An unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the weather, an observer of world-wide weather events, and an addicted fan of the Weather Channel on TV. Some occurrences from our not too distant past have left me horrified to this day- such as the possibly avoidable tragedy of the damage and death trailing behind Katrina, where human error combined with Mother Nature for sheer terror, the unspeakable destructive Tsunamis in Japan and Thailand, scenes and sounds of which I can hardly bear to see or hear. But I do see and hear it all because I am enthralled, fascinated, by weather driven happenings every bit as much as I am captivated by the clouds in our ever-changing sky. No impressive credentials, no list of meaningful letters trailing after my name, this is merely me, just another weather junky having my say about it all.

Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024-SW Michigan-Hot And Humid Today

Currently 79 with an average wind from the WSW of 2 mph. Feels like 79 degrees. Dew Point 70, Barometer 29.98, Humidity 77%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 7:02 am, Sunset 8:24 pm.

Mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms. High in the lower 90s with a heat index 101-106. SW winds 5-10 mph becoming W 5-15 in the afternoon.

Mostly cloudy with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Low around 70. W winds 5-10 mph.

There is a Heat Index Advisory and there is also a slight risk for severe weather to develop. Today is going to be stifling and as bad as it is, we can at least take heart that after today, it will begin to be more comfortable. Still some 80 degrees with a small chance for some showers on Wednesday and maybe Friday, but much better than what we’re experiencing today. Try to stay cool any way possible, hydrate and just be careful. In heat like this, it’s easy to find yourself in trouble quite easily.

And as a personal aside…this is exactly why it’s foolish and dangerous to have schools start before Labor Day. How it ever got going and allowed, is beyond comprehension.  Schools should start after Labor Day and end with Memorial Day. End of story. Now do something about it.

Going to stay warm for the beginning of this week.  Mostly today and especially tomorrow. There is a decided chance for severe weather tomorrow to go along with the heat, so just be aware and pay attention. Things will improve considerably by week’s end.

Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024-SW Michigan-Heat Up Starts Tomorrow

Currently 70 with a calm wind from the N. Feels like 70 degrees. Dew Point 59, Barometer 30.24, Humidity 68%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:59 am, Sunset 8:29 pm.

Mostly sunny with a high in the mid 80s. Light winds becoming W 5-10 mph in the afternoon.

That high pressure system is becoming firmly in place bringing the heat from the south into our arena. I’ve been saying we could see several 90 degree days, and I’m still saying that, plus. I’m thinking well into the 90s for at least one of those days. Some relief could probably be ours by next weekend, but make no mistake, this is going to be one hot week we have to get through. We can do it. Just remember the south and west that’s been going through months of this and even hotter. We are fortunate to only get small bouts of this. If nothing else, it will make the though of fall to come more welcome even for those who enjoy the summer climate.

Friday, Aug. 23, 2024-SE Michigan-Heat Begins Tomorrow

Friday, Aug. 23, 2024-SE Michigan-Heat Begins Tomorrow

Currently 64 with a 3 mph wind from the SSE. Feels like 64 degrees.  Dew Point 60, Barometer 30.28, Humidity 84%, Visibility 10 mi. Sunrise 6:58 am, Sunset 8:31 pm.

Partly cloudy with a high in the upper 70s. SW winds around 10 mph with gusts to 20.

Partly cloudy overnight with a low in the upper 50. Light winds.

Still comfortable today but starting tomorrow the high pressure ridge nudging it’s way north and east will bring us much higher temperatures. We could possibly see  90 degrees several time in this little march of hot days. By the end of next week, perhaps Friday of next week we’ll be in more comfortable weather. Stay cool and hang in there. There’s light at the end of the tunnel we’re about to head in to.

Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024-SW Michigan-Heat Wave On The Way

Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024-SW Michigan-Heat Wave On The Way

Currently 63 with a calm wind from the N. Feels like 63 degrees. Dew Point 54, Barometer  30.32, Humidity 30.32, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:50 am, Sunset 8:32 pm.

