one without power and getting cold as heck in here working in my craft room, sorting, rearranging and getting more stuff ready to donate to Goodwill. It was a terrific surprise day.

Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020-South West Michigan-Storm Still Not Affecting My Area

Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020-South West Michigan-Storm Still Not Affecting My Area

Currently 31 with an average wind from the NNE wind of 19 mph. Feels like 19 degrees. Dew Point 29, Barometer 29.91, Humidity 93%, Visibility 1.5 mi., Sunrise 8:12 am, Sunset 5:27 pm.

Gusty winds and freezing rain this morning then a mix of wintry precipitation in the afternoon. Temperatures holding steady in the mid 30s. NE winds 20 – 30 mph. 100% chance of precipitation.

Windy with a wintry mix of snow and sleet in the evening becoming all snow overnight. 2-5″ expected. Low 14. N winds 20 – 30 mph with higher gusts.

So far, here in my little backyard we’re only getting rain this morning. I do notice the temperature is dropping so I suspect that won’t be the case for long. The bad thing about this is everyone is going to be at work because there was no apparent reason not to go in this morning. even knowing what’s coming. The roads aren’t bad for now. And, they will have one miserable time getting back home, I’m betting.  Snow is one thing, pretty much anyone with a working brain who lives in Michigan knows how to get through that…and trust me, even then there are the usual suspects of dimwits who seem unable to make allowances for weather road conditions. But hey…what can you say? There’s among us, like it or not.

Anyway, I do believe that if I owned a company I’d be, hopefully, wise enough to tell my employees to stay home this weekend due to the weather. Or at least send them home before that freezing rain begins to blanket the area.  So, if the weather continues along the path it’s expected to wander down, there will likely be a lot of unhappy people later today. I hope they can stay safe and get back home in one piece.

Looks like this particular weather system is playing havoc all up and down the nation. Even a couple of deaths reported in Louisiana from that end of the storm. Not good. The sooner this one is gone, the better.

Friday, Jan. 10, 2020-South West Michigan-Winter Storm Warning In Effect-Ice Storm Coming

Friday, Jan. 10, 2020-South West Michigan-Winter Storm Warning In Effect-Ice Storm Coming

Currently 44 with an average wind from the SSW of 7 mph. Feels like 40 degrees. Dew Point 42, Barometer 30.11 & rising, Humidity 91%, Visibility 5 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:26 pm.

Winter Storm Warning In Effect from 1:00am Saturday through 10 am Sunday. Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Total snow & sleet accumulation of up to 3″ and ice accumulations of 1/4 to 3/4″. NE winds will gust as high as 45 mph. Expect power outages and tree damage due to ice. Travel may become impossible.

Overcast – light rain likely – High near 45. SW winds 5 – 10 mph.

100% chance of rain. 1-2″ possible. Localized flooding possible. Low 32. ENE winds 10 -20 mph.

The fact that the first of 13 full moons due in 2020, the first being the Wolf Moon right now, is being eclipsed – putting aside the fact that there really is an eclipse of the moon expected today/tonight –  by the news of the Winter Storm problems to prepare for. The moon eclipse is the first of 4 in 2020. This Winter Storm – who knows how many of these we’re going to have to face.

This being an ice event is the worst in my estimation. A snow storm is one thing, often that can be maneuvered through or around with skill and luck, but heavy icing creates even more dangerous issues. No luck on earth is going to help anyone travel around in something like that. I’m really praying that most people can prepare, hunker down through this and stay put. Might get cold for many of us as no doubt our power will go out. There goes the Internet and our weather blogs, too, but I suspect that will seem minor in the grand scheme of things.

We’ll have to see how this goes but right now, it doesn’t sound all that good.

Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020-South West Michigan-Calm Before The Storm

Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020-South West Michigan-Calm Before The Storm

Temperature 27 with an average wind from the SE of 16 mph. Feels like 15 degrees. Dew Point 15, Barometer 30.25 & falling, Humidity 60%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:24 pm.

Mostly cloudy with a few snow flurries in the morning. There’s a 50% chance of snow showers in the afternoon. High 43. S winds 15 – 25 with gusts over 40 possible.

Cloudy with a 70% chance of rain overnight. Low 41. SSW winds 15 – 25 with highers gusts likely.

Okay, remember when I said how fast our weather can change? Well…we now have a Winter Storm Watch in effect from Friday evening through Sunday morning. Looking for the likelihood of heavy mixed precipitation. Rain transitioning to an icy mix then into snow. Snow, sleet and ice may be significant. Wind gusts as high as 45 mph. Very possible power outages and tree damage.

Now, doesn’t that all sound fun?

So, like all sensible folk I’ll be scurrying around tending to errands and whatnot before tomorrow night. May I remind you all how much I hate winter? Have I mentioned that to you before? Of course I have. Perhaps a hundred times, I guess. But this coming storm system is exactly the reason why.

Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020-South West Michigan-Some Light Snow For Us

Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020-South West Michigan-Some Light Snow For Us

Currently 18 with an average wind from the NW of 13 mph. Feels like 5 degrees. Dew Point 7, Barometer 30.34 & rising, Humidity 60%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:23 pm.

30% chance of scattered morning snow showers becoming a mostly cloudy afternoon. High 22. N?W winds 10 -20 mph.

Partly cloudy evening becoming cloudy after midnight. Low 17. ESE winds 10 20 mph.

Just see how quickly the weather can change and do whatever it feels like doing. Just yesterday there wasn’t a sign of a below freezing day and night in store for another week. Viola! Last night about a 1/4″ of snow and today our temperature is way below what it’s been lately. Amazing. So, this morning I was able to wake up, look out the window and utter my normal winter greeting to the day, “I hate winter.” Yeah…You know about this time of year I start my usual thinking process…January, February and then comes March. And March could be nice. We’ll see how it goes this year.

Tuesday, Jan 7, 2020-South West Michigan-Very Little Snow Hanging Around

Tuesday, Jan 7, 2020-South West Michigan-Very Little Snow Hanging Around

Currently 32 with an average wind from the SW of 8 mph. Feels like 25. Dew Point 27, Barometer 29.93 & falling, Humidity 83%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:22 pm.

30% chance of a few morning snow flurries becoming just overcast in the afternoon. High 36. WSW winds 10 -20 mph,

50% chance of overnight snow showers. Low 18. WNW winds 10 -20 mph.

Enjoying the clear roads and sidewalks. Except for the dirty little piles of left over snow here and there, there is a decided and welcome lack of it. Won’t last all that long, I suspect, but it’s good for now. The temperature remains comfortable and and if things remain as they seem, it might be longer than a week before we see a day with numbers falling below the freezing mark. Even better news. Things can change rapidly, especially in Michigan, but for now, unless and until the Jet Stream takes another path, all is well weather-wise.

Monday, Jan. 6, 2020-South West Michigan-Unusual Weather Continues For Michigan

Monday, Jan. 6, 2020-South West Michigan-Unusual Weather Continues For Michigan

Currently 31 with an average wind from the WSW of 14 mph. Feels like 21 degrees. Dew Point 23, Barometer 30.08 & rising, Humidity 70%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:21 pm.

Sunny today with a high of 37. W winds 15 – 25 mph.

Partly cloudy will increase to overcast during the night hours. Low 29. SW winds 5 – 10 mph.

Today is another winner. For all of those who fled to the South to escape our rugged winters have fled in vain so far this year. Not that things will remain like this. I’m sure they won’t but for now there is no way we can complain about a miserable winter in Michigan.  Works for me.

Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020-South West Michigan-Clouds, Perhaps Afternoon Snow

Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020-South West Michigan-Clouds, Perhaps Afternoon Snow

Currently 31 with an average wind from the S of 14 mph. Feels like 21 degrees. Dew Point 22, Barometer 29.98 & falling, Humidity 68 %, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 8:13 am, Sunset 5:20 pm.

Cloudy with a 70% chance of afternoon snow. Less than 1″ expected. Temperatures steady in the mid 30s. SSW winds 10 -20 mph.

Cloudy with a 40% chance of snow showers. Low 28. W winds 15 – 25 mph.

Fairly decent out there so far this morning but the afternoon might not be as pleasant. Still the temperatures are holding steady in the comfortable range for January. No complaints from this Michigan resident.

Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020-South West Michigan-Going To Be Gloomy Most Of The Day

Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020-South West Michigan-Going To Be Gloomy Most Of The Day

Currently 31 with an average wind from the NW 7 mph. Feels like 25 degrees. Dew Point 27, Barometer 29.94 & rising, Humidity 82%, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 8:14 am, Sunset 5:19 pm

Mostly cloudy with the chance of a few snow flurries or showers showing up. Temperatures will remain steady in the low to mid 30s. NW winds 10 -15mph.

Mostly cloudy tonight. Low 28. W winds 5 – 10 mph.

So far today it’s not a bad day. It might turn messier later on, but for now it’s all dry. I remain amazed at the temperature range of our weather so far this winter. I’m certain sure that this is costing the folks who deal in winter sports supplies are suffering and I do feel bad for that. Much like any vocation where your success – or failure – depends on the weather, there is simply nothing written in stone as to how our weather should perform. We have expectations built on history – and the calendar – but that, as we’ve discovered over the past decade, is so often up for grabs. Is this all due to Climate Change? I don’t really know. Nor do I believe anyone else does. Theories abound but facts are few when compared to centuries of weather activity and changes our weary little planet has had to endure.

But back to our current weather, I have no pony in the race, so this mild weather is more to my taste than what we could be enduring.