Sunny with a high in the mid 70s. Light winds becoming W 5-10 mph in the afternoon.

Partly cloudy with a low in the lower 50s. Light wins becoming S around 5 mph overnight.

Doesn’t feel like it right now, but by Sunday we’ll be returning to the sweltering weather. And, as hot as it’s going to get –  we could see a day or two of 90 degrees – it won’t last all that long. By the end of next week we’ll be right back to this 70 degree range weather. Just have to hang in there for 4 or 5 days, stay cool and wait it out. It will get better – and cooler.

Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024-SW Michigan-Couple More Comfortable Days

Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024-SW Michigan-Couple More Comfortable Days

Currently 64 with an average wind of 5 mph from the N. Feels like 64 degrees. Dew Point 64, Barometer 30.33, Humidity 47%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:55 am, Sunset 8:34 pm.

Sunny. High in the mid 70s. Light winds.

Mostly clear with patchy overnight fog.  Low in the upper 40. Light winds.

Comfortable temperatures for the next few days but the warmth returns early next week. Even that won’t last all that long – a handful of hot days and then some 70 degrees return. Just know the high pressure system bringing the high 80s will stick around beginning Monday. Sunday could be warm but not as much as the days following. Our August yoyo temperatures continue. Oh well, at least it gives us variety.

Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024-SW Michigan-Chilly Week Continues

Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024-SW Michigan-Chilly Week Continues

Currently 61 with an average wind from the NE of 7 mph. Feels like 61 degrees. Dew Point 51, Barometer 30.27, Humidity 70%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:54 am, Sunset 8:35 pm.

Sunny with a high in the lower 70s. NE winds 5-10 mph.

Clear tonight with a low in the upper 40s. Light winds.

Well, it was a toss-up this morning whether to turn on the heat or find a heavy sweater. The sweater won, but no bet on tonight. A temperature in the 50s was bad enough, tonight might hit in the 40s. You can almost count on my heat being on. Not much I hate more than being cold – and this morning  was just plain cold.

This cold front will hang around for a few more days but hopefully by Friday we should be on our way back up. Next week could be a warm one – quite the contrast to this week.

Monday, Aug. 19-SW Michigan-Wonderful Week Ahead

Monday, Aug. 19-SW Michigan-Wonderful Week Ahead

Currently 66 with an average wind of 12 mph from the NNE. Feels like 66 degrees. Dew Point 54, Barometer 30.11, Humidity 68%, Visibility 10 mi., Sunrise 6:53 am, Sunset 8:37 pm

Mostly sunny with a high in the mid 70s. N winds 5-15 mph with gusts to 25.

Mostly clear overnight with a low around 50. N winds 5-10 with gusts to around 20 in the evening becoming light.

This is one of the best weeks coming for us. Hardly anyone will be able to complain about it. Sunny and mild. Comfortable temperatures – well, at least until next weekend. Do get out and about, enjoy this because things will heat up by next weekend. We could conceivably see a 90 degree day stuck in there. At least upper 80s. So…this is the time to get that A/C shut off and the windows open.

Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024-SW Michigan-Terrific Week Ahead For Us

Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024-SW Michigan-Terrific Week Ahead For Us

Currently 70 with an 8 mph wind from the WNW. Feels like 70 degrees. Dew Point 65, Barometer 29.84, Humidity 90%, Visibility 9 mi., Sunrise 6:52 am, Sunset 8:39 pm.

Mostly clear tonight with a low in the mid 50s. N winds 5-15 mph with gusts to 25.

Just have to get through today with the chance of rain and we’re looking at one terrific week ahead. 70 degrees with plenty of sunshine. Doesn’t get much better than that.  Hard to tell how accurate it will be by next weekend but it does look as if next weekend will be quite a bit warmer than this one. So, enjoy the comfort while it’s here.
